sorry...I just looked at the pic of your trim ring again and noticed you actually used two rings to create the counter sinking of the sub...really nice work! Clean install so far!!

I was hoping to be done with this by tonight, but it rained Monday and last night, so I couldn't do anything with it. I was hoping to do something with it tonight, but again things came up. Maybe I'll get somewhere with this tomorrow....

The MDF soaks up liquids like a sponge so the bond between it and the FG should be strong. But a few screws shouldn't hurt either. I'm going to trim the excess off of the box before the next layers so I can get a good bond around the edges too.

Got the excess FG trimmed/sanded off yesterday. Then I drilled some counter sink holes so I could use some screws for a little added hold between the top panel and the rest of the box. I'll add about 3 more layers after this.

I've been looking into gettin some speakers and an amp but no sub. I like your idea of puttin the amp in the panel.
Now that you've had it there for a few weeks, have you had any problems?
I don't know much about amps and how they operate, but what do you need to worry about when you select a location to mount, besides trying to not get it stolen.

I try to mount my amps out of site. You want it somewhere that the wires aren't going to get pulled/stepped on. Under seats is sometimes good but with many cars the heater vents are there. You can still mount an amp there if it's small enough, you just have to stand it off the vent. If you don't mind holes in the back of your back seats and don't fold the rear seats flat for haulin stuff, you can mount it right there. To me, inside the panel is the best. If the amp fits I can't think of a better location. The only thing I didn't like about mounting it there was that I had to cut a factory panel to make it fit.
I've finished the last of the fiber glass. I need to trim/sand it again and cut out the hole for the sub. I need to get some terminals for the wiring and then carpet it and work out the install brackets. Weekends have been busy with open houses and visiting family, but tomorrow is my day in the garage so hopefully I'll get something done.

About 2 weeks ago I added a few more layers of FG, rapping the FG around the edges. Today I sanded down the excess and finally trimmed out the sub hole. I had gone a little overboard glassing around the hole, so I had to spend a lot of time with the dremmel to trim the FG back to the MDF ring. I picked up a speaker terminal from Radio Shack and cut a hole in the back of the box to fit it. After marking and drilling my pilot holes, I wired everything up and mounted the woofer. I hooked it up in the 4Runner and played with my EQ for a while. Checked for leaks (none), and planned out how I'm going to mount it.
It sounds great, now I have to upgrade the rest of my speakers. I still need to carpet the box and figure out how I'm going to make a grill for it. So far I'd say I wish I had just bought the JL Stealth enclosure. Would have been a lot less work. I saved a lot of money doing myself, but thats not including my time. Time is money, so in actuality I spent twice as much. There is something to be said for the feeling of saying "I built that", but if I could go back and do it again, I'd buy the JL!

It's still held in place with a tie down strap. I haven't been able to find carpet that matches and really haven't been motivated to go look for it. We're in the process of moving so after we get settled in the new house I'll get the carpet and finish it up.
It sounds good though! A little overpowering but thats what the Sub level control on the head unit is for.

that fuse thats closest to the amp is A BAD IDEA...one fuse is enough on one power line...and all that is going to do is give you a voltage drop...i would take it out of line, and get some form of solid power wire connection (no crimps pleaaaseee)
You may hear a difference, sine the amp will be getting more voltage (more power, more volume), but you will deff be more efficient

Custom box for 06 r4runner
Just as an FYI, I am getting a custom sub box made for my 06 4runner and will post pics in case anyone is interested. I advised my local shop who is doing the work to keep the molds so that he can make more easily to sell later on.
It will be molded into the right side storage area that runs over the tire well. The double decker system will still work and the power outlet in the rear will still be accessable.

You can get carpet that matches perfectly at one of the local chain car parts stores. I forget where I got mine from, but I think it was Autozone. See my Kicker install in my sig for the color match. It was in a roll, very cheap too. It's not stretchy, but if you have the skilz, you can make it look stock.

Sorry it's been so long with no update. I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in June and have been in and out of hospitals since. They finally found a treatment that is working for me so I'm feeling better now.
I got the box covered and then about 2 months later traded in the 4Runner for an Infiniti G35. I loved the 4Runner but we have a Sequoia aswell and I didn't feel the need to keep 2 SUV's. The carpet matched pretty well. I still have the box if anyone is interested in it, PM me.
Anyways, without further adu, here's the pics of it finished.
