Surprising Difference with Discount Gas

Pardon me for bringing up an old thread. I was reading through this and had to chime in just to clarify... Sounds like Northof49 is the only one who know's what he's talking about.

#1... Water and oil / fuel don't mix... first graders know that. Since they separate out, if your motor gets a nice blast of water, the motor will die. It makes no sense for retailers to intentionally "water down" their supply then does it?

#2... People who only buy fuel from Chevron because "they add techron to their gas" are idiots. Many fuel companies add techron... Chevron just advertises it. So those big shots who want to look good buying from Chevron are just looking stupid for paying more. :D

#3... Yes... fuel mileage varies by driving conditions, not by retailers gas. Woopie!
 
I have used BP / Amoco gas over the years because I was told their gas was better for fuel injected cars. After having carbon build up problems in the throttle body of two of my vehicles I did a little reading. Based on some independent comparisons I've read, I think I'll give the top tier gas companies a try. I've started using Texaco gas. I don't know who's right, I'm not a mechanic or chemist. By the way, Toyota Motor Co. recommends the use of top tier gas. That in itself is enough of a reason for me to try it.

Someone I work with had a fuel system issue on a gen 1 CRV. When serviced, the techs asked her if she used BP gas. When she said yes, they sponded, "DON'T".

It is true that all stations in an area are getting there gasoline from one or two refineries (we have a BP and a Sun Oil refinery in my area). It is also true that the additives are added in the tanker trucks. The additives CAN make a difference.

Prior to the fed gov setting minimal standards on detergents in gasoline, most gasoline actually had more detergent in it than it has now. Once the min standards were set, most gas companies lowered their amount of detergents. They saved money, yet could state that their product meets federal standards.

Purchasing from a discount station is getting you the same gasoline....true. But it is not getting you the same additives. And just because the additives meet federal standards doesn't mean that's what's best for your vehicle.

Do you think BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi got together just for the heck of it to create Top Tier? No. They all have experienced what "meets federal standards" gasoline can do to their fuel systems.

Gasoline won't make the huge difference in gas mileage referred to by the original poster. But over time, it will make a difference in engine performance (and thus gas mileage).

the big super station(more than 10 pumps) aroung here is go-mart, if I use their gas or the gas from the grocery store I lose adout 2 mpg. My best mpg is from exxon or shell.
 
The difference might not be because of the gas. I got 18 MPG on a 6-hour ski trip last winter after filling up at a Shell station. I was driving conservatively to try and get the best possible fuel economy.

On the trip home, we filled up at a Valeo station (I believe it is considered discount gas) and I ended up getting 22 MPG, despite the fact that I drove very aggressively. My right foot was on the floor plenty of times on the way home and I was driving much faster because I wasn't trying to get good gas mileage.

I can't really explain it, but I was very surprised that I got so much better fuel economy on the way home. I wonder if it was the direction I was heading?

Also if there is ethonal in the gas it effects the MPG. Like on the way to New Mexico there were gas stations offering premium cheaper than regular, the reason? Premium had 10% ethonal, the regular did not.

Relax! Most members here enjoy a laid back forum free of the typical "talk is cheap" mentality so prevalent on many other forums.
