Talk Me INTO it or NOT into it. 285 from 265

If you run into remote puncture prone areas, consider the size of tires that your friends run. 2+ spares are better than just 1.

Carrying a full size spare is important to me… Some people will have a hell of a time trying to fit larger stuff into the stock areas… my 32” is already pretty tight, but it fits.

You make a really good point, even standardization with friends you wheel with is a huge benefit.

What are you using the truck for?

If you wheel, my recommendation would be to look at a 255... it's become my preferred size over the years.

People call them skinny buy I don't feel like they are... they work well and weigh less with the thought being smaller contact patch = more PSI on the available contact patch = more grip.

These trucks already feel like slugs and the bigger fatter tires in larger diameters only make it worse… and without gearing it’s starts to get a bit annoying.

I lined up the 285/70-17 side by side with a 255/75-17, to see the height/width differences. I am using a 255/75-17 to fit in the spare tire location in lieu of a 285. Height difference is minimal...:bored:

Why not have looks as a factor in your decision, do whatever makes you happiest.

285s were easy for me to fit with -12mm offset wheels. No BMC needed. Remove front mudflaps and trim/move a little plastic

You can only change the shape of your contact patch, the overall area should remain the same. It is only a function of weight and tire psi.

Seems like there isnt too much love for the 275s. They've always seemed like a happy compromise between 265s and 285s.

I'm running about a 2.75 inch lift up front with new LCAs

You could also go with a 255/80/17 which is just as tall, if not a hair taller, than a 285, without the extra width and they are a little lighter. Only lost 1 mpg going to a 255/80 ST Maxx from a 265/70 KO2. Had to trim just a hair to get them to fit but to me it was worth it.

I’m thinking about going with a 255/75 17 but concerned about how much they will protect a 7.5” wide wheel. Thoughts?

I ran KO 265/70s for 100k miles, have 60k miles on my KO2 275/70s and plan on going with 285s next spring. You guessed it....KO2s. Can’t decide if I want to go with 285/70 or 285/75.

These are 275s on my truck.

Great looking truck!

Do you have the V8 with tow package? I stayed with 265’s because the 285 wouldn’t fit in spare tire location. Did the 275 fit in spare tire slot and is the E rating on that tire too much?

Staying on topic-
These are a few of my 04 V8 with 265/70/17 BFGATKO2’s.

KO2’s rock and here are 6 reasons 265/70/17 are just fine?

No issues when wheeling
Better fuel mileage
Tows better
Better acceleration
No trimming required
Spare tire is same size! (Needed for full time 4WD)

My 255/80's protect the wheel OK. I've still managed to scrape the face of the wheels a few times in the rocks. I can still air down to 15 without any issues as well. That being said, I wouldn't put these 255's on anything wider. If I stay with 255's for the next tires, I may go with a 7" wide wheel (TRD Pro).

And yes, fender mining trimming necessary. That wasn’t hard. But, I can definitely say, for me, I’m putting a body mount chop on my list. If was just running around town, carefully, all the time... no worries. But, I want to be able to flex a lil off road and drive my vehicle with less worry around turns on road.

So what is your opinion of them? Good, Bad, Ugly?

Absolutely LOVE the look.

The 285’s do make my drivetrain a little irritated with me.

Gas mileage took a dump, but hard to quantify that number with the 265 to 285 math.

I love them, but if I was advising a friend, I’d say go for 275s. For casual upgraders, I’d say just stick with 265s.

I'm teetering between 275s or 255s.

Love the wheels btw. So fresh

Love the look of the 255. What is the mpg drop between a 285 and 255 using the same tire? Is the 285 really that much worse?
