The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Is that correct for all years?

Not quite. The later models have EVAP box in the rear of vehicle so that portion would be gone. And some don't have 4wd. But essentially it's the same.

I make them to order based on individual wants/needs. 100% custom. So really anything can be changed/added/tweaked. Totally my design, with aspects I pulled from TRD diagram and combined with stock diagram.

If interested, PM please to save from littering this thread.

Glad you like the video. Others apparently like it too. In 2 days, it has almost 2300 views. When Sean told me about this project, I said sure, I'll help you out and we'll film it but how many people are going to be interested in this video? A supercharger is an expensive modification. Sean thought it would be very popular and he was right and I was wrong. I'm not 100% sure but I think this is our fastest growing video we've launched. There's an incredible amount of interest in it which is surprising to me.

4Reak Show is local to us so hopefully he'll make it to our next party, sometime this spring, and maybe he can drop off a decal for Sean. I think our next party is going to our biggest one yet. We had guys from Tacoma World saying they'd make the trip from Los Angeles if we gave them enough notice. At our last party, we had members from this forum, Tacoma World and 3rd Gen Mafia show up. It was pretty cool. This year, which I don't know if it's smart or not, we're going to do a video invite to our viewers. 4runners, Tacomas, BBQ, Beer, and talking about Sic Mods. Does it get any better?

That's because hands-down it's the best mod you can do on these 4Runners. Pricey, but very worth it.

4Reak Show nice! We need some "Premium Fuel Only" decals as well :tea:

I have one on the inside of my fuel door, did the not come standard with the TRD kit? I assumed they did.

Now I'm wondering if I'll join the club and drop the coin on this. I know I won't just get the SC and I'll get the 7th injector too so we're talking $4000. I bought my 98 for $6500 and I've already dropped another 8k on bumpers, skids, rock rails, winch and a lift. This mod bug is an expensive one for sure.

The entire reason I 3.4 swapped my 2nd gen was to supercharge and 7th inject. Never looked back and never regretted it. I recommend both to anyone with the 5VZ

The 7th is not 100% necessary and in my opinion opens up another world of OCD tuning and tweaking. But if you can be satisfied with a final result while also realizing squeezing every ounce of power is somewhat a losing/time consuming battle, it is also totally worth it. Not NECESSARY, but worth it.

I would just choose a line. There's guys with 7th injector, lightweight flywheel, lightweight harmonic balancer, Meth injection, Intercooler, 2" (not 2.2 or even 2.1!) SC pulley, and they still want more. If you got the money to burn, absolutely shoot for the moon. Otherwise, get some boost and enjoy the drive.

All I wanted was to have power close to what it was when it was stock. So to have that and then some with just the SC is perfect. I have zero urge to add more.

But, I also have another car in the garage with a crate 383 if I feel the need for some power. :car:

You're a smart guy, why wouldnt you find a used one for way less and just rebuild it? I got my 1st gen for $400, rebuild parts are around $170 I think? Another $400 for all the install stuff if you can't get it off the donor. So if you go that route, it's about a grand. This assumes you don't need to have anything coated on the inside, of course.

Your absolutely right Sam about first checking for a good used one and I think that's the route I'd take first before dropping the coin for a new one from Magnuson. I guess doing this install with Sean has keyed me in on all the accessory parts that are necessary so I'd definitely give the seller of a used one the 3rd degree of questioning making sure I did get everything before I bought it.

Looking forward to seeing your rebuild video.

So your viewers had to tell you to upgrade mics and quit producing shaky video....ooooook. I was trying to be helpful but you've come off like a know it all and I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it is the internet after all. If you had hundreds of video items and 20 thousand subscribers I'd not have bothered, but thought you might take some feedback from someone a bit more seasoned.

Content doesn't have to be 90 minutes to be technically thorough. There's nothing new or ground breaking about what you're doing.

Yep we're done.

