T4rchadly's "RADRNR" build thread (IFS wannabe rock crawler on 37s)

What do you think of the KYB LC shocks? My bilstiens are clapped and those seem like a good cheap(er) option before going to Radflo/King style rebuildable shocks.

i dont have a radical amount of time on them like the tokicos, but so far its a very quality and cheaper option as of right now im pretty happy with them for being i think like $30 each for them if that?? im trying to stay with a cheaper shock because id really like to get onto a 14" coilover setup for better adjustability. id say get em. i got them off of rock auto for a 1991 fj80

with that being said, someone buy my outboard shock relocation kit from freel good performance from me id like $350. as said, im. trying to go to a coilover setup later on.

What links/axle do you plan on pairing with those coilovers out of curiosity? 4wheelundergrounds rear coilover bracket kit looks pretty sweet if you haven’t seen it already.

my good friend has 4WU kit, i plan on making my own links, my own mounts, and measure the exact link mounting location as my friend so its the same geometry. it probably wont be this winter like i wanted. i really want to get this 1uz swap done first. between balancing skiing costs, long distance camping trips, and having two vehicles that i like to put money into it probably wont happen as soon as id like it to. the 4runner is very capable as is so im willing to wait for awhile

Nice. You think the tokicos are better? Seems like I've seen alot fail on here. On another note, I'm moving to SLC for college soon, looks like I'll need some sort of undercoat? I'm from AZ so rust scares me lmao

ive broken 3 tokicos just from how hard i drive this thing, but they are cheap so i kept using them. i wanted to explore different ride feel as the tokicos were really stiff and probably better suited for a rear rear setup..

for undercoat i personally used "fuid film" and WD40.i used fluid film asa base coat and wd40 on top so its washable and isnt constantly oily. just know itll instantly turn dusty when you go out to moab or little sahara for example. i washed my 4runner twice a week at my shop the whole winter so that helped as well. i need to figure out a gameplan with my tacoma for how low it is now

small updates

since the last post about hitting the deer, the next drive my alternator self detonated, breaking the timing cover, fan clutch, radiator, electrical, & 2 belts... the truck ended up sitting nearly the entire summer up until about mid september where i gained motivation again to work on it again. new CS144 alternator and said parts, everything's working as should.. until the water pump started leaking.... thus came a new timing belt and waterpump/ thermostat. used OEM pump/stat and a gates belt.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/181664286@N04/51632468943/in/dateposted-public/" title="PXL_20211016_233658364"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51632468943_6d93c201f8_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="PXL_20211016_233658364"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

next up was i was tired of all my tools and camp utensils flying everywhere inside my drawers so i glued yoga matting that we use on pieces of our vans so it would help. tools are fine id like to make dividers for the camping utensils still. it works for now

lastly i decided i wanted to start bolting my sleeping platform extensions down. ive been having slight trouble with them getting out of the pins when doing heavier wheeling. i drilled a hole with supplied drill bit and installed this helicoil inside of the wood so i can easily bolt and unbolt the platforms. absolutely no issues yet and secured with a button-head t30 bit so i can still sleep with comfort

moab rock therapy 2022

i decided it was time to bring the 4runner out for some testing before rock therapy so i took my co worker down to moab for the weekend and hit a few trails. found a few parts that needed attention and fixed as soon as i got back to the shop. man front lockers are rad!:guitar3:

this is my second year of moab rock therapy, and let me tell you. the 4runner is a whole different beast since last time. absolutely love catching up with alex and chase!! i didnt see them too much since the 4runner was broken pretty much the entire summer. most of these pictures are from alex! he took quite a lot of awesome shots over the weeekend

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/51628995199/in/dateposted/" title="9A0A3411"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51628995199_8df6af83a6_b.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="9A0A3411"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

we ended up doing moab rim, steel bender, & cliffhanger. lucy did all without any assist and going up/down all the optional hard lines. i was beyond stoked of how the 4runner was doing.. after constant luck of breaking over 7 CV axles since 35, i didnt break a single thing! alex broke a cv and we put one of my spares in and kept on trucking.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/51629168545/in/dateposted/" title="9A0A4052"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51629168545_15cd997aa1_b.jpg" width="1024" height="640" alt="9A0A4052"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

- fix f/r fender and fit corner lights back in - done
- fix headlights (theyre thrashed from hitting deer, big slams from rok krawling)
- coilover rebuild / revalve
- find out why key wont work in driver side handle - done; good as going to get. needs new lock cylinder
- trailer wiring
- rear upper link bushings
- obtain cruise control again - done
stuff im aware of and doing absolutely nothing about

we'll see how it goes! ended up getting the P/S pump done (i forgot what it feels like to drive it with one hand:party:) along with fixing the headlights and spraying the axle tonight. want it reliable again for the time being while getting ready to take bigger steps with new axles & suspension. it drives amazingly well for road trips id like to obviously have as little down time as possible

