Tailpipe

What are guys doing for rerouting the tailpipe after the muffler? Most notably the factory location where it finishes underneath the right rear quartrpanel. Mine keeps getting damaged when coming off rocks and I want to route it in a less vulnerable location. Surprisingly search results don't show much.

I was tempted to post something along the lines of "help me piece together the ultimate 3rd Gen exhaust" but your post is a great starting point. After nearly 19 years the muffler's pretty beat, and now that I've spent way too much time I didn't have reading all of the exhaust comparisons it seems like there are two real options: 1.) Replace jut the muffler, in which case welding in the 2.5" Borla XR-1 may be the best sounding/performing/best made option and the factory side-exit exhaust tip is maintained, or 2.) Replace the whole cat-back setup with the Borla Pro system (with similar side-exit exhaust location)

Does anyone know of either a better setup or have any advice (I've read too many threads on this now)?

Tailpipe RELOCATION

The point of my post was to inquire about rerouting and relocating the factory tip location. Not about mufflers and not about having the tip finish in the original location. I want it out of the way of rock damage and in a protected area.

You can cut it shorter, but you risk dumping exhaust into your cabin if you cut it too short. I see 4th Gen guys complaining about the straight out design, and their fix is often to switch to a side-exit style. I'm not sure what you can do to solve the problem without either introducing dangerous fumes into the cabin unless you get supercar-esque and go through the rear bumper or get Roadkill on it and do some hater-pipes straight through the hood (please, please do this).
