Sunroof Coming Apart

While opening the sunroof I heard a snap and a piece of trim poped off the sunroof. It was a flat piece of black plastic trim that covers the passenger side of the sunroof track. It looked like one of the little plastic tab/stub that holds the trim on snapped off. The only problem is when I closed the roof I heard another snapping noise so I will not open it until I get it to the Stealer. Has anyone experienced this?

Yes, I experienced the same problem when my truck was 1 month old. As I was closing the sunroof, I heard a snap and the sunroof wouldn't close. I thought the worst and brought it to the dealer the next day. My Toyota dealer looked at it for 30 seconds and told me I needed an entire sunroof. That wasn't sitting well with me so I brought it to my buddies at a Lexus dealer and they diagnosed the problem correctly. There are two plastic pieces that line the side of the sunroof. One of them is probably warped and keeps getting stuck when you open/close the sunroof. It maade various nasty snapping sounds, but the fix was a new piece of plastic. I went back to Toyota and they hesitantly took off the piece from a new 4Runner. I haven't had any problems with my sunroof since that day.

This is an identical problem that I've had with my 05 Sport. It took the stealer almost a day to fix it, but after that there was another problem" WIND NOISE". I traded it in last November for a 06 Sport with no sunroof.

No problem's so far knock wood, I've had power sun/moon roof's in my last 5 vehicle's and never had a problem. (8 if you count my wife's last 3 vehicles).
Don't get down it on it's a nice desirable option to have.

When I first got the runner, the black piece popped out. I merely snapped it back in and yet I still hear a funny noise. Is the black piece cosmetic only? If so, I'm taking it out.

And I cannot recall the last Land Rover I saw without a sunroof.

If it's an available option I will alway's have one !! They even have theem in P/U truck's as an option. very good option IMO.

Don't knock them , yes there can be problem's like with anything mechanical,but that's life.

Like I said I've had them on many vehicles,never had a problem. This is my 1st Toyota and I guess if I have a problem on this with sun roof I will be disappointed , but would my next vehicle or 4R have on it .....you bet !!!

The sun/moonroof had to be an ABSOLUTE before I purchased my 4Runner. I agree with the above poster; if it doesn't flatter your pysche then delete this option when you make the purchase.

Really? If I had to, I'd give up 90% of the other options for a sunroof.....

Because they are add weight (mostly the motor)
Due to excessive body roll when off roading they usually break
Roll your vehicle and get a face full of broken glass.
not 100% but i believe you are stuck with headrest DVD systems since the sunroof takes up the spot where the roof DVD system would be.
it will leak

i have a sunroof in my daily driver and i only open it during the early spring and that about it.

If i lived in San Diego i can totally understand the need.

Roll your vehicle and get a face full of broken glass.
not 100% but i believe you are stuck with headrest DVD systems since the sunroof takes up the spot where the roof DVD system would be.

That's funny. First of all. most SUVs (of any brand) don't spend much time off road. Secondly, in the rare occasion you are off road with your sunroof-equipped 4Runner, and you're worried about rolling it, just keep the inside shade closed to avoid that face full of broken glass.

But I doubt many people will be driving off road in a condition that will cause them to roll over.

As far as leaking, well, 99.9% of factory sunroofs do not leak. The older t-tops were prone to leaking after the seals got really old, but that's not really a problem with factory sunroofs these days.

Sorry to break it to you, but the majority of 4Runners don't go offroad. Just like every other SUV on this planet, most of them are pavement only.

As for the Highlander, well, no thanks. Doesn't interest me.

I'll be cruisin' with my sunroof wide open, enjoying the sunshine and the wind in my hair.

Just thought about something else--if you're offroad and roll your 4Runner with the sunroof open, you won't get a face full of glass. Just one more reason to get that sunroof!

Funniest crap I've read...aparently you don't know much about vehicle structure . Sunroof vs NON sunroof roof structure is totally different along with pillar structure, and it has to be by law for a mfg. Aftermarket sunroof/moonroof are a different story......

Every truck or SUV I've had has been off roaded and flexed as far as stock & bigger tire's would allow and never had that happen, actually never happened on any of my friend's SUV's or truck's either during O/R.

Like I've said before , anything that is mechanical can break and does break from time to time. It's unfortunate that Koz is having this problem,I don't want this to happen to my 4R,but if it does I will simply get it fixed,inconvience and pain in the ass....yes,but I've got other stuff to worry about.

It's just a minor inconvenience, that is what the warranty is for. This will be the first time the 4Runner has seen the Stealer.
