Sub question for the '03

When it comes to car stereo stuff I am completely in the dark. I know some people have said they didn't like the JBL 10 speaker system, but I am happy with mine. I just wanted to ad a little punch to it with a simple sub. For you stereo guys, don't laugh, but i was thinking about getting a powered Bazooka base tube. I was thinking about this mainly because it is all inclosed and, if need be, it can easily be removed. That is the main thing, that if I need to put something in the back I need to be able to take it out whether it I get a Bazooka Tube or something else. I had just thought since I don't really need to be heard a mile away, and the amp is included, it would be the cheapest and easiest thing to do.

If any of you have any suggestions for a good cheap solution that might work better, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a clue about your question, because I'm pretty stereo stupid also. But, I'm interested to know more about that front skid plate your 4Runner has in your picture.

What can you tell me about it?

I got 2 -12" subwoofers in a smaller box installed in the back
cargo area. I only have a 250 watt amp so i just "adds a little
punch". I also love the 10spk JBL. I will try to post photos
tomorrow or If I ever come to bham you can see it.:xnuts:

Cool. I just want a little more range but didn't want to spend a bunch. Where'd you mount your amp? If I could mount the amp on the back of the sub box, that might work but the thing I like about the Bazooka tube is that the amp and the sub is all in one piece.:banana: :banana:

There are many products on the market today. However, as for simple solutions, here are my favorite two subwoofer options:

KENWOOD came out with a small subwoofer. Here is the link:

It is a 5.25" passive radiator SELF-POWERED small/thin subwoofer. It is self-powered...thus, you don't need to buy a separate amplifier to power it nor find a place to install the amp. Remember, you can also place this subwoofer under your font seat (if you have space). And if you could, then you don't need a monstrous subwoofer to get good bass because the bass will be right under you...and you get a more unified sound. You probably can get one for around $150-200 if you do an internet search. BTW, this Kenwood sub has gotten pretty good review.

Another option that i like is the Infinity Basslink. This is also a self-powered passive radiator subwoofer, except that it is much bigger (10") and more powerful (200W). Again, this will only fit in the cargo area. It has gotten great reviews from owners! Here is the link:

I have 3 bazookas sitting in my basement right now, 1 10 and 2 8's. I liked them because if set up properly, they could easily be removed and you wouldn't have to worry about shorting something out and catching your car on fire. They provide plenty of punch. They may not be the cleanest sounding subs, but they are more than sufficient. If you are worried about overall sound quality, the stock stereo would have to go. I haven't put them in my new 4Runner because I just had a son a few months ago and travelling requires the entire cargo area (tub, pack n' play, booster chair, suitcases, etc.)

I am waiting for JL or even Q' Logic to make some enclosure that would incorporate the position of the old sub and amp. Then just add a small Class D amp somewhere and you would have a nice sounding system and a functional cargo area.

I mounted the amp on the back of the rear seat, so if I need to
remove the subs, I can just unplug the speaker wire from the
subwoofer box and move it. If you mount it on the sub-box you
would have to undo to many wires to remove the subs and also
you would have a live power wire hanging aroung too.:duh:

I will try and post pic tomorrow so you can see what I am talking
about. I will also post pics of my XM radio.

momo, I installed the Inifinity basslink-x in my cargo area and its great. You're not going to get the thundering bass that can be heard around the street, but you'll get nice, clean tight bass. It definitely exceeded my expectations. It was kind of bigger than I thought it would be though. You can buy a better sounding sub and amp for the $200 that it cost, but if you are looking for more space in your cargo, then this is what you should get.

Hear, hear. I had one in my '93 Bronco, mounted to the ceiling in the back, with a remote control wired in the dash. The sound was absolutely wonderful.

{sniff} I sometimes miss that old beast...

I'm still doing ok with the JBL system, but what I miss most is the MP3 player, changer notwithstanding.
