Hey all

Having some shifting problems. Drove over a mountain pass today and once the road leveled out, my 4R was running at 3k+ RPM at like 65mph. Very unusual. Stopped at a stoplight and when I went to go, it went to about 2k+ through 1st and 2nd and then wouldn’t get out of 3rd. Revved to 3500 and then didn’t want to push it.

Turned it off and let it chill for a bit. No bad smells or noises. Oil didn’t look low, not overheating. After waiting 15-20 minutes I went to head back home. All seemed fine. Shifting normal, cruising1400ish rpm at 60-70. Check Engine Light came on a few minutes into the drive. And then as soon as I started to go uphill again, same thing. Just revved to 3k and wouldn’t shift. Pulled over now, waiting on tow. Don’t want to risk anything.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong? I will add that I recently moved into the mountains a bit, so I’m doing more mountain driving than usual the last few weeks.

Torque converter my first impression, code might tell something.

Gonna go pull the code this morning and I’ll report back. In the winter, on cold mornings the truck would make a high pitched whine/whistle and rev to about 2100 before it shifted into 3rd (I think it was third). Could this be another sign of torque converter?

Alright, pulled the code. P0770 indeed. Shift Solenoid ‘E’. What’s the most likely problem? Crossing my fingers it’s not gonna need a whole transmission.

The next step is replacing the solenoid. That might take care of it.

Not sure about a 3rd Gen but on 4th Gens sometimes and more often than not the problem is a little corrosion in the electrical connector to the transmission, disconnecting it and checking for corrosion and cleaning if needed usually solves the issue, on badly corroded connectors sometimes it requires replacement of the connector or replacing a pin or several, there are YouTube videos on this process.

1' rear icon lift?

Hi, I'm new to the form and could use some help with my 4runner lift. I have a 1998 SR5 4x4 and just finished adding Bilstein 5100 to the front with the stock spring and it lifted the front 1 3/4". On the rear I installed Bilstein and a 1" icon spring. The problem I'm having is that the rear lift was about 4" higher. The 4runner sits 1 1/2" higher in the rear and just doesn't look right and feels top heavy in the rear. Tire size 265/70/17. Measurements from center of hub to fender: Driver side front 22", rear 23.5" Passenger side front 22", rear 23.5". Measurements from ground to fender: Driver side front 36.5, rear 38.75 Passenger side front 36.5, rear 38.75. Stock spring when removed measured 14.5' and Icon spring measured 19.5". Icon rear coil spring kit 53015 and on the spring 158512.

Thanks, Joey

Probably not what you want to hear, buy the Eibach 1" springs for $225 at ShockSurplus. I just put on 5100's with the stock springs in the front and the Eibach in the back. Put a new bumper on and ended up setting the front at 2.3" and its level. Its the AllPro Offroad bumper which is not super heavy. I have a 2002 4X4 Sport with 250k.

My hubs 98 T4R (299k miles) was vandalized in Dec and we are wondering if we should just sell it for parts? Door lock was popped out, Center console was pulled apart, ignition switch was pulled apart. Besides paint oxidation on the hood and driver/passenger doors, the body itself is in great shape. What would you guys do? Thanks!!

I'm sorry to hear that happened. Being I have the few tools I'd need and a like for puzzles...were it mine, in otherwise good shape and maintained, and that's all the damages I'd figure out what was damaged and put it back together using junkyard parts wherever feasible. It'd be super-nice if they at least didn't cut any wires.
Cool thing about a self-serve junkyard is being able to take something apart and gaining some insight as to how it goes together, and there's info online to help.

Pacific Northwest: 2001 Limited available as project car

If there is a better place to post please LMK. New here.

My beloved, handsome, 2001 T4R Limited with around 300K miles has encountered a serious seeming engine issue (got loud, lost a lot of power, 1 valve cover came off) and I haven't been able to spend any time even looking into it. Probably needs an engine swap or at least overhaul. I am realizing I am in the wrong stage of life for a project car, so it is just sitting there unused. I am hoping to rehome my 4Runner buddy.

Anybody around Washington/Oregon looking for a project vehicle? The engine can start (or at least it could a month ago when I tried) but I wouldn't dare drive it. Probably needs to be trailered to your home base. I am near Maple Valley, Washington.

DeathCougar may or may not be interested depending on the condition.

DeathCougar's last post/visit here was about one month ago and he's stated he doesn't visit the forum much anymore...but one of his last post had contact info in it.....

"Send me a text 425-244-2856 or message me on my facebook page facebook.com/pnw4runnerconnection

I am not here much anymore"

Link to his facebook.... PNW 4Runner Connection

So you might want to reach out to him to see if he's interested.

That's difficult to say without knowing your level of mechanical experience. I'm not sure if mtbtim has a video covering leak down testing but he does have one for compression testing on youtube. I would call around and price having someone do a leak down test on cylinder 5. It's possible to do a leak down test wrong and end up going in the wrong direction.

Ancient post but the update:

The compression was fine - it was a coolant leak issue and I did end up getting another engine swapped in with 118k miles on it. Running strong now.

Hi - wanted to see if one of the admins could reach out to let me know why I'm unable to create a post/thread on either the 3rd Gen forum or the marketplace forum? Not sure what I did or didn't do on my acct that inhibits me from posting? Thanks in advance!

It's always been new members or even older members have to have 15 posts before they can start a topic or send an PM, this is done to reduce the amount of SPAMMERS from posting tons of spam.

You can reply to a bunch of topics to get your count up rather quickly.

Weird random no start issue

Hi guys,

Wanted to see if any of y'all had some input or any helpful info for a strange issue I had a couple days ago. So this Wednesday I went off roading in the morning and everything was fine. Aired back up and hit the road home to grab some things before I headed out for some bicycle related stuff with a buddy. So I drove out there its about 1 hour away and then I was parked for a good 4 ish hours then after I went back out to leave and I tried to start my truck up and it cranked then tried to start and then sputtered and then just stopped. Tried a second time, same thing. 3rd time I had to give the gas pedal a little touch to convince it to start and then it started this time. Once it started it running as it normally would i didn't notice anything different or wrong. I thought I popped off a vaccum hose or something haha. I did notice that at a stop though the idling was acting kinda strange it was jumping up and down from high 400's to 600's for a little. After that I was at my buds house and I had dinner and went out to see if It would happen again. This was about 3 hours after I got home. Same thing happened. Tried to start it and it did the same thing. Second time again no. So third time I had my buddy with a hammer bang on the gas tank while I started cranking and it then fired right up. Later that night when I left to go home I was fearing the same thing would happen, but no it cranked and fired right up like it always does and runs normal. It's been a couple days since then and I haven't encountered the same random issue again. It's started up normally every time and runs like it always does. This is kinda throwing me for a loop because I am very on top of maintence on my truck and it's strange I would have a random no start issue like this. Very few maintence items haven't been done before besides a couple things. That night I was thinking it was the fuel pump. I haven't replaced that yet. I am also on what I assume to be the original MAF sensor as well. What do you guys think?
