talked to Bilstein today...new 5100 shock info

Damn...I wish this was around last summer! I had the Tundra 5100s for a few years, and now I have the Tacoma 5100s, and it's a world of a difference. I'm very curious how the 4Runner specific ones are!

Oh, and just a heads-up for those touting the Tundra 5100s; mine leaked after a few years but I couldn't warranty them since it's an unapproved application (Tundra shocks on a 4runner, and the Eibach springs).

Plus, honestly, the ride quality was way too harsh with E-rated tires and Eibach springs. That's a personal taste, but it's not an uncommon one.

Chas, just curious if you've seen the ride height with the Eibach springs and the 5100s for the 4Runner? Also, what would happen if I went from the 5125 (bought when I bought the Tundra 5100s) with OME 890 springs in the rear?

Honestly, I'd love to lower from the 3" that I have since it's hell on everything that interacts with the suspension, especially if it's an application that would be warrantied for "life". Last summer I was hoping that the Tacoma 5100s would get me just a little lower, but they haven't really. I know it's the spring that really dictates the ride height, but it was a off-chance hope.

I already have OME 906's in the rear and I'm considering putting these new 4runner specific 5100's in the front with OME 880's. Any reason why not to do this combo?

Also, wheelers off road offers to install the struts on the springs which includes new top plates, stem cushions and washers for 100 bucks for the pair? Is it worth if you do have access to a spring compressor? Is there any reason why you would want new top plates ect?

Thoughts?

I have not seen them equipped with Eibach springs. They should ride slightly softer than the Tundra shocks for sure. In the rear, I would keep the 5125 you have now unless you need new shocks. The 5100 rear shocks for the 3rd gen is good for 2"

That combo works, if you are going to add a front bumper or winch go with the 881s.

Some of the local auto shops out here offer assembly for $50 if you bring them the stock shocks / springs and new shocks. No reason to replace the top mounts unless yours are worn out. 95% of the time we use the ones that are already on the car.

Anyone know off hand if the tundra 5100's will give me 2.5 - 3" lift. I've got ome 881 springs. I'm getting some sag on the springs and my new 285's are rubbing.

I've put the 5100/881 on another 3rd gen I have in Costa Rica but that truck has only 265's on it. I can't remember what groove I put the perch on.

Thanks in advance.

All my parts are in. 4Runner specific Bilstein 5100s and OME 880. I'm having trouble finding which perch to set the spring catch on. Looking at the directions at 0 you maintain stock height so with these coils being 1.5 inch lift coils would 0 net me the lift I'm after?

At the "0" setting you will get the 1.5" of lift that the 880 will give. Moving the circlip higher will give you more than 1.5" etc, etc... Show us pics when done!!

I'll be about 2.3 inches in the rear with the 906s and the 10mm trim packers. Maybe I should do the second notch to make it level? Or keep the front end happy and go with the first notch and live with a little rake.

Pictures will def come! As well as a review. Just waiting on the top shock bushing and washer, I never received them with the 5100s.

Lift is finally installed! It is a huge difference and a new feeling truck.
What was replaced: stock front 99 talls that had 221,000 miles. Rear was OME 60028 "comfort" shocks with 906 springs. I installed these a few years ago before pulling a trailer from Phx to Seattle and back. This set up was great for towing or with weight in the back, but everyday use it was really stiff.

The New: after reading this post and researching I decided Bilsteins were the way to go for my needs and budget. I mostly do back roads/forest roads and use it as a daily/camp vehicle. So I contacted Chas at MRT and he sent me the parts list. I went with the 5100s that are valued for the 4Runner which are probably more forgiving than the Tundra ones most people choose. Went with OME 880s up front and kept the OME 906 in the rear but added a 10mm trim packer to help keep the spring in place.

Reaction: it rides way smoother. This is the ride I've been longing for. Glides over bumps, soaks up dips, and handles great. I can't wait to get this thing on some dirt. Yesterday when just the rears were on I hit a quick rocky road and compared to before I barley felt a thing.

Very happy with the upgrade and highly recommend MRT.

Nice, I'm installing the same combo this weekend. Any pics of the truck from the side?

What perch did you set the fronts on?

I am confused to what I'm running on mine now. I have Front 24-188265 5100's with OME 883 springs. fits perfect and rides good for me.

Wasn't sure if they were the tundra ones because I keep reading that you have to change the bushings to use the tundra 5100. Have even read that the ome springs do not fit the tundra 5100's. As far as being stiff its not bad at all for what I use it for.

Of topic. I know tundra 5100 rear shocks have different size eye hole then the 4Runner 5100 eye. Something like 3/4 and the other is 1/2?

Your part# show for tundra/sequoia. I said they will be stiff in comparison to say 4runner specific shocks and running say 880-882 coils. Unless you have added 500lb front weight.

I went with the lowest perch. Pared with the 880s you get 1.5 inches lift. No side pictures and my fiancé just took it out of town for the weekend. I only got to drive it one day with the new suspension lol!

When she gets back on Monday I'll post a side pic and measurements. All I know is at 6'3" it feels great to be able to stand under the rear tailgate when it's one without ducking down!
