The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Just curious, how much extra boost can one get from porting a 1st gen supercharger? I guess you cannot port a second gen right?
You won't make any more 'boost', all porting does is improve flow. If anything you would loose boost since there is a lower surface roughness and a larger cross sectional area.

I do not think I would port the supercharger any. After spending last weekend elbow deep in my 2nd gen though I would definitely be tempted to polish the interior though. From a carb motorcycle background I learned the mantra of smooth before gas, rough after. I did a little smoothing right after the intake point on my supercharger because I could not stand seeing that casting there.

Afr is hooked up and working! What numbers should i be looking/aiming for? How will I know if im pinging? Will certain afr pop up under certain rpms?

12 or so, but really depends on the vehicle. Some are happier with 11.5, some 12. If you're really not sure what to do, I would take it to a dyno and have it professionally tuned (that is, assuming you have a piggyback controller like what comes with the 7th injector or an AEM fuel/timing control).

Thanks, goal right now is just to drive it for a month or so without causing engine damage. I have a stock pully producing 6 lbs of boost, 7th injector kit and the afr gauge. This will be my first tune but I have alot of reading to do. A dyno tune might be best for me though as I don't have much time to tune it myself.

Under 13 anytime you are in boost, and then linearly to 11.7 until wot.

Cool, I think I'm hitting afr a little north of that while at 1-3 boost. Is it 'safe' to drive around in vacuum until I get my tune sorted out? Safe meaning no pinging.

yes lol idk why but it seems like everyone forgets toyota designed this kit to be a slap on and go kinda thing. i never had hardly any ping and when i did (only when i bogged it) it didnt explode anything lol i just let off the gas. i had nearly 87000 miles on mine b4 the tune with the aem and it is still kicking.

Thing is I have the 7th kit hooked up but it is a used unit. It might have a custom map loaded on it that might skew with my rig. My rig has 215k so want to be safer then sorry on this one.

It's not going to hurt anything. These engines are built much stronger than you are realizing. I've had my supercharger on a stock system for over 100,000 miles with absolutely no issues. I checked the valves 9 months ago and they were all perfectly in spec, no evidence of heat damage.

Toyota didn't require fuel mods with the supercharger because it wasn't necessary. Not ideal, but not necessary.

I went back for a another dyno tune appointment after this because it didn't feel quite right. I forgot to have them send me the new result page though. When I went back in and they put it on the dyno, it read different results than it did when I left the first tuning appointment. Does the Ecu try to make adjustments on the URD piggyback system? Power didn't change much after the re-tune but it drives smoother now.

Wow...those are some good numbers!! Once I get mine up and running...I want to find a dyno and see where I'm at. Anything 200hp and up at the rear tires would satisfy me. Now, please don't get me wrong...I'd love more!! But being realistic...I'd be happy with 200hp. At least until I change over to the smaller 2.2 pulley...then I'd except more!

Oops...I guess I should ask you first...which pulley are you running?? Either way...Thanks for posting your numbers!!

Really I think 200 seems a little low? I should get setup on the dyno again, but I would guess I am around 220 with the mods I am running. My goal by the end of next summer is low 300's high 200's lol.

What elevation are you at??
What pulley do you have?

Care to share your map with those interested... Like me!

Hey,

- I am close to sea level (200ft)
- URD 2.2" Pulley
- No problem! But, the map I have in my email was from the original dyno appointment where it ran rough. I will have the shop send me the more current map so I can post that.

I agree, much lower than I anticipated. On my way to the Pismo Jamboree this weekend it ran extremely rough so I brought it back home and figured out 1 out of the 3 ignition coils was no good. Since I replaced it today it runs much better now. I'm curious if that would make a difference on the dyno. Not sure.

This was my thought process. Our 3.4L put out 180hp at the crank...so we need to subtract 20%-23% for drive train loss, which puts us around 142hp +or-. So the dyno has him at 200hp at the rear wheels....his Supercharger is making around 58-60hp. If I figure correctly that's means the S/C is boosting power by roughly 41-42%.

For such a small S/C and such a small CI engine to start with...I think thoes are good numbers...not Awesome, but good soild numbers. Also...remember when I wrote this...I was under the impression he was running the stock pulley. I was figuring once he bumped up to the 2.2 pulley he would be very close to 50% increase in power, which is usually what a S/C company states they will make.

Now that I know he was running the 2.2 pulley...yes, I'd say he's a little low on power. Now if my thoughts and/or math is all wrong...then please feel free to correct me and share your knowledge with me. I love learning new things.

Thanks for the breakdown, that's interesting. I'm curious if the bad ignition coil could have attributed to the low numbers.

Loud Runner, you are more than welcome for the breakdown. And yes...I have no doubt your bad ignition coil definitely effected your numbers. You basically lost all or part of the power that cylinder should be making. You Put down 200hp on the dyno...so each cylinder is responsible for making 33.333hp. With you having ignition problems in one cylinder...depending on what was going on with your coil...you could be down anywhere from 1hp all the way up to 33.333hp. Now I have to caution you...this is almost over simplifing the breakdown. But it's close enough and gets you in the ball park.

Good luck...

I Found One!!

Good morning everyone! Just wanted to say I'm really excited I found my S/C yesterday! Guy found it at auction and was parting it out. Didn't even know what it was at first!

I was wondering however, if anyone has the throttle cable bracket from a 2000 (the S/C came from a 2001 and has the different bracket) Did anybody with a 2001 keep the bracket for the other models? It should have 2 'u-shapes' instead of just the one.

And on that note, if anyone needs a 2001 bracket! Let me know.

Happy to be a part of the club, just sourcing a few more pieces and it should be ready to go next week! Can't wait!
