TEP w/ KDSS or TRD Pro?

TRDP vs KDSS

While I haven't had the opportunity to test drive a 4R w/ KDSS, I can say that the TRDP is quite streetable. Having owned a '07 Taco, '10 Tundra TRD, and a '14 Tundra TRD, the TRDP definately handles noticeably better than the former. I find the suspension to be quite 'stiff' on the tarmac, and there is MUCH less body roll than my previous trucks. You of course 'feel' every bump in the road, be it because of the Nittos or the stiff suspension, but that isnt an issue for me. I realize this is all subjective, but after you test drive the two, one of them will probably stand out as the one that fits your needs.
I will be interested to see what you decide.

Good luck!

no offense to pro owners but aside from the wheels there is nothing on that truck that warrants anything more than an SR5. Pros suspension? I dont even know why anyone would want that with the plethora of aftermarket options. OP of the 2 vehicles you listed I would go TEP w/KDSS. I personally dont see KDSS as being worth the money either though.

i know it must be hard to imagine that people have different needs/desires than yourself, but -

some people don't want to bother with doing major modifications themselves. some people wouldn't be happy in a bone stock 4runner, but don't want to build gravedigger either. for these people (myself included), the TRDP is a happy medium between stock and a highly modified vehicle and comes with the peace of mind of a fully warrantied OEM vehicle.

Geez I gave a caveat to the post with NO OFFENSE.... I know comprehension is a lost art, but lets give it a shot..... I gave my opinion in response to the OPs question.... if you feel good with what you paid for fancy hard to clean wheels, billy 5100s, terra grapplers and a cool grill than good on you. I was speaking from a FUNCTIONAL standpoint not a "do I look good" one. If I was looking for a best built out of the box rig I would go TE.... but again this is my opinion posted on a public forum about 4runner enthusiasts.... :hello:

May I ask why you think I should keep it?

I was half jokingly stating what I stated; the people I know that have had those cars were genuine fans of the cars, and the couple that got rid of them (for what was dumb reasons, not like a financial crunch or anything) very much regretted later on. I think I just assume you are a big fan of it.

They have not been produced for a while, and while I am not a fan of them, I do admit they are pretty darn unique and do stand out in the crowd, and cannot say anything against their performance.

I have driven a non KDSS 4R and it drove fine. However a small test drive doesn't come close to replicating the hundreds of variants we deal with while owning the car and I feel that owners that have the experience would be the best to suggest.

The reason I'm looking at the 4R is because im a genuine car guy. I've had everything from low 10 sec daily driven cars, drag racing to the mid 8s, to purpose built trail rigs, mostly Jeeps... Where I've done full axle swaps, lockers, long arm suspensions, etc. I love that the 4R is a body on frame with the offroad heritage, I want something that's very capable stock. Because although I don't plan on taking it offroad, one curse of being a car guy is that the bug can bite at anytime. That and i want a lot of functionality and I look at most CUVs like minivans. No thanks.

My main reason for the trdpro is its ready to go with a daily driver friendly setup for miles and years to come. I like that it's different as I've modded all my cars to be different. If it came with KDSS that wouldn't be an issue. However the TEP has KDSS and I've heard so many great things about it that I don't want to overlook a great system for the benefit of some shocks and tires, which can be done myself. But then that's getting the bug - throwing some shocks and then wheels and tires... then a bumper, winch, so forth. I don't want to get down that path as I want to keep it 100% reliable and keep its driving dynamics. Many times have I gone down that path and even though the ride is acceptable, it's not as comfortable, quiet and convenient as it should be due to lifts, offroad tires, height, not going into parking garages, etc. and something will always be an issue.

This is a lot of rambling but I hope it gives an idea of why the 4R and why I'm between these two choices.

Lol, yea, I tried the CUV route because of functionality/practical reasons, thinking that it would be a second car when I get my 4r, I was wrong, I dumped the CUV and just have the 4r. I will just get a sports or classic car for a second car if I desire one. This was the first and last time I went down the road of "practical over desire".

I honestly would not get hung up over the KDSS. I think it is a great system, I have it, but I intend not to do any suspension mods, I think if someone was modding a suspension, they do not need to worry about the KDSS as a modded suspension performs outstanding (I would hope!).

As for the other things, like parking garages, yes, something to be aware of, but I think that is a rare occurrence that if it was an issue, you can easily find a solution at the moment. My own parking garage has a 6'2" height, my 4r just squeezes under the large gas pipe that creates the height limit, I think the Pro would not fit.

Also, I desired the sunroof, my CUV did not have one and I thought it would be alright, it was not, I like having a sunroof, so the premium was a desire for me. But, I think you can install an aftermarket sunroof on the Pro if it was that much of a desire for you.

its ok, there is going to be alot of butthurt from the pro crowd, same thing happened with all the guys that rushed out and bought the call of duty black ops jeep and thought they bought a built rig and all of the sudden felt they could kick down doors and zip tie hadji..... it happens

Thanks to everyone for their input!

I purchased a '15 TEP w/ KDSS yesterday and am loving it!

OP, I was in the same boat as you trying to decide between a TEP and TRDP.

I'm taking delivery of the same truck (2015 TEP) on Thursday.

My reasoning was:

TEP had more of the features I couldn't add (KDSS and Sunroof)

Was cheaper

If I wanted the offroad suspension/tires/rims, I can buy better aftermarket parts and achieve TRDP or better functionality, and it would still be cheaper.

I love my TEP and I've been wondering if I should have held out for the TRDP... although I do love KDSS and the smoother ride, would TRDP be stiffer? Guessing yes....

also kind of wishing I got the charcoal color but they didn't have the TEP in either Nautical blue or Charcoal... ah well I guess silver is fine! :blah:

I haven't seen any of the 2015's on the road... its such a smooth ride.... for you TRDP owners, how is the ride quality on the road and off? Very interested. Although I have Bilstien 5100's on my pathfinder but the ride is very rough although clompliant in sticky situations... :clap2:

This is some feedback.. Just sharing a perspective. And I am not an off road expert. I just take a car from a dealer and drive it in crappy places.

For those of you that found a TEP with KDSS congratulations. I was trying to find one but couldn't. I did trip over a TRD Pro and decided to buy it.

I was originally planning on the KDSS thinking that it would smooth out long (70 to 100 mile) drives on logging roads and I thought it would have better manners driving around.

I originally thought the TRD would be a rough drive on the highway.. But it's really smooth. In fact it's smoother than my beat to crap Honda pilot. It just runs true and smooth and straight and quiet on the highway... And yesterday I took it for its first long drive over crap washed out roads and it the Bilstein shocks made the ride very bearable. It's the moguly, rutty, potholey crappy road with the random runoff stream cutting through it. I have to run this route all the time .. I couldn't tell you which is better.. But the TRD Pro feels pretty good over crap roads and highway.
