Tapping out on Toyota for good

I had a 2002 silverado 5.3v8, and a 2007 silverado 5.3v8. Both had the dreaded “engine clatter” even though I am fanatical with scheduled maintanance and ran mobil 1 in both. I later got a 2014 GMC with the newly designed ecotec 5.3v8. When it began clattering on start up I let it go and bought the 4runner. I have had no issues in 2 years and have actually had more fun in this thing than any vehicle I have ever owned. Previous toyotas? 1983-1990 -pickups, 1996-1999-2009 camrys, and a 2007 tacoma. One of the camrys had issues. Of course we still ran it to over 200,000 miles.

I had a slight knock in the block at 1 month after purchase from a reputable dealer , many comments it was normal sound for a 4.0L engine. I took the oil pan down and she looked like she spent the night at a strip club. The glitter in the pan was overwhelming. I buttoned her up and traded her in.

So no attempt at repair under warranty or otherwise? Drivetrain is 5yr. Did you disclose the issue to the trade-in dealer or just say nothing? I hope you said something or you're just passing the problem on to another person like you, not the dealer. If the dealer chooses to do nothing after you tell them then the dick move is on them.

Same here... thirty years of Toyota and Honda then I made the mistake of going with a domestic product that everyone said was supposed to be just as reliable. That F-150 2.7 Ecoboost was in the shop more than all the vehicles I’ve owned combined. Happily back behind the wheel of a Toyota.

I thought the ecoboost engines were suppose to be awesome? I loved the F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost when I was shopping for a new truck. The interior was very nice as well as spacious!

The 2.7 Ecoboost engine is awesome right off the showroom floor. Very comfortable inside with lots of bells and whistles. It’s fast, mostly fuel efficient and has great low end torque. Run it 20,000 miles and it sounds like a rattletrap old 80’s car. The engine sounded terrible very quickly. Add to that the failed turbos with a two month wait for parts to be in stock and I was done! The electrical system gremlins and odd transmission behavior and noise was the absolute last straw. Great product if you trade in for a new model every two years.

Reliability is 90% of car ownership for me. It can be ugly, uncomfortable, basic and clunky. I prefer that over luxury and features if it stays out of the dealership’s service department.

I'm tapping out. Ive had 3 4Runners, 1 new and 2 used. While I loved them all they have shown me no love in return. I have put up with sloppy steering, old style options such as no auto headlights, expensive parts, expensive upgrades and I maintained them with all the love I could and drove them like a grandma. My latest purchase was a 2016 GEN 5 4Runner SR5, beautiful machine, well cared for with low miles. I’ve put 1.3 million nearly trouble-free miles on 11 Toyotas over the past 37 years. That’s how they earned MY loyalty. And if I would have encountered any trouble with the many used ones I bought, I wouldn’t have pointed the finger at the manufacturer. USED equals no guarantees. PO could have accidentally run the engine briefly with no oil for all you know. Like someone else said, that would be the time to call Toyota on their drive train warranty, rather than pass it along to a future unsuspecting owner. But you’re probably making the best move for you. At this point, it seems that you’re so jaded that you won’t see things objectively. Best wishes with your Chevy.

I was so tempted to try Ford but it looks like they still arent up to par. So far toyota hasnt let me down. 280k on toyota avalon, 200k tacoma, 200k corolla...currently 100k on my DD camry that I only changed brake pads once and regular oil changes (Made in Kentucky Camry is good so far!) Sorry the OP had bad experiences but mine has been the opposite.

I have said this a few times, but I think some people are better off buying a highlander. I convinced my mom of this, she loves my 4runner, but everything she was talking about wanting in a car pointed to a highlander. She bought one and loves it.

I had a ford edge with the eco boost. I do not know if the characteristics are the same for all or not, but that thing was down right a POS in my opinion. It is the only car I ever got rid of due to my concerns over it being unsafe. I also had it in for two recalls (not including the airbag if it was part of the recall) and a repair, all with the first two years of ownership.

The issue was that when you go to smash the throttle, it would hesitate and the RPM would drop to a thousand, then you had to feather it or something to get it to go. This is pretty dangerous to drive like this. I asked three different dealers about this and all of them said it was normal, and part of its fuel saving programming. I dumped that thing before I was really ready financially for my current 4runner.

Another strange thing that happened is the battery went dead. No reason why. It was only a year old car. Ford could not find anything wrong with it. I became highly suspicious of a new car that has the battery go dead with no known reason.

But hey, it had auto headlights, lol.

On my 3rd runner......145k (3rd gen), 135k (5th gen).....had very little issues with either....traded due to laziness on my part, didn’t want to start to replace some major items like exhaust system etc....maybe more like “I want a new one”!!

They are not meant to be luxurious but meant to “go places” where others can’t! My 2018 ORP is the best one so far! Has a nice ride but incredible features, imho

Have a good friend who runs F150/250/350’s in a rugged work environment and they do their own service, but it seems they’d always doing something. Not sure if it’s his they’re treated or what

I inherited a 2006 Explorer. Always need some tidbit of work. Not a good ride, terrible gas mileage, but it was free. Probably trade it on a Jeep just for kicks. Maybe be sorry for that, dunno.

I’m not looking back, love my runners!

If I had the choice I’d not even want that. I can turn on my own lights. Auto wipers is another meh in my opinion.

If you’ve had automatic headlights for several years then buy a 4Runner, it’s a pain to reprogram your brain to go back to manually turning headlights on and off. After never having to think about lights for almost two years with my Ford F-150 I find myself forgetting to turn headlights on at dusk. Not a huge deal, but a bit annoying on a $43,000 purchase. Hell, automatic light sensors have been around for years. No excuse for not having them in a modern car. Still like my Runner better than the POS Ford!

I wish the manufacturers would get together and decide to put them on all cars, or on none of them. Every time I drive at night, I see about a dozen cars with no headlights on. It probably happens everywhere else, but I suspect it happens more often in cities with high levels of tourism, with lots of people in rental cars. Huge pet pieve if mine.

Who are you talking to?

The OP gave up on Toyota and bought a Chevy Silverado not a Ford.

I traded in my POS 2017 Ford F-150 and went back to Toyota (2019 T4R OR to be exact).