Hella late to the party and I’m pretty sure you guys are over it by now, but sorry, I just had to say something.
Why would you bother buying all new gear like tripod HD camera and external mic if you weren’t sure that people would watch and subscribe.
That’d be like going out and buying an all carbon full suspension mountain bike and full gear and not knowing if your even going to like it and stick with it.
I am a experienced mechanic and like the fact that mtbtim and infamousRNR take the time to explain step by step and tell you how hard or finicky something really is. I know everyone is different but it really helps especially if your doing a job for the first time. I actually hate the short videos that say for example remove dash than edit and skip to the dash being off. Not telling you how hard or involved or exactly where every clip is. Cause then there you are balls deep into a project with hella broken clips and at the start you were thinking oh this guy had a 20 min video it can’t be that difficult.
Also idk if most people have ever heard of this but YouTube let’s you FF. That’s exactly what I do when I just need a refresher or need to find a specific spot in a video, and that goes for any kind of videos not just Tim’s.
To each his own but I personally am a detail oriented person and appreciate the time and effort that Sean and Tim take to make these videos.
Reading you say that people don’t like long videos reminds me of those guys that say they can do an 8 hr job in 2hrs. they just fail to leave out that they had 20 left over bolts and the customer came back because they left the shop and something didn’t seem right. I used to work with a tech like that and I was constantly having to fix his screw ups.
Not saying your a bad mechanic or anything it’s just something it reminds me of.
Sorry but that’s just my 10¢.

I think tim & I have just developed our own style geared towards someone who has never picked up a wrench in their life. That’s the audience that we want to entertain & show people who have never done any repair in their life that it’s possible. tim and I are just normal dudes, not mechanics. We want to make the most novice of DIY’ers feel confident that they too can accomplish great repairs that can often cost over a thousand dollars. This supercharger adventure was a real test to this as we didn’t have all the parts & learned as we got stuck. We phoned friends, consulted the manual & eventually got it done & got it done right. Tim is one of the most generous guys I’ve ever met & he & I will continue to contribute to the 3rd gen community & hopefully beyond! This forum is amazing & has helped sooooo much with my rig & others, & I hope to continue to contribute for as long as possible.. the only rig I’ve ever owned has been a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner & it’s awesome to have so many good contributors to this passion I call #teqlove

Why not just print them youself? I have a brother ptouch label maker that does great labels. I dont think they are more than 40$ and i use it everytime i mod or oilchange. My glove box is a ptouch labeled rundown of all the progress that reminds me to keep my 4runner. Also may need to keep my supercharger dispite paying bills with savings past two months. Just no work until march, contractor in telcom. I just listed my urd supercharger kit on ebay for a couple hundo less than i paid. Whats remarkable is how many 1k offers i received in 2 days.

Nice to support other 4Runner owners
But you can also get these made depending on the size and quantity for cheap at any swap meet.
I got my custom TRD quarter panel stickers and TRD center cap stickers made for $15.

After having my truck for almost 10 years, I decided I needed a little change. So I supercharged it this past weekend!

It was exactly what the truck needed. I had always noticed after my lift and 33" tires, that the car just got slower, but I figured that was the price to pay for those mods. But over time, that really affected its driving characteristic and made it somewhat unpleasant and sloth-like.

So now, not exactly sports car power, but finally enough power to get out of its own way, power up a mountain road, change lanes, and actually get on an on-ramp without having to slow down for every other car first! :dancin:

I ran some random stopwatch tests and came back with this:

60-70 mph
Before: 5.7 seconds After: 4.11 Seconds

25-60 mph
Before: 10.7 seconds After: 7.7 Seconds

Across that board, that's about a 28% improvement in acceleration, which I can live with!

I have one on the inside of my fuel door, did the not come standard with the TRD kit? I assumed they did.

These decals did come with the original kits, no idea now but definitely should have them.

I could easily make them, or better yet have my guy professionally do it, but if someone on the forum does them already why not support him? Kinda like my TRD caliper decals....those things go like hot cakes.

Now I'm wondering if I'll join the club and drop the coin on this. I know I won't just get the SC and I'll get the 7th injector too so we're talking $4000. You probably know all of this too LOL but I'd never pay $3K for one when you can find them cheaper if you look. I got mine for $1700 new from a dealer. Those deals may have evaporated, but I wouldn't ever pay retail on something like this for such an old vehicle.

That's a lot more than 10 cents haha but I hear ya. I'm not a mechanic for a living just to be clear, although a lot of folks assume I am based on the website and what not. I agree if you're gonna show someone how to do something that the major details and "gotchas" should be shown, I've just learned to cut that down and remove all the "ummms" and "aaannnnnd" and just plain silence and shaky camera movements from my productions so the viewer just mainly gets meat and potatoes. Shaves more time than you think at the end of the day. Also if you're going to show people who to do something you should have a good degree of understanding about that something, unless you're just producing comedy hour. I'd never show folks how to install "widget x" and not understand how it works for example.

Nothing against you guys.....seriously. I meant the feedback to be useful. I'm sure if we were all hanging out we'd all get a long pretty well. Feedback should be welcomed, however. I get a lot of it as well, and have learned a TON from folks more experienced than myself. I had a kid film student school me big time on audio last year and had my eyes seriously opened.

