The one thing...

LINY4Runner

Almost everyone has a roof basket. Most people in here have OME springs, and a good handful have Land Cruiser coils. There's a decent amount of people who have installed an ARB/TJM (or similar) bumper on their rig. There's a few people with Sequioa wheels.
But the one thing on my truck that set it apart. The only custom, one-off piece that I have on my truck...the one thing that makes MY truck unique is on it's way to becoming the next generic "me too" mod.

I would never have the audacity to copy someones work down to the very detail. What happened to being original? What happened to, "I want to do something to my car to make it different from any other car on the road"? And he asked me all kinds of questions on the process I used and the paint I used. That would be like me asking Pikeman to measure out all the dimensions of his bumper, and then making a clone of it. Uncool.
They say "imitation is the greatest form of flattery", but this was my one mod that I was most proud of, and I liked having just for me.

Son of a *****! He even +1 you and painted the Toyota emblem red! The wheels do look good with the red bead though, a nice change from the all black wheels I see everywhere

I'm sorry that a mod you felt so passionately about got copied! But you did post pictures on a public (world wide) forum. And many (my self included) use this forum to get great ideas for mods for our 4runners. I guess the only way to keep a mod your own is to not post pics.

I agree, we all use this forum to share ideas, advice, and creative mods we have done. And to also get ideas for mods that someone else figured out. :) I mean what if the guy who first did the deckplate mod threw a fit because now everyone did it...

Thats basically what a lot of threads on here are about, its a "look what I did to my 4runner, and heres how I did it, just put XYZ here and then do 123 and there you have it..."

For me, I get a lot of pride when I share something useful, or creative on here and I get people interested in it. I think you should feel flattered.

i agree this is a great place to find ideas for mods. but it's a little annoying to have your design copied.
i wouldn't be half as annoyed if he used the black and red combo on a different set of wheels.
it's the fact that they're identical to mine that annyos me. his take away from the uniqueness of mine(which is why i painted them this way to begin with).

there's hundreds of sets of wheels and hundreds of different color combinations anyone can use, why bite off mine?

Honestly, I don't expect many of you to understand, because there's very few people who do have something custom or one-off on their truck. But those of you who do, those of you who spend hours to create something that was truly unique, something truly yours, that nobody else has would feel the same way if someone ripped off your design to the T.

I understand how u feel but just think at least its going on a black 4runner instead of the same color runner as urs! :)

u know what this means now? you gotta do something out of the ordinary to change all this..yes, that means, u gotta put 28'' spinners to stand out from the rest of us. o and you have to paint them bright pink. and when do finish the project, tell nobody, show nobody.... and hopefully no one will copy you. im terribly sorry if you feel like this, but if i were you, id man up about the whole situation.

have a good day

C'mon man, let it go. Who knows someone in your state or city who saw you driving --is already copying your idea again.

I understand at some point how you feel but c'mon I am pretty sure you saw that design on some one elses rig.... maybe not the same brand of wheels but the same style...and at the end is the same thing.

I love how this ones below looks.... a little different than yours..and tought about doing the same but instead of red Gold or Bronze...the Idea is still in my head but not sure. And there are tons of people with that same idea of rims out there. It is really hard to have a unique set of rims somehow down the road , sooner or later u will find someone with the same thing

that pathfinder is sick! however those rims are too big for my taste. and that red trim needs to be a closer match to the car's paint

Yeah your point was definitely lost here LINY. I posted in the other guy's thread that mentioning the inspiration would have been nice. The Sequoia wheels are crazy popular on the Runners here and the black with red bead is a popular look on a lot of wheel styles, so it was only a matter of time before you saw your exact wheel posted up. I'm just wondering if giving you a heads up, or some credit for the mod, would have made it cool with you though.

Thats a bummer, You know that if you thought of the idea, eventually, someone else is going to either copy you or think of it without your help anyways... who knows someone may have thought of doing that exact same idea before you but hadnt gotten around to it yet...

I know I have meant to refinish my old rims to sell them, they are sitting in my friends garage but I haven't touched them in about 6 mo.

I would look at it like this LINY, look at your truck as a complete work and know that no one else has the combo of mods that yours has! I know for a fact that even though I have the same lift/same roofrack/same wheels/tires/deck/amp/color leds/ipod dock etc.

no one has the same combo and therefore mine will look different.

The only way I could say that no one is gonna copy you exactly on something is if you fab something up... I plan on buying steel and making my own sliders and bumpers... you can still do that! buy some steel, fab up a rear bumper with a tire carrier!

oh, and you have the TJM for the front and I can almost guarantee you NO ONE ELSE has a 2ND GEN TJM on a 3RD GEN 4RUNNER!!

Honestly, i would be flattered LINY, you along with MillerPKA, Flexinc, Sn0wrunner have the most bad@$s 4runners in the country!

I have seen some nice ones in person that I aren't on T4R, but they still dont have the uniqueness and originality that make up your Rig as a whole, So dont get down about people copying you!

yeah I mean it would have softened the blow a little...whatever I'll get over it. He's got a long way to go to catch up to how badass my truck is.

Thanks Shon, for your words of encouragement with a hint of tough-love haha

I'll get over it. Maybe I'll get some bronze TE-37s like that ONE guy who has them ;) or TRD FJ wheels! (I'm joking Miller, I wouldn't)

wow you're completely missing the point.

picture 6 months ago when MillerPKA still had his lower rockers painted tan...now imagine someone else with a black runner also painting their lower rockers tan.

I bought my 4Runner before joining here. I got it because I'm a Toyota Tech and because I couldn't get a loan on a Double Cab Taco. Not because of you or anyone else who bought it before I bought mine.

A buddy of mine bought a shirt at the Levi's store and I liked it so I went and bought one. He didn't like it at first...kinda like the same thing you're going through. I told him how often are we gonna be the same place at the same time? Now he's fine with it...

Now, if we all meet up this summer at the East Coast meet there might be a chance to see both of your runners at the same place at the same time but other than that it's not that likely right? Even then, they're not identical...just similar wheels...really similar wheels.

I guess bottom line is, don't stress. After all, as it sits I'm like blacked out wheel owner number 7,915,032 and I'm ok with it...:peace:

really? lol.

over a year later and u get bent? for real???So Gay

Black wheels with the red lip was a trend in the '90s on import cars and it's not like that color combo is such a stretch that somebody wouldn't have thought of it on their own.

This is silly to continue talking about it since now it's bringing more attention to your mod and probably will be copied even more and maybe by me.

I like your wheels and your's will always be the first 4runner I think of when I see this mod on any other truck.:artist2:
