The Driveshaft Clunk - what type of grease?

I'm going to need to do this, my clunk is driving me crazy and I didn't know what it was.

In most cases, yes. There are only a few differences between marine vs regular greases. The marine grease I use on the boat has a few corrosion inhibitors, but is still a high temp, high pressure synthetic grease with some moly.

Marine grease has different thickeners to make it more waterproof than regular grease. Be aware that different thickeners are not always compatible with each other.

Based on what I've read, grease with moly is the best thing to take care of the clunk. Other grease probably will not fix it for as long. But moly grease is not ideal for the universal joints. I think there is some debate about whether it's OK to use in those or not, so to be safe I don't use moly grease at all since I only have one grease gun.

I've used Mobil 1 synthetic, but it didn't last very long. It made a mess in my grease gun, so I switched to Mystik hi-temp red, which is supposed to be good. I haven't noticed any clunking since I put it in, but it hasn't been long enough to say if it's better.

The local Castrol lube center uses Lucas Red they say. Why not Castrol, I wondered? The clunk is back after a fairly short while. The search continues...

No need to search. I've done the work for you. Use the "Green Grease" I linked to above. You should be able to find it at your local auto parts store.
