Tepui Autana Questions/Comments

I’ve never had or even camped in a RTT before. I have been on the fence for a long time about getting one. I don’t mean to get into the pros/cons of RTT vs ground tents here. I figured I probably would get one, maybe next year. Then outta the blue, on Memorial Day, my wife says “Maybe we should get one of those Tepui tents while they’re on sale.” Omg! Just hours left on sale, and she throws that down, while we are driving to spend the afternoon at my sister’s house... I had not really researched them yet, cause I figured we weren’t going to get one till next year, but I wasn’t going to say no...

Anyway, there are 3 of us, my wife, son, and me, so I pulled the trigger on the Autana 3. Yesterday, after nearly 2 weeks, I finally had a day free to drive down to Santa Cruz and pick it up.

Very stoked! Fight my way through Bay Area traffic home, and finally set it up.

Love it, but... Is this really a 3 person tent? Anyone else have one? Do you camp with 3 people? Having a little bit of buyer’s remorse. Not even sure what their exchange policy is. Also not sure I’d want the XL. That’s even bigger and heavier... I’d probably want a real rack before I got that. Arrrghhh!

I have the CVT Mt Shasta which should be about the same size. We sleep 2 comfortable on top but you can sleep 3 if your 3rd is a child or 2 kids and a adult. Since you have the annex, you can sleep 3 up top and 2 at the bottom, that's what we do with the 5 of us.

Is anyone using an Autana-4 (or equivalent size) tent on the factory side-rails? Just to be clear, I have aftermarket crossbars (Whisbar). Tepui’s website recommends 48” crossbar spacing for their “4-person” tents. The factory side-rails are only 43” long. Do I have to get a new rack to go to the bigger tent?

That’s a big tent for the factory side rails. I have a Frontrunner 3/4 which is 61.4” long and you can see that my Mt. Rainier (same size as the Autana 4) extends about a foot over the end of the rack, or about to the opening of the sunroof. That would be more than adequate size for you, actually perfect for 3. We sleep 4, my wife and I and a 5 and 3 year old, but it can get cozy especially here in Florida. It’s fine if it’s 2 adults and 2 kids bundled in mummy bags. We will likely need to go bigger or sleep in the Annex in the next year or two.
