Surf's Down

Only problem I see is the steering wheel, other than that looks great!

Not really a problem. There are a million companies that will "redo" the leather on the steering wheel.

I would go through this truck the same way, anything that needed replacing would be, but it's a very good point.

Sounds like you are "going for it"? That's great! Keep us posted! Good Luck!

I think he meant what side the steering wheel is on, lol.

I think I've talked myself into it, just need to convince the wife now and we are off to the races!

Holy smokes Ian!

A/T diesel with the original electric winch? I would very happily total my 4Runner if I knew one of those would be waiting for me!

Cheers,
Gustavo.

WOW, sick Landcruiser. A buddy of mine has a imported RHD diesel one and runs 37's!!! Such a bad ass cruiser...

Who is the importer you are going through?

Well, I know Im a little behind on this, but I just looked at this thread for the first time, and glad to hear you're ok Ian. Its just amazing that a person could do that - a hit and run. I mean you hit someone and potentially seriously injure or even kill them and then respond by running away from your actions like a coward. Maybe it was a teenage girl who was just scared to death, but still.

So have the police looked into the vin you gave them yet?

The LC would be awesome man! Ive thought about trading my 3rd gen for an 80 series, but you know that gas mileage thing . . .

It's not 100% for sure yet, but if everything checks out I think we have a winner. I'm dealing with Mark @ Brave Auto, the same guy I brought the Surf in through. He's VERY thorough, you know exactly what your getting from him.

I'm expecting about the same fuel economy as I was getting in the Surf, maybe a touch worse in town. Not bad.:D

I was just on the Brave Auto website. There's some really nice stuff on there... like, really nice. So nice, that I should not be looking....

Is the LC a diesel?

Edit: Nevermind. I just read the discription on the last page. What kind of mileage did you get with your Surf?

It's 4.2L of inline 6 diesel fury!

I was getting 20mpg city, best of 23mpg highway with the surf. I was on the cusp of doing 3" mandrel bent exhaust, and I really felt that would help the fuel economy in a big way, but I'll never know I guess. I'll just do the exhaust on the LC instead!

Man, its just not fair that we cant register Toyota's diesels here in the US! It makes me want to punch a kitten

I love the lc's but gosh I hate all those dials and knobs!!! I feel like you can travel in time if you hit 88mph!

I would say get another surf. Maybe an 02 or 01? The new styles.

Forgive me if this question is a bit neive, but do the Yota diesels belch soot plumes like the hilbilly-mall-crusher trucks?

It would be nice if there were more offerings in the *healthy* diesel category here in the US...

They have to be 15 years old to import to Canada, so the newest I could go atm is '97. I did look into this, but things have changed, and it is nowhere close to economical to bring in another Surf in that condition, they are selling for 2-3x more at auction in Japan compared to when I bought mine. The whole earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown, paired with Sri Lanka changing their laws to allow RHD imports has changed the market for the worse.

My surf had an electronically controlled injection pump (OBD0), and it emitted minimal black smoke maybe half dozen times in the entire time I had it, usually at the top of 2nd gear at wide open throttle. The LC I'm getting is a full mechanical injection pump, so the potential is there to emit some soot I suppose as there's no electronic compensation. On the other hand, tuning for more boost is a matter of backing off the lock nuts and making adjustments, whereas the Surf required electronic trickery so you were basically $1000 into it before you could start making changes beyond 14.5psi. The potential to make power is FAR greater on the LC.

Diesels belch black smoke when there is too much fuel for the air, the cure is to simply turn up the boost! When you have black smoke/unburned fuel is also the conditions where your EGT's are way too high, and you can damage the engine. "Rolling coal" may look cool to the redneck/re**** crowd, but it's not desireable IMO.

I'm curious how/where I get some pricing info regarding the diesel cruisers on that website? Do you have to just inquire via phone?

In the event he has stock held for sale, there will be a price listed. He doesn't carry much stock anymore (my Surf was in stock when I bought it). At this point, he pretty well buys on spec, so you contact him, let him know what you're looking for, with what options, mileage, etc, what your budget is, and he watches the auctions for you. I lucked out and he had just picked the one I'm looking at up, but had not posted it on the site yet.

It's much cheaper than buying one that's already imported and held for sale at any of the Canadian based importers, many of them actually buy through Brave Auto (I won't name names here though).

I've never actually spoken to him on the phone, everything was done via email.

Hmmm, very interesting. I know that the diesel landcruisers fetch a premium out here so I was curious what a rough price point would be for one. I definitely fell in love with this one, looking through the "sold" inventory list:
