The Official 3rd Gen Dual Case, Dual Locked Thread

She's in! Need to work on the shifters a bit more but everything works, and I have no leaks anywhere. Rewired the truck to work with the J-shift case, since I did away with the multi-mode case, and even got the lights on the dash to work.

Crawled through my kids school pickup this afternoon. That was awesome.

I know that there are more than 12 of us out there with dual cases. So if you see a 3rd Gen thread with dual cases post up here and we will get the list bigger.

Basically, loads of work to satisfy OCD tendencies.

For lockers, I'm not a fan of carling switches, so I again did the idiotically difficult method and wired everything up all stock like. Spent several hours in the back of the local dealership with wiring books and found all of the pin leads to wire everything up using factory plugs in the dash, so it wasn't a cut and paste job.

I got an automatic switch board from the junk yard, and wired up the ECT switch to the compressor and had a little decal made from the ARB compressor switch.

Used the security LED as an indicator:

On:

Followed someone elses lead on the webs and cut and pasted a modified taco screen print into the dash, but its wired in using the factory plugs on the back of the combo meter, so the bulb is factory and there are no extra solder points on the combo meter itself. Shoulda used a 4runner one, didn't realize it would be a different shade of red. Will have to redo that someday :D

Tried to do a bit of artwork on the switch, but really not happy with it. Someday I'll redo it.

Yes! Very cool man, I haven't seen anyone do this yet. Your OCD set you apart here! Lol. Nothin crazy, but unique! If you post some random electrical "how-to's" on shit like this (electrical), I'm sure it'll stick around for years to come. Love the front locker dash light, you'll trip some people out if they see that in person. From someone who doesn't have a facebook (me, militantly), here is a big "like" for this mod. Thanks!! I'm working on my build thread. It just takes a lot of time to get everything posted up. Hopefully I'll get to the locker wiring soon.

Doesn't Toyota make a factory Front Diff Lock switch already, for an LC?

They make a dial for the electric lockers. It does not fit in a third gen in any of the factory punchouts.

It also doesn't allow for independent locking of the front and rear diffs. You can have just the rear, or both. But not just the front.

Granted, rear or both is good 99% of the time. But I've had a couple of climbs where I could let the rear drag a bit to keep on the line by keeping the front locked and going open in the back (absent a rear driveline disconnect).

Some of the 70 series trucks in the 80s have cable actuated lockers and therefore you can get to Toyota factory diff lock levers if you want to convert to a cable system.

And they do make a factory screenprint for the LC lockers but it doesn't really fit in the 3rd gen cluster. Probably could make it work though. But, it's a picture of a drivetrain with an "x". Not words. So doesn't go with the factory lights in a third gen. May be worth a try though.

Went to do a quick fluid check tonight... both magnets had a nice little pile of metal on them and the oil is full of non magnetic glitter (Aluminum). Crawler has about 900 miles since I put it in. Its been making a little noise but hadn't gotten any louder so I didn't worry about it to much, I can only assume something is rubbing now.

Guess its coming back out next weekend.

On a positive note, I got the shifters tweaked a little more, they're cherry now!

Well, the dual lockers part is done. I've decided on ordering from inchworm for the case this week, but I have another question/mod for us manual wheelers. Are any of you running a hand throttle? I think I'm going to run one once I get the cases back in. Two reasons for this. One, help with engine rev while winching, and two, help control throttle while on obstacles.

I use a idle up switch. Raises idle to about 1300rpm. It helps. Mainly use it for alternator and York compressor tho.

Have you figured out your noise? Mine has had a annoying rattle at high rpm only, about 4500rpm up.

I set up a manual throttle using bike shifter parts. Love it for winching. Use it a little bit while crawling but my gas pedal is pretty forgiving. The one I had on my 71 Blazer I used all the time while crawling with both cases engaged as a blip in the throttle usually broke something.

Nope, still sitting under my work bench. Been out of town and lot and its been 117 out so I really haven't had the time/motivation to mess with it. LOL

Added snow junky to the list. Don't know why I didn't have you on the list. Great vids in your thread.

Hey guys, got a question that hopefully y'all can shed some light on. I've been reading this thread and it made me wonder if it's at all possible for me to somehow take my Center Locker off my 01' SR5 (I'm assuming it's the transfer case?) and combine it with my rear locker on my 99' Limited? The 01' is totaled and I'm building the 99'. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Feel free to private message because I have no idea if I'm gonna see any replies

Let me ask some questions. Are you saying that you want to convert your 99 to be all wheel drive? If so I'm not sure what would be involved beside swapping the transfercases, but I would guess that you would need several wiring harnesses and the shifter and ecm. If you are just asking about the center diff locking portion, your 99 should have a j-shift transfer case which is locked all the time. The AWD is nice but it seems like a lot of work, but if you do a lot of snow wheeling or live where bad weather makes it a substantial advantage then you have everything you need to do it.

Just bringing this back to the top and checking if there are any new dual Case 3rd gens out there that aren't on the list. NWFLBowhunter did you get your cases ordered and maybe in?
