The Engine Is A Goner, Warped Head And Long Block!!

NOOB
:bash:

Maybe you don't get the fact that I was referring to this statement. Try reading the whole thread next time.

"It was my truck with the broken serpentine belt but the misfire on cyl 6 has been occuring for months and I had no idea Anything was wrong besides just a random rough start- then I went 4wheeling and mud got caked in the engine and caused two pulleys to seize which in turn caused the serpentine belt to snap. When the belt broke I was only a mile away from the dealership and the engine was running hot so maybe that made the existing problem worse? "

Lots of head gasket issues on the V6 engines in the past but overheat ANY aluminum engine and you are in for warped heads/block in no time. My first engine swap was in 1970...so who is the noob? When your aluminum engine gets hot it is time to shut it off....or get your checkbook out.

Here is a link to an article about the R&D that went into the 100 series Land Cruiser when it was released in 98 w/the 2UZ-FE. The engineers say that iron was selected for the block due to its strength and "bulletproof durability". They researched aluminum blocks and they weren't up to the task. It also discusses how all the internals of the engine are beefy.

Another interesting point is the chief engineer makes an effort to say they used NO hydroforming in the production of the frame; however, today's 200 series has a hydroformed frame which Toyota raves about.

Riverrider, yes I understand there are billions of cars with aluminum blocks, those billions of cars were not meant to be driven under the harshest, most extreme conditions in the world. They were not meant to carry 1500lbs of people and gear across the Australian Outback in 100 degree weather for 300k+ mile duty cycles. I am sorry, but an iron block surpasses an aluminum block in strength and durability PERIOD.

You're 100 percent correct. But one thing to add is that at the time (mid '90s) when Toyota engineers developed the 4.7, iron blocks were also a lot CHEAPER. Tough, yes, but that's just part of it.

now's the time to do it if your gonna.... maybe a waste if your muddin.. or just paint it brown to begin with. :) the powder coat will help with insulation if done correct also. I undercoated my last 92 yota all over the engine bay, block, head, etc. and it didn't look any different after a week then before I did it. just helped with noise insulation and some rusty looking spots on the block... if nothing else it will help seal from corrosion and what not. happy buildin'! i will be in my garage building my veedub. beer here!

Hypothetically, what would it take to do an engine AND tranny swap on my 04 v6 with an 05+ v8 and tranny? Just a brief overview to see what it would take to tackle such a feat. I know that you gentlemen have much more experience in these matters, so I'm asking for some advice.

That would be alot of work and a ton of modifications, oh Yeah and not to mention you should have a good amount if disposable income!

You'll need at the very least a engine, tranny, ECU, all engine transmission wiring harnesses, dash harnesses, dash cluster, center console etc etc etc....

Why do you feel you need to go to a V8?

If you want more power you should just get a URD supercharger

You need a X1 for the URD supercharger and since APR isn't making the X1's anymore your gonna have to wait until Gadget finds another way of tuning.

REbuild

I've pulled and rebuilt my 89 Supercharged MR2 motor 3 times now, so I know full well how much effort and admirable dedication this kind of endeavor can take.
Excellent Write up!!!

well I justed totaled my v8 limited keep eye out The will strip it engine had 136 thousand miles I got it from my 70 year old dad drove for a month

Wow you only had your car a month before you totaled it?!

What are you, 16?

Yea. There wasn't one instance of punctuation in his post. Not one. That sounds like a new teenage driver to me. Rest in peace runner, rest in peace. You went before your time.

well looks like I'm also in the same situation with my wifes 4runner. 129k miles and pulling misfire code #6.. I'm dreading my next steps on what to do. It just started this 2 weeks ago.

you may not be, lets hope!

it could be spark plugs, thats the easiest thing to fix. then try a pressure leak down test and make sure to check if the coolant and oil are mixing in either the radiator or the engine oil

this is a continuation of my last thread:

Oily Spark Plug On A 4th Gen and Misfires On Cyl 6... HELP!!!! - Toyota 4Runner Forum

this past saturday night i brought my truck over my friends house (a toyota tech trainer) and we did a compression test on all cylinders and cyl 6 was pulling 199psi which was high compared to the others and that was the known cylinder that has been misfiring on startup, so we decided to do a compression leak down test, we put the engine at TDC and pressurize the cylinder and then we take off the radiator cap and guess what we see???

constant and consistant bubbling which means that the head/block is warped and since its a aluminium block its pretty much shot, sooooo i need a new engine at 128,000 miles!!!

so with the info at hand combined with all the past tests, we now know we need to pull the engine which a engine pull and replace is gonna run about 20 hours!!!

my friend then starts the search for a 1GRFE engine and he finds one the same day at a specialized toyota recycler up in sac only a hour away. i am going up tomorrow morning first thing to buy the engine, its from a 2005 sport with only 50k miles on it and with my buddys toyota discount its only going to cost me $1400 for a practically new engine, then the next step is the fun part....... 20 hours of pulling out the old v6 and putting in a new one, and dont worry i plan on documenting the whoe thing!!!

is anyone curious about what im going to do with the old engine? well im gonna strip down that aluminum block and make a sweet coffee table hahha

I am about to do the same :) Looks like we will have matching coffee tables. My engine isn't at the point yours is yet though, just have a small leak in the head gasket. So the search for a used motor is on :)

Keep me posted on your process, will you be doing the work yourself?

I ended up selling my engine for scrap cause I didn't have the time to take it apart, still wish I kept it....

My 2004 V6 just started the same thing with 133k...I think Toyota needs to do a recall. It is not a just a coincidence that this is happening between 100k-150k. I have read numerous threads now of this same problem with cylinder #6.

Started what exactly? Misfires on #6? Do you have a CEL on? Have you tried swapping the coil with another cylinder to see if the problem follows? Have you done a compression test?

I brought it into my mechanic for a rough idle problem during startup. They told me it misfires on cylinder #6 and that the head gasket has failed because they found coolant in the oil and I am not getting full compression on cylinder #6.

How is that the 1gr-fe in the 4runners are blowing head gaskets but the 1gr-fe in the X-runners are fine even up to 350-400whp?

As someone that had a 332whp/350wtq xrunner and is about to purchase a stock 09 sport 4wd i would really like to know before I drop $28k.

another one

My wife's is an '05 4Runner.

165K

Rough running engine w/ check engine lights. Diagnosed as intermittent misfires on cyls 4&6.

Changed plugs, improvement, but still happening.

Swapped coils around. Not the coils.

Pulled fuel injectors to check them. Injectors are fine.

Borescoped #4 cyl and see evidence of coolant.

Now dealer wants to sell me an engine for 6K plus labor and whatever additional parts!!!

This engine design is a piece of junk, and I will never buy another Toyota.

Quite a extremist...

Paying $6k for a new engine plus $3,300 for install from a dealer is re****ed, you can buy a slightly used engine for about 2k and install it yourself over the course of a weekend or a few weekends with the help of a friend. Toyota has excellent design and something as daunting a removing and replacing a engine can be done with basic hand tools. Try owning certain A vw passat for example and let me know how you feel when you have to replace the cam sensor at 100k and which to do that you have to pull the engine.

Call Specialized Parts Planet and have them find you a engine then find someone besides the dealer to do the swap
