Supercharger on an higher mileage engine?

When I saw the supercharger thread yesterday I mentioned it to an FJ friend of mine. It turns out he has a 2009 so this one wasn't for him but he mentioned that he had been told that you shouldn't put a supercharger on an engine that has over 30k miles on it.

Have any of you heard anything similar? Living at altitude I am very interested in a supercharger when/if it is ready for the 5th gen but I am already at 33k miles. :driving:

Should I start resigning myself to never getting one or is there still hope?

There's nothing wrong with supercharging an engine with 30k+ miles. Plus, the TRD tunes are so tame and boost so low, you really have nothing to worry about.

Exactly, nothing wrong with it at all. From what I remember, the TRD blowers only run 3-4lbs of boost. The performance is very conservative in favor of reliability and longevity.

EDIT*** I stand corrected, They run 5-6 lbs of boost, not 3-4lbs.

That's just dumb. Wouldn't that also mean, then, that if one put a S/C on a 15k engine, it'd only run to 30k?

There are S/C'd Toyotas running with 125k on them.

Perhaps its dumb, but not necessarily. Maybe the thought was that after a certain amount of miles the engine has broke in, settled in, worn in (how ever you want to describe it) such that putting a new supercharger on a worn engine could potentially have tolerance issues. If you put a new SC on a new(er) engine they would wear in together? Probably not likely but I could see a potential path where it *might* have made sense.

Did not mean to be rude. If the source(s) of your information is reliable or in publication or textbook by all means cite your sources. My point is "a friend, or cousin or dad" brings no credibility to the conversation. If your friend is chief engineer for Bendix for example then cite the engineer at Bendix part, not the friend part. If you just heard something, by all means ask the question just leave out the source unless it is a good one. Again, sorry.

No worries and no need to apologize, sometimes I forget that my normal extraordinary level of daily sarcasm doesn't always translate to the message boards.

I hear you on citing references but in this case I wasn't claiming that he was an expert nor that we should attach any specific weight to what was said because it came from him. The germain part of the post was the actual question, not so much the source of where it came from.

You're right, I suppose I could have started the post with - 'I've heard that ...' but I suppose I still would have got a "Another 'I've heard . . . post'" response.

There is some merit to not placing a SC on a high milage engine. But 30K is not high mileage. Not really even broken in by today's standards. And 3-4psi is a very minor boost if those numbers are accurate.

Install and be happy, even if you wait another 100K. :cowboy:

Do it!! Well when its actually available for the 4runner....

I just S/C'd my 3rd gen with 144k if that makes you feel better about it. Different engine and generation of course....but I wouldn't hesitate at 30k especially with the TRD one as others have said.

Besides youre already considering it, the idea is growing in your mind...Inception!
