Well hopefully you are genuinely interested in a 4Runner and not being an idiot Pathfinder fan boy. I think the past Pathfinders were great vehicles but the new ones went a little too cheap for my taste. In fact, I think the upscale QX4 was more on par with the 4Runner than the standard Pathfinder in regard to interior quality and luxury options. To answer your questions though, yes they have self diagnostics which are OBDII (96 on, I think). Your current Pathfinder has OBD which is why you can read it without a scanner. OBDII would require a scanner but neither system "tells you where to put the wrench" unless you are a schizo. The 4Runner doesn't really fix itself but then again it never really needs much fiixin'. When it does I think it's easy enough to work on. Cheap parts? Budget friendly yes, except if you're an OEM only person, but definitely not cheap. $50 dollar shocks are not a great deal, Bilstein or not, it's just the normal price range. I have Bilsteins on mine and I paid $260 total for the rear shocks and front struts.

The diesel thing is cool, those are fairly rare though, right? A T4R is pretty easy to work on too. There are several tricks for code reading that vary by year but you can get the info very easily. There are certain pieces of info such as a check engine light code you can pull, post OBDII you may need the code reader (which is cheap). Toyota has done a few things like certain reset procedures that can be done by jumping terminals on the OBD port. My guess is the tech who is familiar with the Nissan may prefer it, the Toyo guy will swear by the Toyo for self-diagnostics.
The '99-'00 3rd gen might be the "best" in your terms, rugged, simple, easy to work on, simple systems and yet sophisticated.
I don't think we're going to convince you and likewise, you're not going to convince us. BTW, I had an '87 Nissan P/U w/a 2.4 and a stick. That was a great platform, no doubt. The Toyo platform is pretty impressive too.
