The Official 3rd Gen Dual Case, Dual Locked Thread

Finally done with my setup....

Going to tweak the tranny shifter a wee more.

4.7 front case, IFS, front locker, 5.29s ... and 37s! :wow2:

Honest question: how are you not grenading CVs and front ring gear? Seems like a lot of stress on some known weak links. Curious to hear your feedback.

I'm still looking into it but hope to have my rig dual cased by August. It will also be dual locked by then so it's a win/win. Except for my wallet. That will be a lose/lose. lol

I've put some of my ideas in this thread but I will try to use this one from now on. Starting at post 82 is when I started asking and debating. Which I'm still doing.

I also ran into this little beauty today. I haven't heard anything about it but 4.7's in the rear case sound really good. Plus it's fully built which will save me time.

Verso 2.28x4.70 Dual Transfer Case 23-Spline Input, Top Shift, Tacoma 2.7L Auto/3.4L Manual/Auto - Trail Gear

I called Yotamasters about them and they will call back tomorrow with availability. They said they haven't installed them on any 1st gen Tacos or 3rd gen Runners but have built a few for those years. Someone has to know someone who knows someone that's running one. lol

That is Trail-Gears version of Marlin's lefty and is a great design as you get the strength of two gear driven cases and the ability to run deeper gears in the rear case if you chose to and that is the preferred way to set up. Not only is it best for strength but being able to run in 2wd Low with 2.3 over 4.7 is better in my opinion. I would say that the only issue I could see with this setup is that you are running a greater chance of oil leaks since you have more mating surfaces. But if you're gonna hurt your wallet then really hurt it and get this sweet setup.

dual listed...hehe

owyheerat Awesome! I don't know how I missed you on the list but you're on there now.

Rockdawg, you already had me on the list, # 11.

Now I'm dual cased, dual locked and dual listed :lmao:

Cheers,

Durwin

I have broken lots and lots of axle components in my years of wheeling and I would say it comes down to 80% how I wheel and 20% luck.

I have broken 1 cv and it was a bad luck thing on Hells Revenge. Heading downhill with most of the weight on front passenger-side and I needed to back up and turn hard at the same time because I had picked a really crappy line. cv axles act like a fuse to protect the rest of the drivetrain. I also tend to wheel a lot in 2 wheel low range so I don't bind the front cv's under load and under power while making sharp corners, etc.

I avoid like the plague things that are going to make my front end hop while I need to be on the gas as this is when you generally start grenading things. I go out with a lot of people that don't. In fact 2 weekends ago we had 2 rigs destroy ring gears and carriers from hopping/skinny pedal combos. And they were behind me...

But - with that said - I always carry 2 spare cv axles and a passenger-side non-ADD stubshaft setup

Things are in the works. Called ECGS supply today and got the lockers ready to order. I talked to them about a dual case set-up and they don't really sell many pre-builts but said they'd be happy to look at any part numbers from TG that I give them. They said they would also inspect the box before it comes to me. It will be Trail Gear built not ECGS built though. I might end up just doing the case myself.

As far as the lockers go I have one question for you guys. ECGS listed a non-ABS diff. I do have ABS and am not entirely sure that's the correct housing. I'm a lot jet lagged since getting back from Australia and my google skills are shit right now. So what diff to order? lol

EDIT: Never mind. My google search never included going to ECGS site. Of course it's a non-abs diff. I'm tired. lol

LOL well you will occupy a very rare spot of dual locked, dual cased and dual listed until theesotericone knocks you off that second listing. :yo:

I agree about the driving style being important! I do believe that the dual cases and dual locked really reduces the shock loads that happen when wheeling. and yes always keep extra cv's in the truck. LOL

Sweet!!!!!! your gonna love being part of this group!

Just bringing this back to the top and checking if there are any new dual Case 3rd gens out there that aren't on the list. NWFLBowhunter did you get your cases ordered and maybe in?

Had a minor setback last labor day when I rolled the runner. Finally got it all fixed up and ordered the case from Marlin the first week of March, should be getting close to being shipped.

Yes, yes I will.

Got some more calls taken care of.

Trail Gear is at least 3 months out on the verso. I also verified that it is not clockable. That may be an issue. I'd hate to drop the coin to find out it sits to low. I could only find a few pics of it installed online and they where on a 2nd gen Taco. It might just be my eyeball but it looks lower then the frame rails by a good amount.

I also called Tom Woods and having them do the shafts won't be a problem. 2 day lead time currently. That's nice. Total for both shafts will be 800 give or take.

Eventually I'll make up my mind about what route to go for the crawl box. If there's anything I'm not thinking of as far as current options to dual case for a 3rd gen please let me know.

And the research continues. lol

Just get the Atlas 4, clock it flat and move your gas tank so you can flat belly your rig, get some race seats to clear the clocked case, enjoy for years to come. All you need is time and money... [emoji6]

Got my crawl box and assorted hardware today. It's all put together and ready to bolt up.

I decided to go old school and twin stick the stock case and single stick the crawl box. I'm waiting on Rad to ship the twins for the rear chain drive case. They make them but don't list them on the site FYI.

I'm still in the process of trying to source a stock chain drive case and F/R drive shafts. If any of you guys have those laying around please let me know.

Speaking of drive shafts, since the box is built with both adapter plates bolted up I was able to get a real length of that. It's 8.5". Exactly like everyone else who's used the TG adapter kit. I was going to wait till install to get the true flange to flange numbers. Now I'm thinking I'll just get my current numbers and add 8.5 to the front and subtract 8.5 from the rear.

I understand that the drive line angle will change but I can't see the slip yokes not being able to make up for that.

Thoughts?

I think you'll be fine adding/subtracting 8.5 inches from your current lengths.
I've used the same method before with perfect results, just not on a 3rd gen.

First off, glad to hear you are making progress. As others have stated, you are gonna love this mod!

I installed an Inchworm gear crawl box (from Low Range Offroad) and I believe they use the same adapter, and my measurement was exactly 8 1/2". I think you will be fine using that dimension to have shafts modified. My local shop only took 24 hours.

Regarding rear pinion angle, I installed a pair of Cali Fab premium adjustable rear links. They are very well built and did the job of correcting the angle.
3rd Gen 4Runner Parts ? CALIFAB

Good luck and keep us posted.

Ok a couple questions to revive this

I have a 96 limited auto tranny, with the silly 4wd button on the tcase knob.

I’d like to drop a 4.7 case in between the transmission and factory tcase, or buy a J case to go in the back.

Now for length, will the auto with duals fit without messing with the fuel tank? I don’t mind cutting metal and mucking with the crossmember but I don’t want to play with the gas tank really.

First, the Auto Trans will not be a problem as many have done it and while tight it is doable. I believe that you have to switch to a J-shift rear transfer case. I know that Rock Solid Toys has gotten the wiring figured out on doing this. Perhaps someone here can speak to that issue. Dual Cases is a great mod, you will love it.

Why switch to the J? Length issue?

I had duals in my Tacoma and LOVED it. I want those low gears again
https://youtu.be/jRZZN5V2je0

Crawl ratio was 209:1 in this though. With a 4.7 in front of my chain 2.28 case I’m looking st only 129ish. Still plenty low though. 209 was almost too slow...almost...
