Superman3043's Build Thread

bobby had a shaky steering wheel and thought it was his wheel spacers. he just learned he had a few broken belts in his old radials.. before getting the new tires

BTW bobby does your steering still vibrate after the new tires were installed?

Good points, and no more vibrations with my new set up. Feels pretty smooth too! Also, i'm running spacers with the new wheels. It looks sick :D

I wouldn't worry about the pan rod bar and lower rear links as long as you stay around 3" it is barely off compared to stock but it is off.

Nice build! I can't wait to see those 33x12.5" mud grapplers on there. They look awesome but are extremely loud (as i'm sure you already know). My buddy had some and I always knew he was on his way when he was about a mile from my house. Ha

I have been eyeing those Clazzio seat covers for a few years now. I just never made the purchase. They look amazing though. Its hard to tell in the pictures but I assume they are black with gray stitching? Also, is there any smell after the install (I would love that new, leather smell)? FYI, the sport editions with dark charcoal seats do have the same gray seat belts.

Im jealous of your new coilovers too. I've been trying to find a deal on a used set of those for a while. I would be changing my ride height all the time if I had them though. Im stuck at 38.5" in front but still want a little more. I may look into the 1" BL as well.

Thanks so much for the compliments man! Yeah, I've been so excited about getting those tires on all week. The anticipation has been killing me since I've actually had the tires for a month and a half now. Yeah, I expect a fair amount of noise, but it's the price ya gotta pay. Everyone I've talked to, and all the research I've done, seem to love them.

I'm still very pleased with my Clazzios. They're actually black with ivory stitching (keeping the theme tied in). And YES, you absolutely get the leather smell and it's great! Probably one of my favorite things about the mod.

I'm happy to have finally gotten the front suspension done. It's been a long time coming. I decided to piece build my suspension as budget allowed instead of saving up and doing it all at once, and as you know, the C/O's are the crown jewels (most expensive component) of the system. I was pretty fortunate to get them because he had a ton of interest in them when he posted them. He only had them on his truck for like 4 months before it was totaled and since it was a 2wd running lift spindles, he never even cranked them. Just left them at stock ride height. I don't think you'd be adjusting them all the time though. It's actually sort of a PITA. I just took a swag at pre-load amount pre-install. Drove it, measured it, adjusted it the amount I thought it might take to achieve my desired height, and don't care to fool with it again. I actually was targeting some rake, but currently she sits perfectly level and I'm pretty pleased with the stance, so I don't really care to tweak it any further. You've got a good amount of lift if you're @ 38.5". At last measure I'm only @ 39". 24" hub to fender so by my math I'm only getting 15" of height from my tire, but I suppose it's because of how it flattens out on the ground. I expect to gain another 1/2" from the new rubber. That's with the 1" BL, but yeah, def go for it! Cheap, easy, definitely looks good. I'm very pleased with it.

Take it easy man! LMK if you got any questions.

I know! Though I had to have mine put on the night I got them. I have no idea how you've waited over a month.
It's gonna look great!
What's your plan after those?

It was tough. I'm normally very impatient too. Especially since I got a peak at what it was gonna look like during the test fit where they hit my UCA's. But it was what it was, because I didn't want to do UCA's without coil-overs, and for that, I needed to wait for more money. Then we had vacation and all, so everything was pushed further back.

I think this will hold me over for a little bit while I save for a Demello front bumper. Then a winch and LED light bar looks to be on the docket.

What about you? What's next? I know you've got sliders inbound.

The bumper is going to look fab! I'd love to get one but crap they cost a pretty penny!
Yeah, my sliders are still sitting in my front room. I have to get them painted and welded on. I've also got the materials for my Satoshi grill too. Just need to get moving on them. Then I think I'll be done for a while... so I say :)

......well, we're waiting. Ha

Ok, OK... Sorry for the suspense. Because I kill so much of my work week screwing around with you guys on here, I try to make it a point to limit my weekend exposure to forums, xbox live, and basically all things internet in order to focus on "hubby time".

So no major snags to report. I was prepared with a contingency that consisted of longer studs and various spacers (1/4" and 15mm) just in case they still did not clear my UCA's when I got them home. Fortunately they did, if just barely. I really didn't want to run the big hub-centric spacers like the spider-trax because I was trying to avoid "Mexican Low-Rider" stance as Gaterose puts it. But I also wasn't keen on running the small spacers either if I didn't have to. It would just have been so sad to have have aftermarket wheels with more offset and still have to run wheel spacers. So far, I've only got a little scrubbing that only occurs some times in reverse with the wheel at half cock on the driver side fender. It's very minimal and doesn't happen every time. Also, when they were first put on it almost seemed like the internal side lugs would contact the UCA slightly when the suspension compressed... That one seemed to remedy itself after a little while. Some of you know what I mean.

