Tech-Stream cable/OBD-ll protocols

Hey team,

I think I know the answer to this but, Question: Is there a Tech-stream cable that will work with my new computer*** O.S. win-10, 64 bit? Or a "work around" in which to support the program to work properly?

I bought two tech-stream cables for my older computer (WIN-7, 64) and installed the "Virtual XP Mode" download but... No dice! So what can be done without spending MAJOR $,$$$... 'Best to you all',

i'm running techstream off my windows 8 32bit... try a 32 bit of any windows version if you have access to it
 
The issue is Win 10 and the hardware drivers. We got a new laptop to run for our drag camaro this year and nothing has worked other than deleting and installing Win 8 for the diagnostic tools. The other issue with that is Win 8 doesn't necessarily support new hardware either. Likely your best bet is looking for a OBD that is supported by Win 10 drivers.
 
If the cable didn’t work with windows 7, good luck getting it to work with windows 10.

I just bought a cable that’s supposed to work with all versions of windows. I’ll be trying it on windows 7 64bit once I get it.
 
You can get VirtualBox, which is free, and if you're ok with reinstalling every 90 days you can get free x86 virtual machines running Win 7 from here.

Hey Cndnmax,

Can you tell me which "Scan-tool" did you order, where from, and how much? I need something to make 'occasional' modifications to our Toyota lighting systems, locks ...etc (my wife has a Camery) so I'm something like her tech lol! Thanks,

This is the one I got, little more expensive but I wanted to be sure I didn’t get a light version of the software. This one supports live data and all. If u already have the cable maybe I can send u the drivers or software, I’d have to look at it when I get it.

Hey if you have a little extra time and a few bucks, you can typically get the same or newer Panasonic Tough Books the TIS uses from municipal, county, or state surplus streams for pretty cheap ~$10-$200. All of our city police and fire use them an rotate out every few years.

...and thank you for your helpful reply! I do have the same translucent cable that you have (mini-VCI j2534) and the cd disc V8.10.034. I'm no software expert but I've got nothing to lose; having bought two techstream cables and was not able to use either of them! At least now I'll try doing a 'Manual install' as you've suggested! Just a warning.. the drivers for the cable are typically flagged as quarantined by most virus scanners. For this reason, I only run it in a virtual machine.
 
I bought a used Techstream Toughbook off EBay...could not read "live data" with the cable they sent and then with the replacement they sent me...They refunded me money but I sucked it up and bought a Mongoose Cable from Drew Technologies...worked great then !!...they told me it was a factory Techstream Lite cable....BULL...it was probably a Chinese knock off !!
 
This is right up in my alley. I do mobile programming.

As stated by rwrobs77, the Drewtech MongoosePro works wonderfully. Toyota dealerships use their cable for OE diagnostics. It's around $500 from their website.

It's better than the cheap knock offs you find online. You'd be able to use the cable for other makes, but with limited functionality due to the different protocols placed by each manufacturer.

Here is what worked for me...Techstream - My Experience

Failing that, I have 2 cables that I know work, I tested them both. I'd be happy to share......

Okay, I think a got some of what's needed: Here's what happened in my effort to install/set-up the program...

I was able to use my old MINI-VCI j2534 OBD-ll cable and disc to load the firmware onto my WIN-10 64 laptop... total surprise (also, the drivers didn't install properly (according to a notification). But I still am encountering another problem... Here it's asking me for a LICENCE KEY (below)



This is the problem that I need to know what to do about; it's asking for a password below but I don't have one...



But I think there's a work-around because I'm having less trouble with this win-10 install/set-up than I was using my old win-7 w/virtual XP Mode app.

My Software vers. is "mvci-x64.reg" and "Techstream_Update _V8.10.
021.exe"

...is there a "Jail-break" procedure to resolve my faults with this set-up?
