Tailgate window doesn't roll down anymore.

Hello everyone,

another thread on that topic.
I have almost read them all and not finding the solution, I have decided to create this one.
Everything was working the right way, able to roll it down and up, able to open the tailgate, etc..
But one of the 2 rolls holding the window has to be reattached.
The best to do that was to completely remove it from the tailgate and try with success to reposition it (window in the 2 vertical tracks and with the rolls in place).
Since that, I am not able to roll it down, so I cannot close the tailgate...
(I have bypassed the lock allowing me to roll it down and up once open.
The window motor is okay (tested directly with a 12v battery). If it supposed to roll the window down, it is doing the contrary!
Could it be a relay? If so, what a coincidence.
Does an unplugged defroster could also be the cause?
I thought about the back wyper also but it isn't fine.
It must be caused by a stupid detail I don't see.

NB Important detail maybe : this is a 4Runner 1988, 2,.4l 5M.

with mine, i have to set the rear wiper above it's resting spot for my window to work, i figure whatever sensor that controls that function is out of alignment.

Well I have removed the arm and let it do its cycle at least 5 times without any success (I can hear the sensor I guess, a kind of "klang").
I will give it another try tonight with a wise-grip.
But I have read on a lot of 4runner forum that if you power the window engine directly from a 12V battery, it rolls it down and actually, it is doing the contrary.
 
Just unplug the wiring harness for the hardtop, that removes the wiper arm switch from the equation. Window can still go up and down as long as the mounting bolt is installed on the hardtop (second to last on drivers side). All the harness does for the hardtop is power the wiper and provide a power interupt for the window. Window doesnt need it to function.

You sure you have power to the rear window control relay?
Maybe you momentarily shorted or overloaded something to cause circuit breaker to trip? reset with a toothpick.

You did not break wires in flex harness between tailgate and body?

Engine stuck?

Thanks for all your suggestions but none of them worked.
It seems to be a mechanical problem from what I have seen today.
Directly powering the engine from a 12V battery make it move a bit in both ways but it cannot roll down (stuck in roll up position actually).
The tailgate was opened last time I've roll it up so could it be out of range?
There is no manual way to make it move.

Its an electrical motor, so if you can get the motor to move both ways by flipping the power wires from your battery, then it must be a mechanical issue with the window.

My suggestion from here would be to search for the online service manuals for your year, or as close to it as possible, making sure your generation is the same as the generation you're downloading (ie., don't get an '91 manual for an '88 vehicle, its a different gen). Go through the diagnostics section for the rear window mechanism, and if that doesn't get you where you need to be, you'll probably need to remove the gear mechanism and see if its either stripped, jammed or frozen/rusted in place. Re-greasing all the gears, along with a liberal dose of penetrating fluid (I personally like either Liquid Wrench or MP80-2 from MotorPurr) on anything that rubs, moves, slides or meshes may break it free, but until you tear it down, there's really no way to tell what's happening if you've already tried the other recommendations. Rad's link should help you with the wiring side, as well as the handles and locks, but if you're doing this manually with just a battery and two wires directly to the motor, you should see that window moving.
 
bumping this thread because i don't want to start a new one for the problem i am now having.

I ordered a softopper and during my install it started raining, so i put the soft top on without the framing to cover my seats/bed. to avoid water pooling on the top i rolled the rear window up to prop up the top. an our later i resumed my assembly. but when i went to roll the rear window down it would not move. the window is leaning forward a considerable amount toward the interior of the truck. i have tried holding it in several different positions while trying to roll it down. this has not worked. i also tried to reset the breaker with a tooth pick. no luck. could rolling it up too far stop it from working? has anyone had this happen to them?
