sunroof stuck open

Opened up on lunch yesterday and about 2/3 of the way open it I heard 4 LOUD clicks and she wouldn't close after that. The pass side wants to slide back but drivers side was stuck. The mechanic told me the 'track broke'. The labor is something like $285 and he's looking for a whole new sunroof through some parts yards. They got it closed fortunately....

So...do you guys think it will last another 8 years once I get it rebuilt?

Pull the fuse and forget you have it these roofs have caused many people problems including myself. Your lucky if they can do it for $285 to get mine shut they had to order a new part @ $1200 then labor on top totaled out near $2000. I then pulled the fuse and haven't used it since.
 
There is a manual way to close it, you have to push the button a certain way. Get it closed and leave it closed. I disconnected the motor after I got it shut.
 
Sunroofs are by far the most annoying, complicated, easily broken pieces I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Most manufactuers want you to replace track assemblies rather than then entire sunroof and that gets many technicnans into serious trouble, even if they know what there doing (don't ask me about BMW X5 sunroofs...). Sunroofs have always been one of those luxuries I never understood nor ever wanted.

Honestly? IF the technican can rebuild the sunroof without breaking anything and have it working properly for $285, go ahead if you like it. But I'll tell you right now, most likely what will happen is, "well this broke and it has to be replaced as an assembly" or "this part is non-reusuable, we can't get the tracks aligned right, something is still binding." As for it lasting another 8 years? I doubt it, I'm not saying it won't, but sunroofs always seem to be more hassle than they're worth.

Where's the fuse? I can't seem to locate it.
 
Sunroof stuck open

I have an 04 Sport and the sunroof stuck open today. The passenger side was trying to move but the driver's side was stuck. Every time I tried to move it, it would go 1/4 inch then retract again. And this with heavy rain in the forecast.

I read that if you hold the vent switch down for 15 seconds, it would close and IT WORKED. Grinding sounds aside, IT WORKED!!

At first I held the button down the wrong way and nothing happened. Make sure you hold it to the vent position.

The vent continues to work but I won't be using the sunroof opener again. :gun6:

I use my sunroof all the time in the summer and this thread is not reassuring. Do you have any recommendations for preventative maintenance? Should I regrease the track to prevent any issues in the future? Any specific types of grease or tips for application?

I haven't had any issues with it myself, so I haven't learned my lesson yet haha

This is a great question and I hope that somebody gives a good answer. I love my sunroof and want to keep using it too.