What’d you spray the axle with? Just fluid film and wd40 like earlier or? Mine needs it bad too haha

i used some satin black paint+primer rustoleum and then i am going to be coating with fluid film when it stops snowing. i have my garage filled with random stuff currently so 4runner has been sitting outside. waiting for things to clear up to take it to the shop

Cruise control relocation: How to

ive been steady cruising through the to-do list i made a couple weeks ago, ill post more when i have a few more items done but i have HAD it not having cruise control anymore. when i built my ARB compressor bracket utilizing the CC bracket, its been ditched for over a year now and has been agonizing on road trips. i finally put my foot down and began the process of mounting the CC elsewhere.

this will basically be a step to step proccess on how to relocate your cruise control if you had to ditch your cruise control from a turbo setup, compressor, etc.

I needed to mount the CC in a spot where stuff is still easy to service, and ease of bolting on and off whether it be from a custom nut insert setup, or oem location. first thing first was i knew i didnt have enough length on the connector to move it anywhere. I went to the junkyard, and found a 2000 4runner with the body harness still. i unplugged the harness, and cut a big section out thinking i can just cut and splice for an easy extention, that way ill have the OEM wires vs some solid wired that would be hard to diagnose from looking at a FSM. the connectors were different styles but included same color wires in the pack. i assume connector differences are 96-97 & 98-02?

- cut even length around 2-3 inches back of the OEM CC male connector from your 4runner
- splice in extention section you had snagged from junkyard vehicle

-put looming on new "extention harness" to A. appear more proffesional B. more weather resistant. make sure you insert two pieces of heat shrink before you connect wires to properly seal the looming
-leave ends of extention harness out to connect to body harness of your 4runner
-solder/crimp wires from extention to the body harness

alright, now that we've spliced in the harness extension, your connector setup should look like the last photo above. my 4runner is a '96 using the 4 pin setup, yours may be the bigger connector style but perform same process.

next up is creating the bracket.

-we will be taking off the 10mm bolt on the passenger firewall area that is next to the body/engine harness pass thru.
-your engine harness will be connected to a bracket via a tab. remove the bracket and carefully disconnect the harness mount from the tab.
-you will trace the size of the cruise control box, followed by a 1.5" wide X 3" piece on the corner. this is what it will look like for a visual reference. i used .125 (1/8") flatstock steel for this bracket

mark where CC module holes need to be, followed by marking a 1/4" hole in the middle of the 1.5" tab, and 1" upwards. bend similar angles to this picture.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/181664286@N04/51800787638/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0982"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51800787638_b426b1c68d_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_0982"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

lastely, cut an inch off the OEM bracket we unbolted and weld the tab on the front right side looking at the face of the connector. this is to hard-mount the engine harness again. it will look like this.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/181664286@N04/51800787638/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0982"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51800787638_b426b1c68d_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_0982"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/181664286@N04/51800787588/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0979"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51800787588_dbb7fa1078_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_0979"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

- mount and fasten bracket with the10mm bolt and set at approx 20 degree angle to clear the hood
-install CC cable onto throttle body actuator
-install engine harness connector on cut OEM tab we welded to secure

and youre back to having cruise control

ive been making slow & steady progress on the 4runner. my key hasnt been working on my driver side door lock so its been inconvienent. i door the handle apart, and i ended up pencil grinding some of the brass nubs off the lock mechanism. this is the last thing i reccomend but it is obviously more worn than the passenger side form taking it apart. i think im going to try and putting the passenger cylinder lock onto the driver side??

you can see the nub i took off the middle. works every time now so far

i then proceeded to do another set of steering rack bushings. i forgot how much of a pain they are, especially after a full year now of abuse i had this super gnarly clunk i was hoping to get rid of and it is no longer clunking when i turn. the old poly bushing werent SMOKED yet like the last pair i did, but they did show quite a bit of wear.

lastly, this is a project im working on for the 4runner currently, although it wont end up looking exactly like this. it helps you get the idea though

i really dont like black accessories but i decided to take a risk and im really glad with how it looks. ive designed chainsaw mounts, and a few other mounts for the rack that ill be carrying on bigger trips.

headlights are almost done im just waiting on some squadron pro's to come my way to seal the deal. i also have another ARB seal kit coming in so i can go back to having lockers. engine is not doing hot it eats a lot of oil and is starting to make noises

Sure looks good with a Sherpa rack back on it! I'm really curious how your headlights will turn out. Have plenty of questions but maybe you'll post how you did them so I'll save them. Remind me, are you just gonna run the 3.4 until it blows, then swap something in?

yep ill be showing how i did everything with the headlights including the end outcome, beam pattern etc.

im probably going to end up riding this 3.4 until it grenades. i just barely bought a spare block im going to be doing new bearings and rings on along with some ARP studs and MLS head gasket for the turbo setup i want to do. if it blows before this happens, itll just hang tight in the garage for awhile until other engine is done
