My SAS leafsprung 1st gen feels as smooth as my IFS 5th gen on 33s due to the amount of air i can let out of my bigger tires.. (although this is only offroad)

I hate solid axles.... I value comfort too much.... But then I see stuff like this..... Gorgeous!

I read through this thread, but maybe missed it; did you all ever look if the IFS could be modified/customized for the 40s? Or did you all set out to make this an SAS? I do not know a lot about the IFS, so it may be a stupid question.

I vote for the Mod/build/transformation of the year! :bigok: :bigok: :bigok:

Green with Envy. puts my floor mat mod to shame!

I think it's fair to say yes - ifs *can* handle 40's. It has a lot of inherent limitations for things like articulation. The stock IFS is probably not strong enough for 40's. But it certainly can be built to handle 40's with enough money and effort. A SAS is almost certainly easier and cheaper if you wanted the lowest cost option with budget parts to handle 40's, but that also depends on what you're looking for in the outcome and how you do it. In this particular instance, it's pretty obvious to folks who've done this that this builder is not trying to build this for low cost.

The parts choice are high end parts and the cost is going to be on the high end for an SAS. A lower cost build would save money by using junk yard axles. It's probably around $10k difference to go with new custom axles like this. But you also get new custom axles! As I understand it the goal is to retain all the OEM functionality of the electronics like crawl and Atrac. To do that takes a lot more attention to detail and adds more cost for custom axles and such.

Hey guys! Haven't forgot about the thread we've been very busy at the shop.. We have made some progress on "T40R"! I should have some new pictures to share tomorrow!!