My initial thoughts on the Mud Graps? First off... LOUD! Like everybody knows. I've often heard the "howl" likened to a WWII fighter plane... I'd say that comparison is very accurate. And like most guys who own these, I love it! Brings a smile to my face and I find it actually sort of soothing. Plus, if I don't like it, it gives me a chance to put this nice system to work :). You can feel the knobby treads bump at low speeds but then they roll very round and true at speed, unlike a Bogger. I haven't really noticed much of a lugging or lack of power from running such a wide tire that some folks notice. The looks are just pure NASTY and they feel sticky as hell. After the alignment, everything rides great! I'll get a video up soon so that those who haven't heard them or wonder what they sound like on a 4R can get a chance. Would have done it sooner, but my oil change light is on and I don't want you cats clowning me for not changing my oil yet, haha!

So here we go. This first set of pics was taken with a hand-me-down camera from my old man, which I have no clue how to use. These are my first shots with it so forgive the photography noobiness:

hittin' easy street on Mud Tires...

This second set of shots was done with my iPhone and processed with some fake HDR type effects. Call me crazy, but I like these better:

So we've got a trail ride scheduled at Uwharrie National Forest this Sunday with my 4R Bros, Aha2988 and darklight. Myselft and Darklight will get a chance to debut our M/T's. He recently got some Hankook Dynapro M/T's and some new sick black wheels for his rig. Looks to be a great time and we'll report back after the ride. Anybody who's looking to be in the area is welcome to come meet up and ride with us.

Thanks for checking out the build and take care!

Looks SICK! Good luck with rubbing, hoping they don't rip something off flexed out off road.

Thanks Matt! Yeah, you and I both. I guess I should cycle everything through with a jack and play with the front end lock to lock before the trip to see if I'm gonna run into any problems. I was just too excited to finally get them on and ride around that I didn't want to hear any "problems".

Hey PD,
You need to delete the photos in your album and repost them. It was nice logging in today and seeing them on the home page of the forum! Sexy a$$ truck you have!

Amazing! Those 12.5"s totally changed the look of your truck. Glad to hear you like the sound, for some its an acquired taste. Ha. I'm surprised you don't have anymore rubbing that what you've mentioned. Of course you will have new rubbing once you start flexing offroad but I figured you would have more on-road too. You mention it contacts the fender at 1/2 turn, does this imply that it rubs more in 1/2 than at full turn? I'm not sure how much offset your Rockstars have either but sounds like they have the "ideal" offset for those tires.

Haha! Thank you Ma'am! I'm not gonna do that, but how about we just keep building these gorgeous trucks up and posting into albums so that we always have 4th gens representing on the home page? I know I don't really use the album feature that much unless I need smaller pictures. It's just so much easier to dump them in the Photobucket album and embed them in the build thread.

Thank you Sir! Yeah at certain glances I feel like the recent changes (tires, front suspension, sliders) only subtly changed the exterior appearance, but then at closer looks it's like "WOW, what a difference!" At least to those who know what they're looking at or for.

Yeah, I do get a kick out of the "NMG howl". It's music to us rednecks. Thank goodness I live around a lot of like-minded folks who love mud tires or I'd certainly be getting a lot more crazy looks driving down the road, haha.

I expected to do a lot more trimming than I've done as well. With my old tires, the only things I had to do was remove the front mud flaps, push the fender liner forward, and just barely trim the lower edge of the front edge of the front fender where it turns into the wheel well. Right now I've seen some new witness marks on the inner most portion of the rear edge of the front fender well (like where the body mount is), and some just a little higher up on the front lip (where I'd already trimmed). All of them are very minute.

Yes, the only time I've ever gotten any contact (with this or the previous set-up) is while backing up with the wheel cut at a certain angle (not full lock). It does fine at full lock traveling in either direction.

I'm gonna try to play with it and cycle it through and trim this evening when I'm changing my oil. I think my coil-overs have been saving me from a lot of scrubbing. I don't really know what rate these coils have, but they're STOUT. Let's just say that when I pick up the LCA, I don't see very much visible compression before the whole front end of the truck starts coming up. Don't get me wrong, it still rides great, but definitely stiffer than the old set-up. I do get a great amount of droop though. I guess these CO's being extended travel might have something to do with that.

I would say, you're right about "ideal" offset with this set-up when combined with the LR UCA camber adjustment let all the way out. It's basically tucked as tight to the spindle as it could comfortably be... Almost too close for comfort.
