The Limited's Limits

New to the Forum, great place so far.

The engine in my 1995 Toyota T100 SR5 died a few weeks ago just shy of 200,000. Sad Day, it was a great truck. I had my T100 all off road ready and loved to regularly hit the trails. So I'm big into some casual off roading (nothing too extreme).

So anyway, I went in and grabbed myself a long sought after 4Runner.
I searched for a while and finally came up with a 2010 Limited with 13,000 miles on it. Fantastic vehicle I am loving it so far.

But after doing some reading it seems the options as far as making it more off road worthy are a bit limited because of:

1. The suspension
2. The size of the wheels/tires.

So, to any of you limited owners out there, what are we doing to get around this? Anyone done any heavy mods to the limited's yet? I'm not even sure where to start. If I got a lift I would want to change the wheel size to make it look better but I need to brush up on what I could fit.

Trail rims here. Click below for pics as well some mild off road experience with a stock limited. Main question is what you really want to do with the beast.

Just search "Harper7" and you will see just how far you can take your Limited. :)

I don't see any real problem with the X-REAS suspension on the Limited. If you're rock crawling and/or really doing some seriously angled four wheeling then yes the KDSS and the Trail model would be the way to go. I've just spent a couple of days off-road in the Nevada mountains in a SR5 and it handled the single track, steep hills, washes, creeks and rutted roads just fine. I think the Limited suspension has less nose dive and body roll than a stock SR5, it should be an excellent off roader with 17" wheels and the front undercarriage air scoop removed.

Un-related to this thread but what I didn't like was the ipod interface and the USB & power connections in the glove box. Had some trouble with the heater too. But neither one of those items effected off road performance, just this creatures comfort and convenience.

I have done a couple of mods to my limited (check my sig below) and also looking into a solid axle install or long travel shorty.

wow Harper7 has one sick rig! That thing looks awesome. I'm starting to get a few ideas now...I think the first major upgrade I will do is changing the wheels/tires and possibly a lift. I believe I have read on here that with the X-REAS suspension on the limited you can only put a 1-2 inch lift without disconnecting the system. Is disconnecting the X-REAS necessarily a bad thing?

If you're upgrading the shocks, you'll lose X-REAS.

If you're installing spacers, it's possible you may not have to give that up.

That being said, aftermarket shocks do tend to be roughly equivalent in terms of on-road manners to a limited with x-reas, although the x-reas supposedly adapts to different conditions.

KDSS isn't needed for rock crawling, nor does it extend the vehicle's off-road capability any. It's only needed for nicer on-road handling on the drive to the rock crawling location and back.
 
...and know how to disassemble, reassemble, and rewire your new ride with the mighty FSM/EWD :) :cheers:

Anyone have spacers on stock limited 4WD with stock rims? Wondering what average cost for something like that will be.
 
@Keemonrunnin That looks pretty awesome.
I notised a few pictured below yours in the image thread that @Ciaz has (looks like "had," he mentions he sold it) my exact 4Runner. I like what he did to it I might use that as a starting point.

Newb question here but what exactly do the spacers do?
