Mine have been working fine. I use the cross bars for a top box, bike racks, and a Yakima basket and swap out regularly.

Could be a difference in carriage bolts. Sounds like you have something perfectly flush the with cross bar that that is not sitting flat due the the square boss protruding. If I had that problem I'd look at fixing it like this:

1) Use different carriage bolts that have a shallower square section. This might be a PITA. I don't know what standards exist for them (I'm an engine builder, not a chassis guy . . . this is the only time I've really used carriage bolts in an automotive application)

2) Knock the corners off the carriage bolts a bit on the bench grinder. Not all of it, just the part that protrudes.

3) Use a washer with an I.D. large enough to fit over the square section so the square boss no longer sits proud of the cross bar

4) Grind/drill a relief in whatever you're mounting so the square protrusion doesn't not prevent it sitting flat on the bar

p.s. - I realized the thread spec I originally wrote was wrong and corrected a few days ago. TBH, the thread form doesn't matter, just the diameter. (SAE, Metric, USS, Whitworth, Acme, etc . . . it doesn't matter)

Thanks for the suggestions! Carriage bolts would've been perfect, but it was easier to run back to HomeDepot and get 2 new regular bolts. Kind of a pain to get a socket underneath it, but just a little jiggling and it worked.

I agree about the dimensions of the carriage bolts. It was a pain enough to find the ones that I did. I might try a trip to Lowes or Ace to see if they have other ones that might work better. But, for a future project. These are already on there and no need to re-do them.

Those are machinery eye bolts. McMasters has them in 316 stainless - check "Eyebolts - for Lifting". Or check Westechrigging.com for ones made by Crosby - stronger than any load you should put on the rack.

They are prohibitively expensive (!). Over $20 each just for the bolts. Add in washers and nuts etc and you're well over $100 just for a set of 4.

Not sure if the size is a match for the LFD, but Prinsu sells them for $30 a pair.

Does the stainless kit come in black anodized or powder coat? Bought the stainless kit for my wife (loved it) expecting raw stainless, but the kit is black. It does have “5SS” stamped into the steel.

They come Black powder coated. Will match your roof rails and you will have the protection of SS underneath. Good for Montana.

Her SR5 has the silver roof rails. Maybe her Off-road on order will have black rails. Either way, she loved the gift.

Got my crossbars mounted to factory rails and they're great, RTT mounts very securely and everything survived some 4low obnoxious roads.
LFD even got then to me before Christmas somehow and I was able to make our yearly camping trip happen.
Definitely recommend the wind deflector one too.

Yup.
I have 3 ruggedized crossbars but only put 2 on. Even though the Runner is always parked in the garage they have significant rust.

Were those the carbon steel or stainless crossbars?

I ended up getting a Sherpa Crestone roof rack.

Those 4 crossbars are scrap metal now.

Just wanted to give a shout out to LFD's amazing customer service... I ordered some crossbars for my 4R a couple months back, but had to exchange them for another pair. I've been dealing with Jacob over at LFD and he's been nothing short of awesome. Seriously top notch company! :thumb:

I am pretty disappointed. Contacted LFD and they just stated the warranty is 30 days on Powder Coat and offered a discount on buying new ones...

I will go check mine tomorrow. although I just washed/waxed including the roof and I didn't see anything unusual. I do have some chipped off areas from loading my boxes on the roof (and dropping a wrench on them...) but nothing is flaking off or peeling in chunks

what you're experiencing doesn't seem right. I would expect more than 1 year of use out of the powdercoat for the cost of those bars. chipping from loading and putting stuff up there is expected. Even the areas on mine that have chipped are exposed steel and no rust. can you post pictures

Just got my LFD Ruggedized Crossbars in black stainless steel mounted. Overall very impressed. Powdercoating looks good and bars are very beefy with no flex when i push on them. The only thing that moves at all are the factory rails. I have about 1/4" between the integrated fairing and the roof so i did not use the edge trim. I have not driven with them on yet and will update if there are any issues.
Couldn't justify a full rack for just some recovery boards and a case. I don't really overland but do hit some light trails from time to time. So will be nice to get some of the gear out of the back.
