Taco CBI Moab on a T4R

Saw that CBI has a DYI kit for their Moab 1.0 front bumper for gen 1 Tacomas. Wondering what fitment problems I might run into mounting to a 3rd gen Runner? Pretty sure they are close, but not quite the same.

Yeah, of course. Just wondering how CBI mounts their setup, and curious if I would even have to change anything. I would guess that since the two are basically the same that the mountings would be the same. Anyone got pics of CBI mounting brackets? And if anyone had done one like this already, that would be cool.

DIY is less than half of an assembled unit, and shipping would probably be better. ....And its easier to hide from my wife....:gossip:


4Runner frames are longer than taco frames? right? or is it just the cap on the end that needs to be removed?

No clue on the actual answer, but looking at what guys with the ARB have to do may have some insight as to what you'd need for the CBI kit, I believe the ARB that 3rd gen guys use is actually for a 1st gen Taco.
 
The front of the Tacoma frame is different, but not by much. As mentioned above, you should be able to do the "ARB frame cut" which is very simple and be able to use the CBI. This is a BIG should, but doing a quick google image search it seems reasonable to do.
 
Gotcha, and thanks for the replies guys.

I have looked at the mod to run the Taco ARB, and it looks really doable, especially since like was mentioned this is DIY.

I'm still a bit confused about what the differences are in the frames.

Nathan at CBI said that it would fit dimensionally, but mounting would be different. This I already assumed. Still curious as to what's different and how big of a deal it is?
 
As stated above the mounting points on the front of the Tacoma are difference. They're not different by much though, and isn't difficult to adapt it. I'm going to be doing to same thing but with a different brand. AllPro has a 1st Gen Tacoma bumper that I plan on altering to fit.
 
Tacoma frames are shorter. ARB supplies a frame extender bracket with their bumpers for use on the Tacoma. On our 4runners we just cut the stock bumper mount from the frame and slap the ARB on. No extender necessary.

If CBI does something similar you should be able to put the bumper on easily. But if it mounts to the Tacoma frame in its original length you may have to cut 3" or so off your frame. Or modify the mounting brackets. Either way it shouldn't be a big deal if you have basic fab skills

Modding the mounts, or even building new ones shouldn't be a problem. More than anything i was just curious what I would have to do.
 
For those who are curious

I just heard back from Nathan at CBI, who has been super helpful and informative by the way.

Apparently the mounting is very different for the way they mount the Tacoma Bumper. I guess i would need to fabricate mounts that fit the 4Runner, and then fit the bumper onto my own mounts. He said that frame holes are located differently too.

I am a little confused by this, since guys are bolting up Taco ARBs with the same holes (Is that right?) I guess I was just assuming that I would have to shorten the frame to fit into the Tacoma mounts, since all the info I have seen says the 4Runner frame is just longer than the Taco, but holes for tow hooks etc, are still basically the same.

Pics of the CBI mounts would help I think.

The two tow hook bolts, and then a vertical bolt through the frame and also one through the end of the frame (this ones optional, but recommended for winching)

heres a picture of the vertical bolt and endcap bolt, the two tow hook bolts are self explanatory

Reviving this old thread.

I was giving some thought to trying CBIs DIY 1st gen Tacoma Moab 1.0 bumper on my 3rd gen T4R and I came across this thread. I like the lines of the Moab 1.0 over the hybrid they have for the T4R.

I figured I could brush up on my fab skills and save some coin at the same time.

Red October do this? Anyone else try it?
 
Doing this today... Will report back with finished results.

To start with though, you definitely have to cut back more than the ARB cut(2 7/8") and the frame horns for side mounting aren't the same, there's more distance between holes on the 4runner and they are about .5" lower on the frame... Oh.... And the ac condenser isn't gonna fit... Either gonna have to cut a hefty slot outta the frame mounted crossmember for it, or gonna have to swap out for Tacoma components... Probably going Tacoma here...
 
I never did this since I could never quite figure out how CBI mounted their bumper. But I did end up using a trail gear taco bumper mount to base my home built bumper on, I just had to cut my frame horns back a bit.

I am still interested to see this done tho.

The quick answer is, Yes. I did it. Successfully.
