Tap Size Needed

I will be re-tapping my skid plate bolt holes this weekend. I would also like to re-tap the front small cover bolt holes that is under the radiator/bumper. there are 5 bolts and a push pin. It's the cover you take off before taking the skid plate off. does anyone know what size tap I need for those holes? I already know the regular skid is 8x1.25.

I used 6mm-1.00. But...when checking the 6mm-1.00 die on the brand new bolts they’re not as smooth as I’m used to while working with good quality machine bolts. Probably just the finish they use.

Skid Bolts are M10 X 1.25

Re-tapping aint really a thing taps are for cutting new threads. You should use a proper thread chaser/restorer unless the threads are totally wrecked.

Yes this is correct.
The only reason I recommend taps for the skid bolts is because I found them to be really fouled with debris.
Of course YMMV.

Chasing threads is a good job for Harbor Freight taps. That's about all they are good for.

Just dont snap one in there. I need to figure out how to drill out an EZ out I broke in one of the skid bolts a while ago after too many beers and too little patience yay.

Tungsten carbide is your friend, sans the beer this time around. Good luck.

Ok, didn't check back on this thread after someone gave me the bumper cover screw size and I wish I had.

Here is where I landed. I ran ( cheap HF ) dies on each bolt (5) @ M6x1 and and I had (4) new bolts for the main skid. Dies cleaned up the bolts, or maybe they just cut new threads, no idea but i kept on going.

Next, I ran the taps (cheap HF) up through each hole. Wasn't real easy or real hard and shavings were coming out. After each hole, I finger tightened a new bolt up into it to make sure the bolt would go. I thought they felt a bit loose, but kept going.

Here's where I'm not to happy. I could tighten 2 of the skid bolts to what I thought was tight enough, but not they other two. They are stripped again. I also found that the bumper cover bolts were similar.

I want to re-tap all of the holes for new bolts one size up. I looked at some tap and drill charts, but I'm confused. Can someone give me the proper method for finding the next size so I can get the skid solid again. I will buy good taps and a good tap handle as the HF tap handle really sucked.

I'm almost ready to just drive some self tappers in there.

Since you need to be careful with these anyway, I personally would try helicoils first, or maybe these knock-offs...
