Talk me out of Cooper Discoverer AT3??

FWIW I went through this same dilemma last fall. I’ve got a 3” lift and I wanted 285’s, but realized I couldn’t fit the spare in the spare location. 275 was a “maybe”, but I didn’t want to run an E rated tire either. For the 1/4” ground clearance gained going from 265/70/17 to the 275/70/17 (31.5 to 32) I said screw it and went with the BFGATKO2’s in a 265/70/17 and never looked back.

I also can confirm there is no conflict on fender, no conflict on UCA, no conflict on body mount, no spare tire stowing conflict, and less speedo variation from 260/70/17 (stock on my 04). I also realized I would have marginally better MPG, better acceleration, and it would be better to tow my 5000lb TT.

Yes, I did decide to go with the AT3 (thanks for the input) and ordered them on ebay last night with 100 savings code...all in $696. Then they emailed me today that they are out of stock until Friday so they will be delayed by about a week, so I called them and complained a little (alignment was setup for this Saturday and now Im gonna have to reschedule) and got them to also give me a $100 discount for the delay, new price $596. They are almost disposable at this point if I dont like them or KO2 comes with a Load C 275/70/17, I'm good!

Tirecrawler.com set of 4 AT3 in stock size were $569.32 Free delivery to local Allen Tire for install. $25 per tire to mount and balance.

Product Name Quantity Each Ext.
265/70R17 115T Cooper Discoverer AT3 - 90000002701 4 127.80 511.20
Subtotal: $511.20
Sales Tax: $51.12
California Tire Recycling Fee $7.00
Grand Total: $569.32

Then they e-mailed saying that my order did not pick up the $50 rebate, which they credited to my credit card. So it was really $519.32 before mounting and balance.

Can't beat that deal.

I've also run both. Actually I've run Nitto G2s, Cooper ATPs and AT3s, Michelin ATs, and KO2s.

Out of all of them the KO2s have been the best tire from summer road trips to winter trail rides - rain, snow, hot/dry. Mine have probably 30k+ miles and look basically brand new and are as smooth and quiet at Michelin LTXs.

Mine are stock size, C-Load, and I keep them around 38psi. My only real gripe is that they're kind of a gaudy tire and I wish they would make this size with black walls on both sides. With a 4Runner, even stock height, you get to see the white letters regardless of if they are in or out.

It's just paint, take some acetone and a rag and wipe the paint off.

Pretty sure that's not true. Lots of hot rod guys use sandpaper when cleaning the white letters of BFGs because it takes off the nasty stuff and reveals the fresh white rubber below.

Have you ever seen a set of white letter out tires that have been curb scrubbed so bad that the underlying white rubber is showing all the way around the tire like a white wall?

^^ except stock size for the 4th Gen 17's are 265/65

Doesn't matter, 265/70 fits fine on stock rims.

I will also throw in my two cents about the AT3s. Kickass tires man. Best tire I've ever experienced in the rain, so much goddamn grip. I love driving in the rain. Sand/loose dirt was also fantastic. Otherwise, offroading is kinda meh (like on smooth rock). Snow was okay, pavement is fine and quiet, no different from any regular tires.

If you want something that looks more aggressive, try the ATPs.

Sorry, I have a 5th gen and those are the stock tire size. I guess the real point is that was the cheapest deal I found.

I just went with these in 285/70/17 and called it a day. :thumb:

Ok, so I ordered the AT3's

I did not see enough to talk me out of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 and I ended up getting them in 275/70/17. Now, for anyone that has them, can you put some pics into this thread? The other threads with 300-400 pages is too much to compile the few pics of trucks with these tires.

I finished my lift and when I drove to the dealer for alignment it drove like stilts wearing roller skates. I hope a bad alignment can have that type of effect on the drive. Wheels were whirling at over 40mph, bumps in the road were basically tossing me sideways, etc... It was not a fun 15 mile drive let me tell you.

