Summer Family Outbound Overland Trip - Green Ridge State Forest

I would be coming with my wife, 3yo son and 5yo daughter. And every camping luxury known to man to make the outdoors bearable for my wife, lol.

Plan is to meet Friday evening at Group Site 1 (reservation pending) for some family camping. If you can't join Friday night, plan to meet at the site by 10am on Saturday morning, July 29.

The group will have an overland adventure on back country roads and to some scenic overlooks departing the site about 10am. We'll try to throw in a water crossing or two. We will drive for no more than 4 hours to keep the littles from declaring mutiny from the backseat. Plan for a mid-day picnic lunch stop. Trail details to be announced later. [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] will surely not disappoint.

After adult overlanding, we'll go back to the camp site for some kid-friendly activities. We're thinking tie-die. Mrs. Overland will provide rubber bands, buckets, and die. Bring your own tie-die item (adults too!).

Break camp and head home Sunday or stick around for some group hiking.

We're asking each family to contribute some firewood.

Thanks for the invite. We're still sorting out who will be where and when for the summer. Hopefully we'll be free. Count us as tentative.

I've got 14 and 12 year old boys and a 4 year old girl. Oldest is probably out - not a fan of camping. 12 yr old loves camping. 4 year old is down for any adventure.
 
Still working on it. Camping is out for sure, trying to work it into a day-trip.

9 y.o. not sure about being in a car for so long with no bathroom access.

I have to teach these girls how to rough-it a little bit, lol.
 
Heading to GRSF this weekend with the kids and dogs. Planning to scope out some campsites, hiking trails and begin planning our overland drive for the summer trip. [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION]
 
Group Site G1 is booked.

Saturdays 4hr drive will be broken up so even the most vehicle weary travelers should have a good time. The trip will consist of ruffly a one - two hour drive around GRSF with a few mellow water crossings, then we will break for lunch and swimming at a swimming hole. After about one hour at the swimming hole we will continue the drive to the next stop which will be a easy walk to the historic and cool Paw Paw tunnel. After some time at the tunnel we will return to the vehicles and travel a short distance to ice cream in Paw Paw. After ice cream we will head back to camp.

During the driving parts of Saturday we will make many stops at overlooks and vistas. This will allow the little ones to get out stretch their legs and explore, hopefully making the day fun for everyone.

Below is the draft route we will take before lunch, the entire route will be stocker / kid friendly. There is one washed out uphill section but it will be easily passable with ATRAC.

[MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] and I went beach camping on the Outer Banks, NC this past weekend. The truck handled great in the sand. But it really made us realize we're mountain people, not beach people! We can't wait to reunite with you all in the woods at GRSF!!

Yes, the campground really is a great family-friendly place with an ice cream parlor and restaurant on-site too. The restaurant at the CG is now owned by the catering company that has catered many events at RC in the past, and they have very good food. They have lots of cabins to reserve, as well as Yurts, trailer sites and a few tent camping sites too. The CG allows 2 tents on a trailer parking site as well. This is nice because you have power/water too. They don't hassle us if we break our rigs and need to fix them in their parking lot, or even at the campsite either, as long as the "after 11pm" noise curfew is observed.

Just seeing this now. I should review the offroading thread more often. Count me, my wife and my 3 girls (9, 4, 21months) as a maybe. Awesome idea!

We're still on. I camped w/ [MENTION=162270]MrsOutbound[/MENTION] and [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] a couple of weeks ago. They've been on the road for the holiday, but we'll be plugging back in at the top of next week.

Thanks [MENTION=141503]carlos.elmotor[/MENTION]. I'll definitely be there with my 9 and 4 yr. old. Still trying to convince my wife. If she comes, we'll have our almost 2yr old as well. :lookout:
 
So guys and girls.... talk to me about camping in bear country please. I've been camping for decades, but not in the US. I grew up in Australia so I'm only used to dealing with hundreds of snakes, spiders, angry roos, crocodiles, cassawaries, dingoes and everything in the ocean. Bears are new to me and to be honest, they make me nervous. What kind of things should I have (or not have) in my camping kit? What kind of camp ground practices should I be aware of?

In our area (mid-atlantic US) black bears are what you'll see (if you see any bears).

There are all sorts of nuanced answers that perhaps some members will chime in with, but in short:
  • Keep a clean camp
  • Put food away unless you're actively eating it
  • Don't sleep with anything that has a scent
  • Don't bring anything with a scent into/onto where you'll be sleeping (other than inside your vehicle)
  • If you're in an open vehicle like a softtop jeep, hang a bear bag instead of storing food overnight in your vehicle
  • Don't cook/eat/store food where you sleep - Cooking/eating, food storage, and sleeping locations should ideally form a ~100 yard triangle from one another

That last one is for an abundance of caution and I admittedly don't follow it too closely unless I'm further West (into Grizzly country).
