Successful Key Swap: 5th Gen & Flip Key

I saw this thread and got excited.
Successful 5th Gen Key fob swap!

BUT!!
Before posting on that thread, here's a summary:

The OP got lucky and didn't have any troubles with programming it. Later, as more people bought these from the ebay member extra-partss (Notice the extra "s"), they started experiencing short battery life with the fob portion. I looked into trying to find a different ebay member to buy this from and avoid that other guy.

I found this guy selling them: Key from Wholesale-24-7
I first purchased some keys for a Camry since they have the same code as the 5th Gen 4Runners, but have a 4th button for the back window. I was thinking the Camry ones would be on par with Toyota OEM fobs and the battery wouldn't be an issue, but they didn't work because the codes are different. Returned them with no problem for the correct ones.

I programmed the fob when I got it without any issues. Since people were mentioning that the battery would die about two weeks after replacing it, I'd test all the buttons everyday after I got home from work. I bought the all-in-one key about mid-August. Here we are in October and I still have no issue with the fob.

Now I took this swap a step further. I purchased a flip key too from globalkeyservice.

The flip key has a plastic cradle inside to hold the fob inside the flip key case. I had to take the fob out of its case within the key to make it fit inside the cradle. I had a Chip for the Key left over from my last flip key and glued it at the top near the flip key.

I used some thin foam to help keep the fob and case buttons engaged. You can also see the fob case portions that didn't fit in the flip case.

I did not programmed the chip key from the all-in-one key because I used a chip that was already programmed using these steps.

As for the key and flip case here's what I think:

The all-in-one key is sturdy and OEM quality. I would have stopped there and gotten it cut, but I wanted a flip key again.

The flip key has a plastic shell. The spring used to open the key causes the plastic to flex a little and create a small gap between the key and plastic shell. Nothing major and doesn't affect to key opening, but not a "perfect product". I had an inclination that the shell would be plastic as most of the others selling these on ebay were coming from China/Taiwan.

I'll keep this updated as I continue to use this key.

you mentioned you had to get the correct ones? what was the part number? also the link for the flip key that is the one you purchased correct?

The FCCID from your original fob needs to match the FCCID on the new key/fob. Mine is HYQ12BBX but the Camry and 5th Gens use HYQ12BBY.

so the flip key should work on the 5th gen keys?

Maybe I'm missing something, but if the FCCID for your original key is different than the flip one, how did you get this to work?

looks a though he just swapped out the guts from the key that has the same FCCID.

You got it! I bought a key with the same FCCID that match my original fob, and then took the internals out and put it in the shell of this flip key.

If you have a 5th Gen with a key with only three buttons, search ebay for a flip key with only three buttons.

does the key open perfect? like when you hit the button it flips right away or do you have to help it?

No problem with the key opening prior to opening the shell. After I opened up the shell, it took me awhile to get the spring pressure set back to where it was, but it springs out without an issue.

Here's an update:
The Fob is still working 100%! No dead battery issues with this one. I did switch back to the All-in-One key and am not using the flip key. Nothing was wrong with the flip key - if you want it, I'll sell it to you. The key hasn't been cut yet.

My reasoning is that I couldn't feel where the buttons were if I wanted to lock/unlock the car while the key was still in my pocket. The OEM fob and this All-in-One key has recessed buttons and a dot on one of them to help with that. I like that if my hands are full, I can find the button by touch while they're still in my pocket.

I did this a few months ago. these are the keys I used. programmed just fine, quality is ok so far no problems with batteries. this seller is not selling them anymore but maybe still available somewhere else.

I'm sorry to hear that! Did you buy it from "Wholesale-24-7" or "Extra_partss"? These keys seem to be "hit-or-miss".

My fob is still working on the original battery. Buy at your own risk...
