I am not sure and I don't have the feeling that someone was malicious, but came out from work to find a deep 14 inch irregular gouge into the paint on the hood. down to bare metal. Body shop 5 days they tell me. I am thinking what could have done that (or who). If someone had wanted to key the car paint seems to me they would have done more than a 14 inch part. I don't have that feeling one gets when someone has F'd with me either.

any thoughts on the fix appreciated.

Ouch, sorry to hear about that, alaskaman. Could you post a pic? It might be easier to tell if it were accidental or intentional if we could see it.

-When you mean "gouge" was the metal actual dented/creased?
-Where exactly on the hood?

Are there "swipe" marks as if something fell and left a trail or is it a clean scratch (as from an intentional keying). Takes a bit of force to get down to the bare metal though.

it actually seems to be both a deep gouge without crease and it is irregular with parts deep into the metal. I just went out and looked at it again and the mark extended onto the headlight top but that wiped off without a scratch. I don't think it was intentional but I cannot for the life of me figure out what could have done it. I don't have my camera with me (Modesto this week)...also the rubber between the chrome and the hood clearly was a bit disturbed as well with......Looks like something dragged across it, but with the height of the 4Runner no idea what that would be.......
 
typical hospital parking lot. I parked with the hood of the car out so I could leave without backing up in the morning. night shift I was in the second row to small for trucks no forklifts.....hmmmm
 
As an aside, that's one of the reasons why I always park into a stall nose first. In my case, the nose always faces a solid concrete wall at work and my two co-workers to the side of me. If (god forbid) something hits me, it'll be the rear end rather than the front end. I don't mind the hassle of backing out if it keeps my nose out of harms way. Same for a public lot if possible.

Are there cameras, maybe you can ask to check the data? Any trees or construction scaffolds nearby? Concrete leaves falling maybe? (My old acura got hit by some roof flashing one rainy windy night. Left a nice gouge/scratch as you described on the trunk lid)
 
appreciate the thoughts. no wind last night. talked with the body shop. they will want the vehicle for 5 days for correct color match they say....not looking forward to time without it. and back to your earlier comment it does take quite a force to get down to bare metal....I am thinking something happened fast. talked with security....but they were not helpful...

will post pics next week....
 
did you check the surrounding area of the attack (gouge) check all over on the front part of the car, you may find some clues to guide us along. A screw driver could do that with a good arm/hand.

5 days and all they need to do is paint the hood? Your hood can be primed, prepped painted and cleared in 2 days max. That includes an overnight for the primer to cure. For this repair, there should not be a concern about color match. They will apply the color primarily over the repaired area and blend the basecoat into the rest of the panel.
 
I took a look around the parking lot last night at work. yes there is a forklift 3 rows from where my 4Runner was parked and delivery trucks come and go and could have used the lane which faced the front of my vehicle. Security is reviewing video of that night but that might take a while. I don't think it was intentional but probably never know..........appreciate your insights all.
 
Maybe someone set a heavy box on the hood for whatever reason, that had the large copper staples in it. Hopefully the security guard actually reviews the video from that night and finds what happened so maybe you can get some compensation for the repairs.

I hate irresponsible jerks who damage someone's vehicle and never leave a note or at the least an explanation..... :bash:
 
I agree. If they knew it they should have left a note and I can't see how they would not....do the right thing. I take it in to the adjustor tomorrow and will go over the vehicle very well to make sure I have not missed anything.

fyi I offered to watch the video (12 hours) but security declined as I would like to know for sure what happened. Will get a pic posted when I get back to Sactown.

No idea but here's one thought. Weedeater.. I had someone turn what was probably a weedeater on my Miata once while it was parked and it left a long straight scratch down to metal on the fender.
 
Front Grille for the Beast

The adjustor said that he thinks the car was keyed. Going to repair the hood replace the headlamp and he offered the color key grille instead of the smoke chrome (same $). I know some of you really like the color keyed grille. I am tired of the water spots on the grille already.

Any thoughts?

it seems everyone that has changed to color-keyed grilles love it, myself included. I posted pics in this thread: http://toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29958 - not the best pics...but as others have said, it gives the truck a more "stealthy" look...
