The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Most common leaks are the hoses coming off the back of the supercharger, especially if you have the 7th injectior connected from a t fitting or something like that. Most likely one is cracked, loose or mis-routed. I once accidentally swapped the fuel and vacuum hoses (oops).

Other than that, only thing left that could leak is at the plenum gasket. If it was new, then not really sure what else might do it.

All my boost t fittings look good. Honestly it scouds like the 'hissing' sound is coming from the charger or the plenum gasket. I installed a new gasket and torqued to ~14 lbs. Is that the correct torque?

Yes. This is a worst-case scenario question, but was the bottom of the supercharger scored or warped at all?

P.S. I installed the throttle body gasket wrong once and though for sure it was the plenum gasket. Was about to tear it down until I did the carb cleaner trick and found the leak.

I did the same exact thing. Had the orientations of the TB gasket incorrect. Man was I happy when I found out that was the only thing wrong.

Ok, stupid question but how are the plenum and trd gasket supposed to be installed? I'm confused on how they can be installed wrong bit maybe mine are. I removed the supercharger and nothing looks scored.

There's nothing that can be installed wrong with the intake gasket unless the rubber seal was torn off.

The TRD throttle body gasket can be rotated and put on wrong.

What about vacuum leaks at the injectors? If you never touched the injectors though, nothing to worry about there.

I just installed an sc on my 4runner like 2 weeks ago. I have no clue to how many miles it has. I changed the s/c oil, replaced the bypass valve and

the trd throttle body gasket. im also running stock plugs everything seems in line im only getting about 5lbs boost completely stock does that sound

right? I thought stock trd sc is supposed to push about 6/7 but that's a nogo for my runner. it seems to run and sounds great. the old sc oil smelt like

shit and was a reddish black color by the way. 2002 4runner 4wd easy install.

I hate the smell of that oil. 5psi of boost is good. You can expect to see 6/7 if you have the URD 7th injector kit installed or other mods such as the URD 2.2" pulley.

Random fluff question, from you guys who know more about these things:

If you're driving gently, up and down through the RPM ranges, you don't hear much from the SC. But when you get it on it and load the engine, you get that lovely whine while the SC is doing work.

Why does that happen? What's making that sound?

It can't be RPM (can it?) since it's driven off the belt and spinning faster or slower regardless of engine load, and the compressor is always engaged (right? Or am I underestimating the complexity of this lovely device?)

I assume it must be because boosting pressure when you goose it, and I'm interested in the difference between normal operation at 2500 RPM and loaded operation at 2500 RPM (ie. when it's whining.) Is it just simple mechanics of the pressure difference? Is the pressure regulator involved?

It's the belt.
Really! I never would have ascribed that sound to the belt--it's such a mechanical, turbine-y sound, nothing like the squeal of a slipping PS belt. Though I guess it has the same nature as the sound the PS pump makes when you turn all the way to the extents.

I guess that leads back to the first question, though: why does it make that sound only when the engine is under load?

I guess what I'm really curious about at this point is whether or not the compressor is engaged / disengaged by something (like the pressure regulator?) Intuitively, it seems like it should be whining when its spinning fast but the engine is resisting more air (ex: when engine braking.)

I suspect I would have a better idea of what's going on if I had my boost gauge installed, but I've been waiting until I get around to rolling my own.

It's the belt.

Really? I thought it was the supercharger.

So how do I know if my 7th injector is actually working? There are not indicator lights or anything like that. I can't tell if I have a ping or not. I have so many drive-train noises that it is hard to tell. If I were pinging would I get a CEL?

I have a AFR Gauge ordered but it will still be two weeks until I get it on and just want to know if the rig is safe to drive around daily.

Thanks

Pinging does not throw a check engine light. You'll know if you are pinging because you'll hear "pinging". It's like a metal grinding noise, high pitched.

You'll know if your 7th injector is running once you get the AFR gauge on. Should run roughly 12's at full throttle, if not you have to tune it or troubleshoot it.

Did you ever find that vacuum leak? Or was there even a vacuum leak at all?

Hmm, then I might still have some of the pinging. Yes, I took everything off and reinstalled and no po171 so that issue solved. :)

I am new to the site so forgive my ignorance if I'm not putting this is the right place but I just recently bought a 96 4Runner with the trd supercharger, the check engine light is on with code p0325 knock sensor 1 circuit (bank 1) I have found a small amount of information on how to replace the knock sensor and harness but those are without superchargers being that I would be charged $300 in labor to get it done I'd like to do it myself. Can anyone give me more information on how it's done or point me in the right direction I have searched were a few days now without much luck thanks.

I just replaced mine. Took like 5 hours. How well are you with turning wrenches? It's a pretty deep job to jump into of all you do it change your oil and tires.

What color is your super charger? Black or gray? Do you have any other upgrades like smaller pulley or fuel modifications?

Where do you live?

There are not any write ups on doing the knock sensors I believe. I can walk you through it if you would like. Send me a PM on here and I'll send you my phone number and we can chat about it or something. Or if you get stuck doing it u can pick my brain.

Such a nice guy!

To be honest, $300 for knock sensor is not a bad quote. However, our engines don't seem to like non-Toyota sensors very much.

That's $300 just for labor I would have to pay the dealership 250 for one knock sensor another 30 for the harness and another 15 for the gasket
