Supercharger Ping Issue- Need Help

So....i'm running down clues....Been looking at timing...coolant temps...

I just did a 500 mile trip from the bay area back to socal....one thing which concerned me was my coolant tempts. ECT on my obd was showing from 213 all the way to 221 Fahrenheit. The only time temps dipped to low 200s was when i turned off overdrive going up some big hills

This is almost all highway driving going 70-75-80 on the I-5 (mostly flat incline). Temps were from 92 all the way down to 70.

Radiator and fluid are new.....water pump was changed 25k ago by previous owner. No idea on the thermostat.

What gives? Is this normal on a supercharged rig? Or are temps way too high?

And could this be causing the intermittent ping under boost?

Yes that's too high. At 230 the needle moves towards the red area of the gauge. I think you found the anomaly causing the pinging as an engine running that hot won't like boost one bit.

Just ordered 2 thermostats....the oem 180 one and a 170 one designed for the corolla. Going to compare/contrast and if they're both identical (forums say they should be)...then i'm going to install.

Have a strong feeling this (plus slightly dirty injectors) have been the cause..

You are in SoCal so this is probably a non-issue. I run the 170* thermostat as it hits up to 110 each year up here in Sacramento but it does affect the heater function in the winter. It drops the heater temps in the cab by 20 degrees. Probably not an issue but worth noting. I only notice it when I travel up in the Sierras in the winter snow and the coolant temperature doesn't get past 165 degrees on my scanner.

Ah this is great to know since i do spend some time in the sierras each year. That said....90% of my trips are in socal type weather....so the 170 should be gtg...

What are the typical temps that you see with you 170 stat?

I got the head gasket done with all OEM parts in the 4afe Corolla/prizm, and had the pistons (while in the cylinder bore) soaking in diesel for 2 weeks to remove carbon buildup around the piston rings. I did not do any cylinder head job, such as resurfacing the valve seats etc: After the HG job, I do not hear the ping any more on same driving conditions: 10 BTDC before and after the repair. Looks like weak compression would lead to ping as well. The car have good pulling power as well.

So went in and changed out the thermostat. The jiggle valve was in the wrong position causing the engine to run around 25 degrees hotter than normal (215-220 on a cool night at highway speeds).

Some people advised putting in a 170 thermostat (oem from a corolla) and i did that....the truck now runs at 175-180 temps (vs 185-190 for the oem 180 stat). I also ran some fuel injector cleaner through the system.

Right now, the ping is all gone....i'm going to keep testing and see if it comes back for any reason. Have a strong feeling it was caused by dirty injectors and 25 degree hotter engine temps...

Thanks again to everyone for all the help!