To refresh:
Front 5100/885 (with 1/4" spacer on drivers side and 5100 set at .85)
Rear Icon2/Icon2
New SPC UCAs
New Aftermarket LCAs
New Lower Ball Joints and LCA brackets
New Cam hardware
New CV Axles
New End Links
New Outer Tie Rods

Looks to be about 3" lift (still settling).

If ANYONE has the Discoverer AT3 in 275/70/17 with a comparable 2.5 - 3" life please share a picture in this thread. I have added in 1 picture of my truck with stock tires post lift.

I REALLY want to see similar lifts with the mentioned tire size in AT3.

Did you assemble the front strut yourself? How difficult was it with the .85 setting?

I have a close setup. Bilstein 5100s/885/Superflex HDs with 265/70/17 AT3s. But my rear is definitely way higher right now. The rear should still settle a bit (still fairly new), but I also have a lot of weight up front and I need to bump it up.

I like the level on yours. But I know it'll 100% make me require UCAs, and I need to replace my LCAs too. I probably should do it anyways.

Surprised you did the OME 885 + spacer + .85 setting, that's really high, maybe that's what caused all the issues when driving? Any chance you can take measurements, I'm interested to know how much rake that is, it's hard to tell. I was looking at the exact same setup, but contemplating Icon vs Toytec rear springs.

Just put these 275 70 R17s on. Toytec/bilstein suspension.

Would you guys put the Hankook Dynapro ATM in this group as well?

I'm new to the forum even though I have been watching from the sidelines for a while now. I finally built up the courage to make it official.

I have the Hankook Dynapro ATM tires on my 2007 sr5 4runner and I will never buy another type of tire for my 4runner. My goal was to not have two sets of tires, snow and 3 season, after much research I found a YouTube video a gentleman had a 4runner and raved about these tires so I decided to give them a shot, I immediately sold my extra set of snow tires and wheels.

Only drawback, I lost 1.5 MPG, however in the grand scheme of things, not a big loss for me as I don't have to think about extra wheels or tires.

I got the spring/shock (strut) already assembled and already at .85 from another forum member and I was not interested in trying to get it to the lower setting on my own. I only did the 1/4" spacer on the drivers side for the drivers side lean and not for any more lift. I do like that there is very little rake, but dont have front measurements yet as I took it for alignment pretty much the day I finished the suspension work. I will measure when I get back. As for the rear, I did measure that with Icon2 and 2" Icon springs:

Ground to Fender
RR Before 36
RR After 39.25
RF Before 33.25
RF After

LR Before 35.25
LR After 38.5
LF Before 33
LF After

Middle of Wheel to Fender (these may not be precise)
RR Before 21.5
RR After 24.5
RF Before 18.75
RF AFter

LR Before 21
LR After 24
LF Before 18,25
LF After

I'm guessing I probably had .50 - 1.0" sag with 12yr old suspension and got about a 2" lift from the icon2 in the rear (which is what its supposed to be)

As for the front, the spring rate for the 885's is equivalent to the stock spring rate (within 2%) and a little less than 2" taller than the v8 t4r springs. I have a v6 and probably would have selected the 884 if I was assembling from scratch but for a good deal, the 885s were fine. They have the same spring rate as the 884, just .39" taller. My guess is the front will settle at about 2.5-3" lift once it settles and I will update this thread with those measurements, hopefully by next week. As you can see from the above, I had about a 2.5" rake with my before measurements so I could have definitely afforded some extra lift in the front.

Not sure if this is worth a build thread eventually or not...I guess Ill wait and see how it turns out and what else I do.

wow, that looks exactly like my rig. Do you think you could have fit 285's with that lift or would it have been major trimming and BMC? Did you do measurements before/after? I was hoping for a little bit fuller wheel well with the 275's...

I bought the vehicle like this. So I don’t have before and after measurements. I agree the wheel well doesn’t look very filled out. Not sure on 285s. I was more fearful of the vehicle being sluggish going up another tire size and wasn’t going to regear.

Nice I'm definitely interested to see what your fronts came out to ground to fender once everything is all said and done.
