Suspension Choices

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get opinions on suspension.
After a bunch of google work and wasting hours on this website, it seems like ICON is a great choice for a suspension lift for quality, but the price is a bit steep. I think there are some KINGS out there also which bring in good quality of a ride. Others are RADFLO (mixed reviews), TOYTEC (mixed reviews), BILSTEINS (good basic lift), and a few others, please chime in if you have any of the others.

So what would you say is the best suspension lift, w/ coil over, for the price?

Anybody have bad experiences, more than welcome to jump in also. I know there are some "clunky" reviews on RADFLO.

Cheers

Prepare to be flamed...

Even if you get any serious answers, you will just be reading the same information you have already read (if you "wasted" hours on this website). You need to include information such as your current uses of the vehicle....future uses for the vehicle....budget....etc.

If money is no issue...you will probably get an overwhelming Icon response (up to $2k-$5k). There is a good thread going on right now about the different stages. Need something a little more budget friendly with decent performance....go with the Toytec Ultimate ($1200). If you don't want/need the adjustability of coilovers and need something a little more budget friendly that you can build on later....go with bilstein shocks and maybe a spacer in the rear if you are going for max lift ($400). Just need a cosmetic look for mall crawling...go with a spacer lift ($200). There are a lot more options under, over and in between all of the above mentioned. Good luck!

Give this a shot http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-t...far-more-accurately-than-standard-method.html

ICON is really not all that expensive if you package it correctly.

I have ICON right now.

Here is what you should get:

ICON front Coilovers (normal not extended) $1200
ICON rear springs $220
ICON rear shocks $160

Total: $1580

That's all you need! And you will have a very capable and good driving truck. You will have to leave the front coilovers at stock height. Leaving the coilovers overs at stock height is perfect. If you want to go beyond the stock height setting than you should get UCA's.

I would NOT get toytec coilovers. The Bilsteins are the same off the shelf valving for OEM spring rates, everyone just sticks what ever springs on them they want. IMHO the Bilsteins are under damped on 600-650# springs. When it comes to spending this much money better to just do it right the first time.

I just got back from a 2,000 mile road trip from Southern California to Moab and Canyonlands UT. My basic ICON kit did very well. Highly recommend this kit.

Thanks FatTires
No rock crawlin, mainly a weekend warrior camping trip, fun expeditions to get away from civilization. I grew up in the woods of Maine, and there is nothing better than traveling the less traveled road. 2-3" lift, added clearance, UCAs, with ability to handle the bumps, rough roads, as well as some speed.
I had a Tacoma, in SoCal, and did up the works on it. TacomaWorld was my friend in those times...

chmura,
why do you say not the extended? just curious. I would probably add the UCAs, but glad you are happy with it. What size tires are you running with the setup?

Sounds like you know your needs. If you have the $1500-$2k it is hard to beat the icon setup...metal tech tends to have the best packages put together. From your description above...depending on how bumpy your road and how fast you want to be able to take it, I believe the Bilstein set-up will suit you just fine as mine has. Add some stiffer springs Down the line if you add some more weight.

If you know for sure you want UCA's than get the extended front coilovers. If not save yourself $600 and do not get UCA's and get the normal ICON coilovers.

The extended coilover is a tad longer and has 7/8 inch of more travel so to maximize this you need to get a aftermarket UCA.

I'm fairly confident if you go with the normal ICON coilovers you will be able to make any trail that people running extended 7/8" ICON coilovers can.

If I had to do it again I would keep my stock UCA and get the normal coilovers (save$600). My after market UCA's tend to creek and make little noise even after zerking them with Total Chaos recommended grease. Stock UCA's are whisper quiet. Cant beat that. Plus I kept the fronts coilovers at the factory ICON presets. If doing this you can pass alignment just fine.

Have a pic of what your stance is with the icons set at factory preset?
