The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Hey guys,

New to the forum and really happy about all the great information I have found...I have a question about my black supercharger on my 04 tacoma 3.4l...with the belt off the nose cone how should it feel? The bearings feel good not to loose or no grinding. A tiny amount of play back and fourth which I assume is normal? I have seen a lot of play back and fourth before engagement but mine is ever so noticeable...is the coupler going bad? If so how worried should i be? I have a road trip from seattle to california planned in December and want some piece of mind. Thank you!

Hail Mary—Looking for help!!

So I have had my supercharger for 60,000 miles with the 7th injector kit and I recently decided to install the 2.2 inch pulley from URD, but so far they haven't been working at all. My mechanic says the car sounds like it's going to explode when the boost kicks in.

I called URD and they told me to re-install my stock air filter (I had a K&N installed.) That did nothing.

Now they say I should try getting an injector service and if that doesn't work, then they recommend putting the stock pulley back on. Plus they won't take a refund now for the 2.2 because it's technically used.

So I'm kind of screwed. I was hoping someone out there had some tuning advice or something. I just can't seem to get these parts to all work together, but when I was doing my research on this all the 4runners I saw had the same parts I do... so any advice?

Interesting, but I agree with the other guys, a video of the exploding would be really helpful.

If you end up selling it I might be interested.

Try some new injectors and maybe a new MAF so the ECM has the proper readings. Could be a combo of alot of issues.. Sounds like a pinging issue most likely. You using the right fuel?

I would just look into logging for a while and and tuning it yourself. It is not that hard if you are mechanically apt it just takes time. There are videos on youtube that can get you started.

The second post has been updated with rebuild info and links. I will be adding more to it as time permits and I search through posts for more info. I've been rebuilding a 1st gen unit, so ask any questions you'd like and I'll try to answer my best.

Awesome stuff, definitely is some great info you've put together.

I did have one question though and maybe others who have replaced the rear bearings have experience here. I've read some people who said you can "press" the bearings out of the back of the S/C (black 4th Gen), whereas others say you need a special tool of some sort to thread it in and then beat it out. Are these just different methods, or are some build differently that allow you to remove the rear needle bearings by pushing them out of the back of the housing?

I had to stop my write up but will be getting to this. You can press out the old rear needle bearings if you tap the back of the black sc. Most people don't like drilling holes into their sc so they have to remove them using this method. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=48a8QvPwbWQ

If you want to press them out then you can drill a hole right behind the bearing and use a tool to press out the bearing.

Ahh, that makes more sense! I think I misunderstood the use of the word "tap". I'd seen the video you linked before but since it's not the TRD supercharger (which is larger and a bit more complicated) I wasn't sure it there were other ways. Knowing myself... I'd probably misplace the drill hole and ruin my SC... so not sure if I am going to replace the needle bearings after all.

Well, to be honest I just picked it up last night so I haven't taken it on a proper test drive but I'll do that and take a video and post it.

Thanks for all the replies!
And no, I'm not trying to sell it—yet. I was planning to drive this thing for another 200k miles at least because I've maintained it pretty well. I'm just stumped as heck as to this URD pulley.

And to the person that asked about fuel, I'm running the premium 91 octane CA fuel. Gaget recommended running racing fuel, but I'm not really trying to do that on a normal basis for obvious reasons. I was really hoping this 2.2 inch pulley would work as a daily driver, but if not I'll just have to go back to the stock pulley.

Video to come!

Sorry for the huge delay

I apologize for the huge delay on the video. Halloween came up, then it was very rainy where I live (so it wasn't conducive to good audio on the video) and work kicked me in the butt.

I did a couple videos, but the audio was pretty weak. Gonna re-shoot with a friend to try and get better results.

As for the exploding noise, I don't hear it. Honestly I think my mechanic just forgot how loud this supercharger gets when it whines. I have noticed a crackling noise under high RPMs, which normally only happens when I run the wrong gas. I believe that would be detonations? I tried putting in 4 gallons of racing fuel to bump up my octane to 93, but after running a whole tank like that it didn't really help, which to me would indicate that the issue is with fuel delivery as opposed to octane?

Would love to hear what some of you think about this when you get a chance.
Again, sorry for the delay on the videos, will try to have one up there by today.

I also plan to clean the MAF sensor and Throttle body, as well as run some seafoam through the PCV tube. I dumped a whole can of seafoam just into my last tank of gas (not the 93 octane one) and that didn't seem to do too much. Had a tiny bit of thin smoke for about 20 seconds and that was it.

Thanks again guys!

Yeah, that "crackling" noise is pre-detonation or pinging. It means you are running lean, not enough fuel. It is not good for the engine but won't necessarily kill it right away. Keep it like that for a while though and you'll find your self with issues with the valves.

You can try adding higher octane fuel or try a tune-up. Sometimes the culprit isn't just fuel but bad spark plugs or dirty MAF giving incorrect air readings.

Why not just tune it? It is fairly inexpensive in comparison to the s/c and is much less expensive than a new motor...

Hi there!

I'm new here, either on the forum, in the country, and with 4runner as well.

I recently purchased a '98 4runner 4WD SR5 MT with a S/C (1st gen) on it.

I did some tune up today (MAF and TB cleaning). I had fun.

My question is about the S/C. I can see there is some decent leak on the back of it. (see pictures at the end)
I don't know sh** about S/C and have only some knowledge on mecanic, but still, I'm doing good.

So should I need a kind of gasket replacement for that or a rebuilt? Not sure since how many miles the S/C has been installed though.

(Mod: if I need to put that in a new thread just tell me. Since it's about S/C question I thought I could just continue here)

I've already found a tons of knowledge here and I want to thank all of the community! It's always a good help!

Thank you!

Just out of curiosity, what has everyone raced and actually beat? I know everyone says it's still a 4runner but I would like to know if you could beat some cars in a straight up race say from a red-light up to 60ish would a supercharged lifted with 33s 4runner be able to beat a 2005 scion tc? My buddy has one and I'm curious also what about a dodge cummins , if I were to get a supercharger and 7th injector I would want to be sure that I would be able to beat them if they ever wanted to try and race .

Thanks all

I noticed some unusual noise coming from the 4Runner this weekend when it was idling in the driveway. Popped the hood and I think the dynamic tensioner is calling it quits. It's bouncing a bit at idle and noisier than I'd expect. I believe the bearing on the pulley may be going out.

I thought this would be a simple Google search to find the P/N to replace it but that hasn't been the case. What I keep finding is a "kit" that's nearly $150. That seems excessive for a dynamic belt tensioner.

Can you guys point me in the right direction? This is all I've been able to find:

P/N ptr29-35074

I found just a pulley at URD but even it's $100.

I got a Dayco for my supercharged Challenger for like $40 on Amazon and was hoping for the same here?
