Guys,

Been a long time!

The steering in my '99 Limited has some... issues.
Occasionally, it feels like it is binding inside the column, behind the steering wheel... it makes gritty/squeaky/grindy noises during the stiff times.

It's not the rack, not the ball joints, not the steering shaft coupler... every one of them moves freely.
I haven't yet removed the steering wheel, to look for any other the moving parts, but I plan on doing that next.

I'm not sure where else to look for the culprit!
Has anyone faced this issue? And if so, what was it?

There is at least one bearing and one bushing in the steering column, here's all the parts for the steering...

I need to get a discontinued part for my 3rd Gen 1999 Toyota 4Runner LTD and I am wondering if there are any non-discontinued parts that I can use instead. Only the plastic tabs broke, nothing more.

Part # is 84830-35041 which replaced 84830-35040 so either would work for me.

There seems to be similar parts that look like they might work, but eBay's part fitter says no:

84830-35050 4Runner Sequoia 2003-2020 Liftgate Release Switch

84830-34010 Tailgate Lock Switch 2001-2007 Sequoia

Anyone know if these or some other non-discontinued part number will work?

FWIW, in hindsight I realize I should have mentioned that I already placed an order with them and I am waiting to find out if they will actually be able to fulfill on a long-discontinued part.

Or as I suspect from past experience with other website retailers (e.g. yoshiparts.com) they just advertise all possible parts, take any order they can get, and then try to source the part from wherever they can find it which, for a long discontinued part, is almost always nowhere.

BTW, they have lots of disputes on the BBB website) and they seem to be well know for not holding inventory but instead source parts from dealers and then cancelling orders when they cannot source it.

I asked them via their chat to verify they had in stock and they would only repeat that they would email with within 4 days that the part shipped, implying they will also email me to cancel the order if they cannot source it, which I fully expect to be the case (though I will HAPPILY be wrong if they are able to source it.)

Given that I fully expect they will not be able to deliver, I wanted to see if I could find alternatives I could use that have not been discontinued for when the (IMO) inevitable email comes telling me they are unable to fulfil the order.

I bought a raggedy ass SR5 99 4Runner from auction and the previous owner apparently had a knack for bullshitting, after much work on the front end I eventually thought about doing a "quick" front diff fluid change when I ran into the tightest, stripped out drain plug I've ever encountered. I've already tried heat and just hanging on it like an ape, is there any wizard shit I can perform or should I just air chisel it to shreds with another case on standby?

Weld a nut onto it and unbolt the welded nut is probably the best last resort

Keeping myself honest, turns out Genuine OEM Toyota Parts and Accessories Online - Toyota Parts Deal was able to deliver the part I needed, even though it had been discontinued.

Hi all, my steering rack boot has been ripped for some time and it finally has started leaking and I’ve noticed a lot more play in my steering. The boot is just leaking out grease so my seals are likely still ok but I need to investigate the steering play and replace the boot itself. However I am moving back to college this week and have a 16+ hour drive. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on if this is something I should deal with before or if I can deal with it at college?
I would also love an info/videos on how to find which steering component has play and needs to be replaced.

There's basically no grease in the steering boot. If something is coming out, it is from the rack. A ripped boot lets in contaminants, but isn't the end of the world unless you are going to go the whole winter in the salt belt with it open.

For play in the steering - you'll need a helper and maybe some ramps. Key on, engine off. One person wiggles the steering wheel back and forth, the other feels every joint from the hub back up to the steering wheel for play. See what you get... the only one that is hard to feel with that method is inner tie rods.

Hey, everyone I got a 97 Toyota, 4 runner, 2 wheel drive auto and randomly.It will act like it's trying to find a position in between 2 gears or just bogs down completely while driving.I put it in neutral, slapped the throttle.And it's fine , but when it's in gear , it does not want to give any throttle it doesn't happen all the time.It only happens occasionally.Does anyone here have any guess?I bought a cheap t.P.s and it idled high , I just put the old one back on , and it's fine now I know that I haven't air control valve problem Any guesses
