Successful 5th Gen Key fob swap!

I too, thought it was the battery and tried many different things to put more pressure on the battery in the case. The eBay seller I talked to said it has nothing to do with the battery, other than reseating the battery resets whatever the problem is (if that makes any sense). I tried to find his eMail but I must have deleted it. He said it had something to do about them losing the codes or rolling codes. It can happen once in a while or regularly. My new one he sent went 3 months without having to reseat the battery.

If they don't work, contact the seller and return them for a refund ASAP.

They do accept returns even if the keys are cut (think about it, they know the keys are going to be cut because who would buy a key and then not cut it? So a policy where they only accept returns on uncut keys would basically be meaningless.)

Didn't realize how long ago I bought them, bought them at the beginning of Sept, I'm screwed. Gonna program them and see what I can do about the battery life.

Well it's been 2 weeks since I installed the new batteries and spacer in my remote keyfobs (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-g...sful-5th-gen-key-fob-swap-13.html#post1501695), and both are still working just fine. You guys who are having problems should seriously consider trying this 20 minute fix before going through the hassle of shipping them back.

The problem with that is that when these fail, they fail without warning. Besides that, I would never really 'trust' it, even if it did keep working.

Which means that the only way to avoid problems is to carry the old, separate key fob with you so that when the new one craps out, you still have a working fob. And since "carrying too much crap around" is exactly the problem that this key fob is supposed to cure, it's just not worth it. It's less hassle just to carry and use the old fob.

I'm sure the real problem is spotty quality control (these are, after all, cheap copies of the Toyota product, I presume made in China.) Some of them work great and will probably last for years. Some of them are just crap. I got a crap one, so I'm going to chalk it up to lessons learned and move on.

So what I'm getting is that people here are having difficulty with the remote/keyless entry part of this all-in-one key right?

Then no problem. I've done this and had my all-in-one key for about a week now, no problems. I know, I know, everyone starts having problems around two weeks. Well didn't GixxerSteve propose a fix that works just fine? He seems to think so. Anyway, mine had the great fortune of having only one out of three clips broken off (hurrah!) so no big deal.

The real part where there's no problem, aside from the very simple fix (again thanks GixxerSteve, I'm sure I'll need that soon enough), is that the key fob and the transponder chip are two completely separate pieces. Here's how I know:
I got a key from extra-partssssssss (ssssssss etc.). Those kind of suck. Buyer indeed beware. Here's the catch: the electronic bits in it are just fine, it's just the material that sucks. I got that key, and after much running around (met a nice guy in parts dept at the stealership who gave me a fresh-cut-from-VIN non-transponder key, then went to home depot [not recommended, read on for why] to have it cut), I found that the key got cut slightly off-center, and on top of that it was a surreptitious matter since Home Depot will only cut keys that they sell to you. I suspect less that it's the Home Depot employee who did it and more that extra partssssssssssssssssssss gives you lame keys. The plastic cover on the keyfob didn't fit either; it wasn't closing fully and the keychain hole or whatever it's called was all jacked up from somebody opening it too many times with a machine gun or something.

SO, I got a new key shell from the recommended link in post #1 of this thread. Came really quick, since the guy's in um.. Texas or something, instead of China. I swapped out the internals and snapped it in to place and the remote worked flawlessly. The key, however, seemed suddenly unprogrammed. I was very confused. Tried reprogramming it and the security light did a samba blink pattern of blink pause blink blink pause pause (assuming each word is an equally measured beat). This is apparently the code for THIS KEY DOESN'T HAVE A TRANSPONDER, RETARD, as I later looked at the extra-partsss(yougettheidea) key and found a little pinky-nail-sized looking piece of plastic on the side, jammed into the corner of the key's plastic area. This was the transponder.
So I broke the old shell (the key was junk anyway, so I figured why not), and put the transponder in the new shell (had to hammer it in, made me nervous I'd break it), and got it cut via legit-locksmith-guy-in-middle-of-ghettoville (for free! nice guy.) and it worked just fine. And it still works just fine.

So what's my point? Maybe at some point your remote will stop working, but I haven't heard any complaints about the non-battery-powered transponder, or the mechanical/physical key itself, so failing remote entry, you can still physically get in the car and the immobilizer will still recognize your transponder. (I hear the alarm stops going off when you turn the key to Run, and you can disable it? by going back and forth between off and Run 5 times.) No big deal after all, right? :jump:

Yes that's true. You can still get in door, you can still turn the ignition and the vehicle will start up because the transponder still works. It's the RKE portion alone that fails.

But that still makes the thing pretty much worthless to me. I have a vehicle with RKE, I want to be able to USE the RKE.

