Sunroof deletion on 4th gen

Hi all,

My sunroof driving me crazy as it was rattling now it stopped working altogether. As i hate the damn thing i would like to delete the whole thing sealing it permanently with a sheet metal and using a non sunroof headliner which i have found.

Here i have few questions:

1. Whether non sunroof headliner is drop in replacement?
2. Sunroof railing etc easy to remove ?
3. Is there any thread who has done it before? (searched hell out but couldn't find but sure someone posted it before as i red it)
4. Replacement headliner is a bit dirty and diff color mine is tan this is gray, can the fabric material be replaced with a new matching one

Please guide me fellow 4runner enthusiasts as i don't want to sell my truck because of stupid sunroof.

1. Whether non sunroof headliner is drop in replacement?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. But there’s slight differences between earlier years and later. For one, the rear cargo handle is only 1 hole, newer has 2 holes. Maybe 03-05/06-09. Not sure when it started

2. Sunroof railing etc easy to remove ?
Yes. It’s a couple bolts, but you probably need 2 people. It’s heavy.

3. Is there any thread who has done it before? (searched hell out but couldn't find but sure someone posted it before as i red it)
Google is your friend. It’s a colossal pain in the ass. Remove all the handles, the visors(huge PITA), all the pillars, the rear cargo trim pieces, and disconnect the 2 wiring harnesses overhead console and sunroof. Sunroof wire routes down the a pillar into the fuse box under the driver console.

4. Replacement headliner is a bit dirty and diff color mine is tan this is gray, can the fabric material be replaced with a new matching one
No, you might try painting, but it’s liable to look just as shitty. Any reason why you can’t leave in the original headliner, with your sweet viewing window to your new sheet metal?

Thanks for the reply , i understand it is huge undertaking but i want little bit headroom as well from non sunroof headliner, ok i will decide whether i want to do it or not after little bit research
 
My wife has replaced the fabric on several of our head liners over the years, I'm not sure how the T4R fabric is attached but on one of our Suburbans and on another vehicle it was just fabric glued to the plastic head liner backer/form, she simply pulled the old fabric off and used spray adhesive to reapply new head liner fabric back on, they all came out great and never came unglued over the years we still owned them.

That being said on all of the ones she did the old fabric was already very loose around all the edges or in one case the entire fabric was mostly loose all over, if the head liner fabric is still glued on very well you may be able to just glue the new fabric to the old fabric, but I would test a small area first to see how well the glue holds.

You also need to get the correct type of fabric, it's very thin, stretches easily and lightweight and made just for head liners.
