Stupid center dash console questions

I would like to know the intent for the circled little slot behind the shifter. What do you use it for?

Also does anyone even use the 2 slots underneath the display/ac? They seem completely useless under acceleration or climbing as anything in there would slide out. Do you find them useful for anything at all? :shrug:

Top opening: garage door opener (does slide out on occasion)

You could always line them with some anti slip material. I only use the bottom one for my sunglasses.

Bottom slot holds my Ipod that is wrapped in a small black rubber anti slip mat about 5"X5" and held with a velcro strip. I am a firm believer in "out of sight, out of mind" and wrapping something in black and putting it in a black slot makes it invisible from the outside. You can see where I plug into the USB but it looks like the cable goes to nowhere.

Yep, I've lined these 3 locations with some black non-slip drawer liner similar to: Duck Non-adhesive Solid Grip Shelf Liner, Black - Walmart.com. Works great, doesn't slide out, and stops any rattling noises from keys, etc. I ended up doing the two rear wheel storage trays in the cargo area too, kept everything from sliding around.

Trimming to fit can be a PITA the first time; however, once you get it to fit correctly, you'll have a perfect template if you ever need to replace a piece.

the one by shifter is housing my bluetooth headset (I hate using in car audio for that).
Top one is useless.. I think of putting some switches in there, bottom one - glasses.

Have you considered moving the usb/aux in into the glove box? Sounds like you keep your iPod plugged in, so this would certainly make it "out of sight, out of mind". Took me no time at all, required no cutting/splicing/etc. Just pop off a few panels and you'll wonder why Toyota even moved the USB to the center stack to begin with...

I'm getting ready to mount a CB in that biggest opening. I'll have to cut it to make it work. But my CB has a forward facing speaker so it should work perfectly.

I use the top opening for my sunglasses. They're in a soft shell case and it jams in there nicely. I have tissues in the bottom...I hate having to open up the center console all the time. Change in the small compartment.

I feel like the 4runner was built for me with those slots working perfectly for my junk.

* slot behind shifter...fits my condo's garage door opener to the cm
* upper slot fits a pack of 5 gum perfectly & can of chew on top of it.
* Lower slot fits wallet

I have a decent size foldable knife with a seat belt cutter and glass breaker. I attached some Velcro to the handle and mounted it to the top of the bottom slot. It's secure and hidden.

The storage is way worthless though. The 4th gen had wayyyyy better options. What I wouldn't do for that little cubby where those worthless holes are and secret glove box compartment. Or deep door well storage. Or the little close able flap on the shifter console. Or a closed compartment for wall storage in the truck where the JBL option subwoofer goes. The list goes on and on.

I put my phone in the garage door slot, then floor it and see if it slides into the cupholder. Its a fun way to pass time on those long road trips.

I have always wondered what Toyota intended that slot in front of the shifter to be used for. My FJ had a similar one. They are really not deep enough to be of any use.

Yeah, I find slots in the dash to be worthless (not just on the 4Runner, but on cars in general). I don't like leaving ANYTHING exposed for thieves to see and get tempted to break a window. I have used the slot in front of the shifter for toll change on trips where I knew there were going to be tolls. But I removed it once I got where I was going.

Agree on storage in the back. They could have utilized space and created some storage options back there, IMO.