What 7th injector are you guys planning? Hopefully not the TRD one and one you can actually tune? Learning curve for sure, but well worth it at the end. I HIGHLY recommend water/meth as well. That had as much of an impact on my 4Runner as adding the supercharger to begin with.

OH, if you want your transmission to live, turn on ECT and LEAVE IT. Makes a huge difference after the blower.

This. If you go back enough pages in this thread, it even dyno'd for +5 HP definitively. The transmission just plays a whole lot nicer and helps get rid of low RPM ping.

It would be nice if a dealer still had a supercharger sitting on the shelf for sale for $1700 but I highly doubt it. If you can't find a good used one for a fair price and you really want one, buying from Magnuson for full pop might be your only choice. Oh, I got the snide remark too. I guess you're still calling me a know-it-all.

We're are already doing the same as you. We cut out the uhhs and umms and long pauses between words. But, my new favorite transition word seems to be "So" and there's lots of them in there to cut out now too. While I agree it's good to understand the component you're working on fairly well, you don't need to understand it to the level of a mechanical engineer to show somebody how to install it properly. I only know the basics about superchargers but that doesn't mean I'm not capable of showing somebody how to install it. Just like I can show someone how to replace an alternator but not fully understand how it generates power. When people ask me questions on our channel and I don't know the answer, that's ok. I give them an honest answer and point them in a direction where they will have a good chance at finding their answer.

You know Dude, you say you were just trying to be helpful but it sure felt like you were ramming it down my throat and being fairly judgmental. Yes, we can learn from people, no doubt, but I'm not going to cut a video down from 80 minutes to 30 minutes just because you said people won't watch a video that long. By the way, our SC video has been up for 4 days and has over 3100 views. I'd say people are watching it. When you made that comment that the video is too long and we should cut it down to 30 minutes, I'm pretty sure you hadn't even watched our video to see what we offered the viewer. Yeah, it's an 80 minute video but we offer a lot in that 80 minutes. We could have skipped an introduction and we could have skipped the test drive and maybe some other things but the video wouldn't be as good or as complete. One of the ways we envision people using our videos is they set up their laptop or use their smart phone in their garage or wherever they are working on their rig and they watch a step we do, they stop the video, perform that step and then play the next part. You said there's nothing ground-breaking with what we're doing but i disagree. A pretty high percentage of YouTube repair or mod videos leave out key steps and leave the viewer guessing. We are not afraid of posting a long video because we know anyone using our video tutorials isn't going to get lost.

We take feedback from our viewers, trust me. Some other feedback we heard from our viewers was providing part numbers in the video description so it would make it easier for them to look up parts. We now provide part numbers and links to where they can purchase them. Another suggestion was providing torque values in the video description and we did that as well. A complaint we got from the V8 swap video is we didn't show Mikey driving the rig. That's why we made sure for this SC video that we included a test drive to show how the vehicle is performing with the SC.

I just wish when it was clear to you after the several responses I gave in this thread that I wasn't going to take your advice that you would have backed off and not insulted me by calling me a know-it-all and then inferred you were somehow superior to us because you've been doing it longer and we should take your advice.

Even if you respond back to this post, I promise I'm done with this conversation. And, I apologize to anyone viewing this thread for being a part of taking it off course.

Maaaaan, you know I'm gonna respond, it's in my nature. I've tried to water things down to NOT seem harsh toward you but I'm used to hot rod forums where folks have thicker skin I reckon. I even put LOL at the end of my little jab to let you know I was just messing with you.

3100 views on your 80 minute video huh? Post the reporting showing how much of that is just a click and leave vs a full view or even a HALF view. There's a report under analytics. If you really have 3100 views of the full video, I'll proclaim I'm a complete idiot and subscribe to your channel, no joke.

I did take a peak at your vid this weekend matter of fact. Not bad to be honest, wordy, but decent and at least you show people how to do something so I'll give ya that. The cylinder thing you weren't sure about is called a bypass valve and releases pressure so you don't blow up the motor at part throttle. It's vacuum actuated (or lack of vacuum rather) to shut and put boost to the motor instead of venting to atmosphere.

Too bad you don't want to continue the discussion, but I agree this isn't the thread for it. I created us a new one:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-topic/250897-youtube-video-stuff.html#post2908889

Edited: You nearly had me at V8 swap, if you guys had pulled that off major props.......still cool to have video documented it though.
