Supercharger- what to look out for

That might be a good find. offer him $3K cash and you'd have a 4WD 4Runner with 130K miles, plus a SuperCharger.

Going to look at a 98 with a factory installed supercharger. I know what to look for and ask in regards to the rest of the truck but am not familiar with the supercharger and what to look listen/for.

Any help would be great.

I see why you are asking. There's a lot to that 4Runner and for the price he's selling at, you will need to ask questions and try and get some honest questions.

Here's my list I would ask:

1. Edelbrock doesn't make headers for the 4Runner. EDIT: I found a set. Looks like they were made around the same time these 4Runners were new but were discontinued soon after.

2. How was the Supra MAF installed, and does he have the OEM parts to switch it back (including any wiring repairs)? Tuning for a bigger MAF isn't a plug and play deal. I didn't go that route for a reason, especially since the Supra MAF is still just an oversized turbine-style MAF that restricts airflow, just less of it.

3. What piggyback controller is installed and what has been modified for the tune (O2 sensor, fuel injectors, etc.)? Sounds like it might be the URD 6 injector upgrade kit.

4. Has it ever been tuned on a dyno? If yes, does he have the dyno sheet? Torque curve should be fairly flat or the tune was done wrong.

5. How many miles on the supercharger, if known? If the black kind, a new nose cone and oil is all that's needed to get it back up and running in top shape.

If there's a check engine light at all, seriously consider if you want it or not. Badly wired piggyback controllers can be extremely hard to track down, just helped a friend and he had to have his controller completely re-wired to clean up a P0125. Also, you'll want to be able to do a full-throttle run to make sure it runs well at high boost. If he won't let you do that, have him do it and if he won't, just assume something is wrong with either the engine or the piggyback and tune.

Offer him $3k and buy it. even if the truck is junk you can get most of your money back from parting it out and selling the supercharger.

as for inspecting the SC there is only so much you can do.

1. check sc oil and make sure there is some in there (mine was dry when I bought it)

2. wiggle the pulley and make sure there is no play. the bearings and coupler in the nosecone are the wear items. if the pulley moves then the nosecone should be replaced.

Not supercharger related but cheap 4runner is the northeast usually have bad frame rust (especially around the rear LCA mounts). Just thought I'd toss that out there too.

is it possible to swap over dash clusters and an ECU and get lower miles?

because I agree that thing has seen some fun's.

Cluster swapping is plug and play...
I bought and returned a 00 limited 4x4 with only 117xxx miles when I found out it was more than 250xxx miles in... big ass headache...

Check the car fax...

when I'm buying I always get the VIN and run a fax before I even go look. armed with extra info when buying is always good.

I was looking @ an older Camry for a friend and the car fax showed an couple of accidents and 2 other owners and some missing millage mysteries. still was a good little first car and we got a really really good deal once we showed the seller the car fax. he was lying his teeth out about it and we busted him. I only felt bad for maybe like 2 seconds for using that info against him. I guess I'm evil.

Toyota are tough little suckers and can take a beating so people do all kinds of shady things.

I have never looked into how to trick the ODO but I'm guessing it's not hard at all.

You don't even have to swap the cluster in the old ones with the dials... just take it out and rotate the numbers...

So I checked it out. Body was fairly clean, frame not terrible, Little Bit of rust but nothing that would keep me from buying it. Interior was trashed in my opinion, leather was decent, carpets and everything else stained and messed up. He told me everything plugged up for the Supra MAF. It ran fine from what I could tell, full throttle, idle, etc. the supercharger was hot as hell after a short test drive, is this normal? It was also making a strange noice or seemed noisey. It was the black top, installed 50k ago with a rebuilt nose cone in the last year. Timing belt and water pump done at 80k with no documentation.

Sorry for a noob question, on an SC 4runner, how many psi of boost do you see?

At sea level, a stock supercharger with the 2.37" pulley puts out 7 PSI max. At elevation due to loss of air density that drops to 6 or 5.

There are aftermarket pulleys (2.2", 2.1") which cause the supercharger to rotate faster and produce more boost. The 2.2" will put out about 9 PSI, while the 2.1" will put out 11 PSI, respectively.
