Suspention Help!?!?! cant decide.

So I'm stuck between two different shocks for my 4runner, and i don't know which is better for me. ill be using it a lot on the road, but i do want to drive it hard off road. i don't mind a rough ride as long as its bearable (on the road). I really need them to be able to take a beating since i be taking it every where, you know that saing me against the world, same thing. The two I'm deciding on is Icon's 2.5 full kit, and Overland Warehouse 2.5 full kit. any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated. needs to be good at high speeds and take a beating. also needs to clear the 33 in tires im going to install later.

Do you have or are you planning on any additional weight (i.e bumpers, skids, sliders, etc)? If not, the OW 2.0 kit would be great, a much better fit than the two you mentioned. All the benefits of the 2.5 kit but a smoother ride on road since it's designed for a 4runner at stockish weight. Hard to go wrong with either, but I'd personally go with the OW kit.
 
I vote for OW. I know and have wheeled with the owners many times and they are great guys. Although I don't have their suspension on my personal car (got my Fox before they released their kit) I have yet to see any complaints with it. Also, I never cease to hear how awesome their customer service is. I would rather have my money go to 4Runner enthusiasts who are constantly trying to come out with more products for our rig.

I do have some first hand experience with Icon. I had their stage 6 kit on a 5th Gen Trail Edition and it didn't ride that well. In their defense though the coilovers were cranked down to get more lift than they probably should have been(show car, it was for looks mainly), and the truck had pretty big wheels which never help the ride. It was great if I hit things at speed but around town the ride was super busy and jarring.

Icon just has their standard suspension. Overland warehouse has a kit for standard weight rigs and another for ones that are planning on adding bumpers, winches, dual batteries etc... They are really good about making whatever it is that you need.

As for quality, they both use very similar parts. The biggest difference IMHO is that the OW kit was sprung and valved specifically for 4Runners and all the testing was done on 4Runners.

I know the owner of ICON and he is a big Toyota guy and valves specifically for each application. Crap, he won the Baja even in his class with an FJ Cruiser.

The guy knows his stuff, he engineers and machines everything they put out.

i do plan on getting all of the other things mentioned above, exactly how much weight im not sure but a winch bumper, skids, and sliders are what i have in mind. other things like a rear bumper with tire holder. but yes in short i am going to add weight.
 
If you're adding all that weight then you're definitely gonna want the 2.5 kit.

I don't know which is better between icon and radflo as I haven't had either, but I have read a lot of reviews as I plan to upgrade to OW eventually.

Icon seems better respected in the overall 120 (FJ, Taco, & 4R) community and they make more stuff but it's mostly for the FJ. While FJ stuff does fit the 4R perfectly fine, their suspension is tuned for the weight and vehicle dynamics of the FJ.

The OW springs and shocks are tuned and valved specifically for the 4runner, and if you tell the people at OW what you plan to add (front & rear bumper, sliders, skids, fridge, rack, etc.) they'll be able to give you a setup to match what you want to do. They are 4th gen 4runner owners/wheelers with experience in the field testing and tuning their stuff.

The OW 2.5 kit uses 700lbs springs up front vs 650lbs springs for the ICON's. the 700lbs springs are supposed to handle the extra weight much better.

The valving on the ICON's are shared across both the 4Runner and Tacoma (the label on my coilovers were for the Tacoma and share the same sku). As BlairB mentioned earlier, the 2.5 kit was tested and valved on 4Runners with all the mods you plan to add.

You can contact ICON directly and let them know what your needs/plans are for your build and they can custom valve your suspension for you if that's the route you want to go with however, OW has already done that work for you.

I run ICON's and they do very well with the added weight so you won't go wrong either way. If you plan to do high speed runs, then you might want to lean towards ICON since they offer remote resi fronts and piggyback rears to minimize shock fade. OW does not currently have this option last time i checked.

well i need to know because i plan on running 33" rubbers on my 4runner. if i do get the ICON's will i get enough clearence at a safe hight, i dont want to put to much stess on the suspention if its out all the way. and i know the extra weight will make quite a differnce in the end to. thats why i leaned over to OW for the most part. and thanks to every one for the feed back. great stuff.:thanks:

Both kits will be able to clear 33's with approx 3" lift.
 
Not sure if you've made a decision yet, but OW will do custom set-ups as well with 650lbs springs on the 2.5" CO's. If your going to be sticking close to stock weight, I can tell you first hand it rides awesome.
 
I bought the OW 2.5 kit and absolutely love it. I am running 285/70/17 (almost 33) and have no rubbing. This is my DD and it handles/rides great on the road. When I go off road it is very rough and occasionally hit speeds of 30-50 mph and it handles so nice. If I was to do it again I wouldn't change a thing. Hope this helps.
 
I recommend OW since I have tried them all and since I installed the OW's 2.5 I have had no issue from high speed offroading to slow crawling offroading.

I have one of the few sets of OW 2.5 before they officially was released.