I don't want to have to open my door with a key like some low-class, non-RKE-having peasant. :crybaby:

Seriously, yes, you could say the key still "works" but the whole point of the changeover was to have the RKE in the same key as the ignition. If the RKE doesn't work, you could just as easily save your $30 and carry around just a key and have the same functionality.

Well, my RKE randomly failed as many have reported, fortunately on the way out of the house, so I was able to go back inside and reseat the battery.

The weirdest thing happened though: I still have two clips out of three (the luxury package, only one clip missing), and the battery seemed fine, so I pressed down on it, hard, and the remote still wouldn't work, but when I removed it and put it back in, it worked fine. Odd. It's still possible the contacts were not contacting, but very strange indeed.

I tried putting in some stick-on foam on the back of the battery cover like someone earlier suggested, so we'll see how that goes.

I know the toyota parts guy I talked to about this COULD know his stuff, but he could also be BSing majorly when he says the OEM sienna/camry key is a different frequency and therefore digitally incompatible with our 4runners. I wonder if anyone with way too much money (or perhaps just a spare sienna/camry all-in-one key) wants to try programming this sometime? It's only $291 from toyota direct.. haha.

So is it the chip that allows you start it that is the problem? As long as i remember to i want to try this on the 3rd gen as my remote broke, but mine doenst have the immobilizer crap or whatever toyota calls it, so from the sounds of it is not going to be a problem? Martinjmpr Btw hows that mazda ranger working out for ya?

NOOO it's the inverse. I hope you haven't spent on it yet. The immobilizer/transponder chip works fine. The remote entry is the problem.

I haven't figured it out yet, although I have reason to believe at this point that maybe it's just using/wasting a lot of battery energy somewhere because I gave it a new battery, and reseating the battery worked fine for a minute, but then it died again and when i put it back in this time it seemed like the battery was very dead. I'm going to stick the other battery I have in there (a fresh one) and see how long it takes, and maybe see if it's arbitrarily pushing buttons or shorting somewhere.. I'm not about to give up on this just yet.

Loving it. Finally put a stereo in it last week, much more pleasant commutes now! Still have a bit of work to do to get it to be fully functional but it's nice having a truck again.

Is it me or does the key remote eat through batteries? I've gone through the original battery, used battery from my old remote, and another new battery so far. Used it since end of august.

<edit>
Ok i see that a bunch of other people are having the same issue... i sent the seller a message (he's selling the key again) about the issue.

It's not the battery.. It's something to do with the code or rolling code. At least that's what the eBay seller told me. I know on my old remote that was really bad I could use the same battery over and over, it just needed to be reseated. The new one I got (knock on wood) has only needed to have the battery reseated once since the spring sometime.

Mine has a battery issue. Battery was dead. Replaced battery and now a week later the battery is dead again. Bush buttons and the red light doesn't come on.

Guys I hate to bring this up again, but need some help, just can't find it anywhere else.

Just bought a used 2010 Camry LE ...came with the usual all-in-one keyless entry key, but only one. (no alarm) It starts the car fine, but the lock/unlock buttons don't work. After a lot of internet searching Camry specific, I can tell -most- of those users/forums don't have near the technical expertise of this 4runner group. :hail: And that's putting it nicely, you should see some of the non-educated answers elsewhere, LOL.

On my 3rd 4runner now, and done many a key swap/program/etc myself successfully using the open/close door methods.

But on this 2010 Camry, I keep running across posts that sez -ONLY- dealer or locksmith with the proper electronic programming tools can do this, can't do it ourselves with the usual door open/close/etc routines. I would love confirmation on that exactly if anyone can comment on this? Will the open/close door routines work on this model? So far I can't enter the programming mode doing this.

Update: in all fairness, have to add this, maybe it will help someone. Non-Toy dealer where I bought this car tested this key on a tester before we left and insisted the battery was good, just needed re-prog. On a whim I just changed the battery and voila it works! Note to self.. Change the battery on a used or suspect remote! I have another fleabay key on the way, so orig ques above still stands.

i replaced my battery with a new one and added a spacer to keep the battery tight. It lasted a month before the battery died but there was some weird stuff at the hotel i was at and killed phone batteries and shit when the power went out. Could be coincidence but im going to try it and see how long this battery lasts.

I love this forum!! Just saved my self over 100$ in labor to have my key and fob programmed. Love not giving the dealer my money.

well the battery crapped out 4 days after i put a new one in. I smashed the fkn key into pieces and threw it away in different trash cans throughout the city.

Awesome idea, shitty execution by the key company
