The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Hey guys I want to know if it is normal to have a lower pitch rumble/chatter/vibration come from the supercharger right before it stars to make boost? I only notice it when I am accelerating and at lower RPMs I can't hear it a cruising speed. Any help on this would be appreciated. If I have to rebuild the s/c so be it lol nose cones are cheap :p

Does it make the same sound at idle?

Are you running a 1st gen or 2nd gen S/C? If second ten you might want to do the oil change with the coupler. Mine does the same thing. Everything feels solid except a little play with the nose cone. Did some research and the plastic coupler that comes with the oil Change is normally the culprit.

I have the second gen. I find this interesting, it is a very very deep sound to be coming from a plastic coupler. I can give that a shot though I guess, it probably needs it anyhow.

I'll see If I can make a video of the sound tonight, but they never really can capture what is actually happening...

I see what you mean, big thanks to trdparts4u lol, but I should replace the oil along with the phenolic drive adapter. I think the drive adapter works kind of like a shear pin on a shaft so you don't damage the main internals of the supercharger when snapping in and out of load. I could see that making this noise, I will give this a shot, thanks!

Hey guys how much boost do you guys make with your stock second gen S/C's? I am only making like 5-5.5 PSI max. Any suggestions short of adding a smaller pulley?

5-5.5psi is about all you can hope for with a stock pulley. smaller pulleys are not that expensive just make sure you have fuel mods before you do.

Just be glad you dont live at > 4-5000' above sea level, that 5-5.5lbs max drops as elevation goes up. You have to run smaller pulleys out here to get close to stock boost levels.

Take it off and mail it to me, its a problem i want to learn to live with! :high5:

Ahh gotcha i would have swore i was hitting 6 easily I'm probably
going nuts though lol. (Weekend with the family will do that) I am not going to touch fuel mods for a while unfortunately. I am running 93 though.

Haha I think I can deal :P

Ok guys, so I do have the old school TRD fuel management unit on, which I have been told by a Toyota mechanic to remove. However, with my 2.1 pulley, my question is, being in castle rock, CO (6200 feet high), could i remove it like he strongly recommended, or will my injectors not be able to keep up with my 8 lbs of boost

Do you have a boost gauge?

Gasket maker never setup after I installed the new nosecone so now i have a small seepage on the bottom of the cone... I recommend using a gasket maker that you know is not expired if you get the new nosecone kit...

I cannot stress enough the importance to treat the supercharger with extreme caution. Like a lot of people whom everyone have seen I have a love/hate relationship with the s/c. I bought my 2004 Tacoma 6 years ago and thought how badass I was because it had a s/c. I went through one set of heads two years ago and at the time I did not have the money for the injector kit and guess what...I cracked another head just a couple months ago. This time around I put all my cards on the table did the essentials. First, I went from 3.93 gears to 4.88. What and difference. Even with a limp motor I went from 14 mpg to 15.5. And secondly I went to the URD 7th injector kit. Again, what a difference. Went from 15.5 mpg to 17. In addition to that I have the 170 thermostat and an external transmission cooler. My 35" Toyo MT's roll down the freeway with ease. Yeah the injector kit is a little steep but it is a MUST for anyone who has the TRD s/c. Especially for those of you who put the smaller pulleys on there, its only going to ruin your heads that much faster with more air and no fuel compensation. Be smart, spend the money needed to make it run right and save yourself a butt ton of money in the long run

How did you ruin your heads lol? Bent valves from ping? Typically you see bent rods from that... Were you running a smaller pulley without fueling? Idk about you, but I haven't had any issues other than a leaky snout and I am running 5psi (stock pulley) with no fueling mods. I also get 13 in town and 20 mpg on the highway. May have some what to do with having a manual but still.

I am pretty sure you would have to drive it like you stole it to cause the issues you are describing....

MTD I'm glad to hear you say "13 mpg in town". I thought I was the only one.
I never worried about it until throwing DashCommand in where the MPG stares back at you all the time. Started thinking something was wrong - swapped out my plugs, wires, fuel filter, cleaned MAF and IAC, cleaned air filter, and even added octane boost (we only get weak 91 here in Oregon).
This is in addition to the URD 6 injector kit, 2.2 pulley, and Snow Performance meth kit. Truck has power to spare...but man burning $4 a gallon gas at a rate of 13mpg is starting to wear on me. Guess I need to just get a commuter car and enjoy the runner for what it is - a beast.

I've had my blower on the 4Runner for 8 years. No problems at all. I do have the URD 7th inj kit with all the trimmings. Mine is no problemo and it has 100K miles on it now.

Speedy - I'm with you. 8 years and 75k miles with the 6 injector URD kit. Did have the S/C rebuilt about 10k ago but it had 40k before I bought it. Great kit and the 5vz is an awesome engine.

What is your MPG in town btw?

when you say TRD fuel management unit do you mean the old TRD 7th injector or just a TRD fuel pressure regulator?

Yeah, exactly. I actually removed it fairly recently, seems to be doing fine. It is still pumping out way too much fuel, I'm going to check my plugs here soon. A buddy of mine was actually following me the other day and told me that when I killed the gas pedal off a dead stop I had a black cloud come out the exhaust. Thoughts?
