talked to Bilstein today...new 5100 shock info

I went with the lowest perch. Pared with the 880s you get 1.5 inches lift. No side pictures and my fiancé just took it out of town for the weekend. I only got to drive it one day with the new suspension lol!

When she gets back on Monday I'll post a side pic and measurements. All I know is at 6'3" it feels great to be able to stand under the rear tailgate when it's one without ducking down!

I am running the 3rd gen 5100s up front with 99 tall coils. I also have the 906 setup in the rear. I am interested what your side profile with measurements is because I have very worn 99 talls up front and might replace with 880s. My hub to fender on my 02 with ltd flares is 22" front and back. Mind measuring yours up whenever you go to take that side profile pic? Ride quality is most important to me but I also would prefer if my front went down 1/2" to and 1" so I have a slight rake. I prefer this for looks and hauling.

Lift: Front are Bilstein 5100s set to Perch 0 (lowest perch) with OME 880s. New top hat hardware.
Rear is Bilstein 5100 with OME 906s with a 10mm OME spacer.

My truck measurements from the center hub to the bottom of the fender.
Driver Front: 22in Passanger Front: 21.75in
Driver Rear: 22.25in Passanger Rear: 22in

*My OME 906s have been installed since 2013 so they have settled in that time.

**These are the 4Runner Specific 5100s talked about in this thread ordered from MRT Motorsports. I highly suggest ordering from them. Chas knows exactly what he's doing to match what YOU are looking for out of your 4Runner.

Anyone know the difference between the 4Runner and Tacoma 5100s? I have the Tacoma 5100s, but I've always felt that they are too stiff. Are the 4Runner 5100s valved differently? They say they're specific to the 3rd gen so that must be the valving or compression

So it sounds like if I choose to go with 890s over 906s that I need to do something differently for rear shocks. Is anyone running these shocks with 890s and can tell me how it rides?

If these aren't the route I should go, which shock would be the best option to pair with them?

Which isolator?

Anyone know if this is with the Energy Suspension coil isolators up front? Being .75" would add approximately 1.5" additional lift to the 880's even with the 5100's at the bottom notch wouldn't it?
Thanks in advance.

They ALWAYS should, but sometimes boxes get opened, parts fall out etc. Call Bilstein at 858-386-5900 and they will get the proper stuff out to you.

I realize this is old...so for all Bilstein shocks or just the 4600? They could give a flying flip when I called them trying to find the "missing" parts" I was told they don't provide them and it was up to me to find them. Offered absolutely no help. Needless to say I have nothing good to say a about their service and lack of providing expected parts.

Great info here!

Has anyone tried all 3 5100's up front? (i.e. Tacoma, Tundra and the newish 3rd gen 4runner) to see how they compare in ride?

The front of the tacoma is the same as 4runner so I don't see how some people find the tacoma shocks to ride too soft

Has anyone ordered anything from MRT or spoke with Chas in the last 2 weeks? I ordered a bunch of stuff from him on the 24th of May and received everything but the rear shocks. Nobody has returned my calls or emails in over 3 weeks trying to track things down. They close up shop?

I used 4600s on the front of mine with 99' tall coils. The 4600 for the front only came with the top nut and the ring at the bottom to hold the coil, no bushings or washers.

I ended up buying this bushing & washer set (BK9602): Front shock replacement bushing/washer kit

And I also bought this top plate (Monroe 904900): Suspension Strut Mount-Strut-Mate Strut Mounting Kit Front MONROE 904900

It is really annoying that I had to spend an extra $20 on the bushing & washer set. I heard the 5100 fronts come with those.

For the Monroe top plate, I bought that so I could have the struts assembled off the truck without having to bring it into the shop.

That Monroe top plate has an integrated bottom bushing, so the shop didn't need to use the bottom bushing from the Toytec kit. This did cause some confusion for them initially though.

I checked his account earlier this morning. Looks like he hasn't logged on since the 9th.

This is incorrect. The 4runner 5100's do not come with bushings for the front shocks, only the rear is complete....You do get a new lock nut and I believe washers...sad, I just did two sets a few months ago and can't remember.

If I don't want to upgrade to a lift *yet* could I set the shocks at the 0" lift setting with my stock springs and remain at the same height?

Then later in the future if I want a lift I can just change the setting?

yes, with spring perch on the first setting, there will be no lift if the stock springs are used

I have a 1996 with worn out Rancho RS9000 and unknown springs with 265/75. The rear measures 38” from the ground to the fender flare and the front measures 36.5”.

Should I go with the 4th Gen 5100s or the 3rd Gen 5100s since my truck has about 3” of lift?

4th gen.
What's your center-of-hub to bottom-of-fender?

What would be the Bilstein part #? I mentioned in this thread over a year ago that I used 33-187174 and there was almost no uptravel. These are the ONLY ones I find in my research for 5100 4th gen Bilstein shocks. I have 890 springs in the rear and use Tundra 5100s right now. Also barely got the top bushings and washers on as they are considerably thicker. Good thing about them though is that the bottom eyelet didn't have to be modified.

So I am trying to put together my upgraded suspension/lift and I'm looking for some advice. I was originally planning on going with the complete OME kit that Toytec has, but after reading this I'm thinking about ditching the OME shocks and going with 5100s.

I'm planning on going with OME 883s in the front since I will have my shrockworks bumper w/ winch installed and OME 890s in the rear to get me 3" of lift all around.

My understanding from this thread is that the 3rd gen 5100s are only rated for 0"-2" of lift so those would not work. I see that you all have recommended the 4th gens for TOPSECRETTUNDRA, but I was also seeing a lot of people talking about running the Tundras. What is the difference between the 4th gen and Tundra 5100s?

4th gen rear 5100's are a little longer/wider with more travel. You can look up the specs & compare the 2.
