The “I hope this one doesn’t catch on fire” build

I finally started dumping money into my 4Runner so I decided it was time to make a build thread.

I haven’t named my rig yet so for now I’m just hoping this one doesn’t catch on fire. 3 years ago my 1st gen 4Runner decided to burst in to flames while I was cruising the highway. Fingers crossed this doesn’t happen again.

1998 3.4l 5 speed 230k

Suspension:
Front- Tacoma bilsteins and eibach coils
Rear - superflex coils and Bilstein 5100s

1” body lift

Tires - 285/75r16 duratracs

Future plans

Regear 4.88 w/ locker
Repaint
Add lighting
Restore interior
Build a rear bumper
Build a roof rack

My old bugaru project before the 4runner caught fire once and i've had an extinguisher handy in the garage and in cars that i've worked on ever since. It added to the ratty, "devil may care" look of that car being that i got it out in time but i'll be avoiding it in the future.

I do love the title of this thread. That's a great one. Major bummer anything caught on fire though.

Good call.
Fortunately it was in the middle of the night, so when it rolled down the highway completely engulfed in flames nobody got hurt.

Unfortunately the movies lie when cars catch on fire and blow up. Nothing cool happens.

Got the body lift and new suspension installed last weekend. She’s looking good! Right now we’re about 40” from ground to bottom of the fender. The rear end is about an inch and a half taller with Tacoma bilsteins and Tacoma eibach coils (year old w/ arb Bumper and winch) and Toytec superflex coils (2 days old w/o weight)

Replacing the rear suspension is pretty easy as long as you remove the rear tie rods and panhard bar. I’ve only ever dealt with leaf springs. Putting a jack on top of a 2x4 on the top of the axle and raising it up into the bump stop made it easy to lower one side.

Also I tried unbolting the top nut of the shock, no shot. I found a good metal blade for my sawzal and it worked like a charm.
