Tacoma Suspension Swap

shocks dont lift the 4runners, coils do. the 5100 in the rear will not doing anything for you as far as lift goes. OME makes a 10mm (~3/8") trim packer that you can slide in there if you want more lift. most likely what will happen is your driver side will sag almost 1" versus your pass side, so you would run a daystar 1.5" spacer on the driver side and everything will be where you want it (thats exactly what i did!)

also, did you get the TRD sport (linear) or TRD offroad (progressive) coils? if you move the coil bucket up a notch on the progressive coils, you will just be compressing the soft part of the coil and not be preloading the springs as much as you would with the linear springs. just something to note if you didnt already know.

Thanks

I bought new trd off road progressive coils for the 5100s. They are driver/pass specific so im hoping there wont be any resulting lean, but we'll see. Ive used the OME trim packs b4 on my 3rd gen and just bought some for the 4th gen for the rear FJ 4x4 coils.

Got my TRD swap done, finally! I think it looks pretty good, just need some tires now....

Question to everyone before I tackle this swap. I have a set of fj bilsteins incoming in great shape, I plan on throwing the shocks on the rear and getting fj springs at a later date.
My question is, should I grab a set of like new trd sport coilovers for the front and sell the fj struts? Or just pick up a set of trd off road coils to put on the fj bilsteins?
I'm trying to save money where possible, and being safe and having someone assemble the fj and trd coils would pretty much be the same cost as picking up the trd sport coilovers.
Any advice.

Question

Another question hopefully someone can help me with:
Thanks to all the great threads, I successfully installed rear fj bilsteins today as well as replaced the passenger end link bushings (driver bolt stripped unfortunately). It was an all day affair with lots of disbelief and trips all over before I bought a Sawzall and hacked the stocks out.
Front tacoma suspension is next, and my simple question is: if I buy the front suspension assembled and ready to go, will I need to disassemble the setup (top plate, etc) to install with the no compressor method?

I'm still weighing buying the complete setup vs the coils and kyb mounting kit to add to the fj bilsteins I have.

Any advice would be appreciated, I use 46runner's awesome write ups when possible

And since I'm really new to all of this I'm not sure how a completed coilover would be installed since it appears the top plate mount also goes above the frame mount.

Thats your alignment..

After about a week of driving, I've noticed that the ride is actually "floaty" and less firm than my XREAS was. Granted, my XREAS system wasn't dead yet, but I figured from what everyone was saying in this thread that it would at least somewhat as firm as the XREAS.

Does that sound off? Anyone else have similar experiences?

and lack of caster/camber adjust ability due to the lift...

Here's my after pic. This is how it should have came from the factory. I took it on some swamped out forest roads last weekend and the ride was awesome. Truck is loaded with camping gear in this shot.

That looks incredible. What size tires are those? Any rubbing?

Thanks, they're just 265/70/17. Had some minor rubbing. I removed the front mud flaps but not sure if that was even necessary. It was definitely rubbing on the front of the fender liners, pushed them forward/in about 1.5-2" and there's no rubbing at all now.

Swapping bushings on rear shocks, 5 min job

Used 19mm and 27mm socket (I didn't have 26mm but 27mm works OK)

The ES bushings don't appear to be 100% symmetrical, is this on purpose and does it matter?
Did these work mine seem like they're wonkie. The bushing isn't as long as the shaft shock mount. Is there something else your supposed to put on the shaft with the bushing?

live action!!

Do you have anything past the Taco springs and FJ rears? Spacers?

I encountered this and didn't add anything else. It's been totally fine.

No spacers or anything. Just the Taco/FJ springs and Taco shocks.
Hmm. I do like that look. I bought the same spring setup, but I'll have Bilstein 5100s all around instead. I'm installing it Saturday, and I wanted to put it on the .85 setting. It seems like it'll for sure make the front higher than the rear. Might need spacers for the back.

Yeah if I had to guess you'd be ever so slightly higher up front. I have some positive rake right now (which I wanted), so I suppose there's a chance you'd come out level. Plus you have more weight up front with the V8. Tough call.

Yeah, I'm hoping the V8 brings the front down just a tad and I don't get the full 1-1.5" that the TRD springs supposedly give. I think I'll have to just do it and see where it sits afterwards and adjust accordingly.

FWIW my springs added 1.75"-2" up front. But my old springs had 160K miles, so there's that.
