T-case FSM

I've got the 2,2xx page FSM for the 4Runner, but I'm looking for the t-case one. I know there's a transmission one out there, and I also know theres a t-case one as well.

I need to try and see if I can get the t-case I have now to work with the Tacoma t-case that I stripped the input shaft off of.

My plan is to take them apart, and see if I can swap the gears and chain on to the good input shaft, but don't really want to do this without a pic of everything.

I searched, but couldn't find anything for the 3rd gen.

Either 3rd gen WITHOUT ADD or a 1st Gen Tacoma will suffice.

There are no 3G 4Runners w/o ADD. They all had it. While there is an A/T manual, I am not aware of a TC manual. I have seen A/C, Collision, and A/T, but never TC. I can't find anything for my TC (VF2A) beyond what is in the big FSM. Why do you think there is one? Which TC do you have?

I've seen FSMs for the gear driven t-case, which had an exploded parts diagram. I scanned through the entire 4Runner FSM and can't find what I'm looking for.

What year, V6 or 4cyl. ? Is the trans manual, or just the TC? What year FSM are you looking at (the on-line is 2002 and has nothing for 5-speeds or J-shift)? Because I think my '99 has what you need; as soon as I nail down what you have, I'll scan it.

I originally had a Tacoma 3.4L t-case behind it. I managed to strip the input shaft, see my build thread for that one, and stuck a j-shift out of a '96 runner in it.

NOW, I need to get my speedo working again, want to see if I can just do what I think I can, by pulling input shafts and adding the speedo gear out of the Tacoma t-case on to the shaft. If that makes sense.

If you have the j-shift t-case without the CDL, in a j-shift, you have what I need, and will be forever grateful.

E-mail with scans sent. Can't help you on the speedo, as my 5-speed is different. But I'll look and see if the FSM has anything specific on speedo sender.

I can confirm that a '96 VF2a on a 4Runner and a '99 VF2A on a Taco (both A/t V6) use the same gear 33481-35200. Sending you one more scan on how to reassemble speedo gear. (Gear on far right in diag below)

No, they don't ALL have the gear. Was the '96 out of a 5-speed? They don't seem to have the gear and just a blind cover where the driven gear goes. I just meant it CAN have a gear. Are you planning on replacing the driven speedo gear, the drive gear, or both?

My '99 5-speed VF2a doesn't have it either.

I have the speed sensor with the gear on it, off of a Tacoma. It is currently wired to a Dakota Digital SGI-5, which is then DIRECTLY wired into my cluster. This was done because when I did the manual hub conversion, and the 8.4 with leafs in the back, I lost my ABS and my speedo.

The SGI-5 allows you to adjust your speedo for gears or tires, WITHOUT having to replace the speed sensor gear.

My issue came up when I swapped the '96 t-case, which came out of an automatic, into the truck because the top bolts on my clocking ring broke, causing the Tacoma t-case to droop, stripping the input shaft. Once I put the '96 t-case in, I lost my speedo.

My plan is to add the speedo gear, inside the t-case, from the Tacoma t-case to the '96 t-case.

However, I might just swap the input shafts, as long as the gears are the same.

So, I guess to answer your question [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION], I'm going to replace the speedo sensor drive gear. Or add it if it's not in there already.

Perfect. Should work. keep us posted. So was there a driven gear on the '96 or did you transfer the one from the Taco? Did you mean output shaft? It looks to be on the output shaft--which makes more sense. And the part number for the output shaft does show as the same between a '96 4Runner and a '97 Taco. I only ask these questions as I'm trying to help.

That's why I asked about the driven gear. If there was no driven gear, it makes sense the drive gear would be missing.
